Steampunk Weekly - 03.15.10

Les Aventures Extraordinaires d'Adèle Blanc-Sec
directed by Luc Besson
coming April 2010
a bit of steampunk from France

Well, this movie clip hints at steampunk. Hey, there's a dragon-looking creature. Is he flesh or cyber? Anyhooooo, the word is out that this is a steampunk movie.

The movie will be released across the seas in April. I'm hoping it will reach the U.S. shores too. Otherwise, we will have to wait for the DVD in a year or so. boo-hoo.

Would love a translation of what the man is saying at the end of the clip. Please ;-D

I haven't heard of this story before so I went to the wikipedia. Amazing female character here folks!

Per wikipedia:
Les Aventures extraordinaires d'Adèle Blanc-Sec (The Extraordinary Adventures of Adele Dry-White) is a Franco-Belgian comics adventure series written and illustrated by French comics artist Jacques Tardi.

The adventures, set in Paris in the years before and after World War I, revolve around the protagonist Adèle Blanc-Sec. A cynical heroine, she is initially a novelist of popular fiction, who turns to investigative journalism as her research and subsequent adventures reveal further details of the mystical world of crime.

Themes of the occult, corruption, official incompetence, and the dangers of patriotism suffuse the series. One interesting feature is the hiatus which separates Adèle's first exploits, taking place in 1910s Paris, from later ones, instead set in the post-WWI milieu.

The separation is explained with her having been cryogenically hibernated following a grave injury. The expedient was deemed necessary by Tardi to avoid her entanglement in the First World War. In an interview he declared: "Her feisty nature made it impossible to provide her with a place in the war. She would not have been allowed to fight, and could no more have settled for being a nurse, than she could have remained home rolling bandages".

I'm a-thinking. Thinking of doing a steamPink weekend, June 4-6. Let me know if you want to help me out with it... guest posts, giveaway offers, you-tell-me, etc.

steamPink = female heroine stories with romance, adventure or mystery in a steampunk world (sample books here)
