Zombification:  meteor from outer space

Description from book:
"Over the last several years, the Norwegian cartoonist Jason has proven himself to be a singular talent in international comics, a deadpan minimalist with a line reminiscent of Herge's." --Bookforum

...and Jason emphatically puts the "dead" back into "deadpan" with The Living and the Dead, in which a meteor from outer space causes the deceased to claw their way out of their graves to feast on the living -- wreaking havoc with both civilization and our protagonist's romantic inclinations.

Horror, humor, and romance commingle in this near-silent graphic novelette (seven lines of dialogue total!), which feature as much blood and gore as you could possibly want from a zombie comic, but also a sweet love story and many laughs so dark they edge into the infrared. Bon appetit!

My thoughts:
In-a-word: inevitable

Not much dialogue in this but that's okay. The story works well with the wonderful graphics. The battle of zombies vs. humans plays out. The people are portrayed as dogs and ducks. So, it's not too scary to look at. And, a sweet romance does take place amongst the chaos.

I Was a Teenage Zombie (1987)

Director: John Elias Michalakis
Written by: James Aviles Martin
Steve McKoy
George Seminara

Genre: Comedy, Horror, Zombies
Rating: 3

Tagline: I was young, reckless, and in love. Then... I was DEAD, young, reckless, and in love.
-check out daily events for this week

Six high school buddies accidentally kill a drug pusher and dump his body in toxic waters. When the pusher returns as a zombie and goes on a killing spree, their only recourse is to dump the body of one of their own recently dead, and have him return as a "good" zombie to face off with the "bad" one.

Zombie speed: A bit superhuman.

Zombification: Toxic waste in water from a nuclear power plant. However, only two zombies are in the movie. No one gets zombified by bites.

Zombie mode:  one is somewhat feral and the other is high functioning

My thoughts:
In-a-word: green

Hoke-y and camp-y with an off into the sunset ending.

While the concept of a good guy zombie was cool, I did not like the bad guy zombie. He was such a wacky vengeful one.

Ewww moment: teen girl attacked on car - ick - this scene alone, turns me off - ick.

The phenomenon that's been sweeping the country seems to be here to stay. Not only are the teenagers who have come back from their graves still here, but newlydeads are being unearthed all the time.  While scientists look for answers and politicians take their stands, the undead population of Oakville have banded together in a group they're calling the Sons of Romero, hoping to find solidarity in segregation.

Phoebe Kendall may be alive, but she feels just as lost and alone as her dead friends.  Just when she reconciled herself to having feelings for a zombie -- her Homecoming date Tommy Williams -- her friend Adam is murdered taking a bullet that was meant for her.  Things get even more confusing when Adam comes back from the grave.  Now she has romantic interest in two dead boys; one who saved her life, and one she can't seem to live without.

Zombification:
The newest Frankenstein Formula theory was that a certain mixture of teenge hormones and fast food preservatives set up the proper conditions of living impairment.

Teens from Oklahoma, Rockaway Beach, The Big Apple, Arkansas, or The Big Easy all bore at least a chance of winding up living impaired, as long as they croaked during the delicate teen years. (Generation Dead, page 7)

Zombie mode:  high-functioning with some low-functioning

My thoughts:
In-a-word(s): love

This books continues the storyline from book one. It gets into what it would take for an activist to create change. Change in thinking and in living with an unusual population.

The story is also a coming of age story for the teens both living and undead. The awkwardness and struggles of teen experiences play out with their growth experience.

Love plays a major role in the story - as we all know it is a humanizing factor when it comes to worlds with zombies, vampires, werewolves, etc.

I may add to this review later on this week. This is one of those stories that sits with you for a bit before the full effect hits. Lots to think about.

E. Van Lowe's Fun Facts

5 Fun Facts

1) When I wrote NSDWAZ I was in the early stages of writing something else—a story about a girl whose family was on the witness protection program. But this silly zombie story kept popping into my head. I never went back to that other book.

2) Margot’s manifesto is the result of something that happened to me. When I graduated from junior high school, I was very unhappy with my social standing. I promised myself that in high school I was going to be a totally different person. This is exactly how Margot felt. Unlike Margot, I was too chicken to write a manifesto.

3) Principal Taft’s daily sayings “Marvelous Monday” “Terrific Tuesday” are based on a guy I worked with several years ago. He was a bit older, and every morning he came into the office full of energy, and saying things like “What a wonderful Wednesday it is.” I thought the sayings were corny, but somehow cool. When I was looking for something to make Principal Taft sound unique, I thought of my old friend.

4) I am afraid of bridges. I know this has nothing to do with NSDWAZ, but this is something I never talk about, and so now you know something very personal about me. Every time I cross a bridge I get the feeling it’s going to fall down. It’s worse when I am driving. When I am in a car with others I pretend everything is okay, but on the inside I am screaming “The bridge is falling down! The bridge is falling down!”

5) Originally I called the book Getting By At Zombie High. I knew there was a better title. I worked on the title for quite a while, and after many, many months I came up with NSDWAZ. I’m glad I put the work in. I love the title—don’t you?

Dawn of the Dead (2004) movie

Dawn of the Dead (2004)

Director: Zack Snyder

Writers: James Gunn
based on: George A. Romero

Genre: Horror, Zombies
Rating: 4

Inspiration: September Zombies week - check out the daily events this week

Description from imdb:
Due to unknown reasons the dead are returning to walk the earth and will attack anyone who gets in their way. A small group of survivors band together and decided to hide out in a large mall. The survivors manage to sustain control in the mall, but when supplies start to run low, another plan needs to emerge.

Tagline: When there's no more room in hell, the dead will walk the earth.

Amusing quote:

Confused Reporter: I understand you're having a difficult time killing these things, Sheriff.

County Sheriff: Just shoot them in the head! They seem to go down permanently if you shoot them in the head.

Trivia:
Director Cameo: [Zack Snyder] a member of a commando unit (with shades holding an assault weapon) in front of the Capitol Building in Washington, DC. This scene can be seen during the opening credits montage of video/news clips of zombie attacks.

- it is such a treat when directors make cameo appearances

By the end of production, 3000 zombie make-up effects had been created.

- who would have thought there were so many ways to create the zombie look

Odd moment:
When arming yourself against zombies, what would you choose if given a choice between a heavy metal crowbar or a wooden croquet mallet?

Anyhoo, I found it odd that the croquet mallet was selected. And, you can guess what happened to it in a matter of seconds.

Zombie speed:
Zack Snyder said that the reason his zombies run at full speed is because he wanted to avoid the inherent comic impression given by slow, shuffling undead.

Zombification: Unknown

Zombie mode:  feral

My thoughts:
In-a-word: hungry

I liked this rendition of survivors of a zombie infestation. The modernized version was done well. The music, imagery and slow-mo parts of the movie created a perfect zombie ambiance.

Each character represented the various human survivor traits. Made me wonder where I would fit it in. Or maybe not, maybe I'd be zombified??? argh!

Excuse me, I'm going to go read a zombie survival guide now.

Maybe even try to score a zombie survival kit.

Beware: Although the mall is a pretty ideal place to be during a zombie attack, you're stuck when the power goes out.

Ewww moment: the smallest zombie - you'll know what I mean when you watch this

Description from amazon.com:
Phoebe Kendall is just your typical Goth girl with a crush. He's strong and silent...and dead.

All over the country, a strange phenomenon is occurring. Some teenagers who die aren't staying dead. But when they come back to life, they are no longer the same. Feared and misunderstood, they are doing their best to blend into a society that doesn't want them.

The administration at Oakvale High attempts to be more welcoming of the "differently biotic." But the students don't want to take classes or eat in the cafeteria next to someone who isn't breathing. And there are no laws that exist to protect the "living impaired" from the people who want them to disappear--for good.

When Phoebe falls for Tommy Williams, the leader of the dead kids, no one can believe it; not her best friend, Margi, and especially not her neighbor, Adam, the star of the football team. Adam has feelings for Phoebe that run much deeper than just friendship; he would do anything for her. But what if protecting Tommy is the one thing that would make her happy?

Zombification:
The newest Frankenstein Formula theory was that a certain mixture of teenge hormones and fast food preservatives set up the proper conditions of living impairment.

Teens from Oklahoma, Rockaway Beach, The Big Apple, Arkansas, or The Big Easy all bore at least a chance of winding up living impaired, as long as they croaked during the delicate teen years. (Generation Dead, page 7)

Zombie mode:  high-functioning with some low-functioning

My thoughts:
In-a-word(s): differently biotic

This is a more serious rather than campy or gory zombie book. Teen zombies begin to deal with issues regarding fair treatment and rights. They are a subculture that experience a kind of racism of their own. So sad to read about hate crimes and family displacement among these young zombies.

In reading about these zombie troubles, I am reminded of the African-American Civil Rights Movement and how that period of time in the U.S. played out. This world must undergo similar changes in order to co-exist with zombies.

Definitely, a thought-provoking book.

Excerpt:

ABOUT ME

My name is Tommy Williams. I'm a junior at Oakvale High in Oakvale, Connecticut. I'm new to the area. I moved here with my Mom because she likes the school. We've got a cat named Gamera that hates me. We live in a trailer park near Lake Oxoboxo. Mom says it's temporary but I kind of like it.

My main hobby right now is writing, but I played football and baseball at my last school.

Oh yeah--I'm also a zombie.

E. Van Lowe's Zombie Movie Pick

Welcome to day two of Zombie Week.

Today I am going to review a movie.  Yes, Nancy, it’s a zombie flick.  Let me begin by saying I love zombie flicks.  Love, love, love them!  The remake of Night of The Living Dead and Twenty-Eight Days Later are among my all time favorites.

Being a comedy writer, I also enjoy funny movies, so for me, a funny zombie movie is nirvana.  Movies like Fido and Shaun of The Dead—one of the funniest zombie movies ever made—are also on my list of favorites. Today I am going talk about a camp zombie flick.  Wikipedia defines camp as an aesthetic sensibility wherein something is appealing because of its bad taste and ironic value.   Bad taste and irony.  Yay!  To me there is nothing funnier than a campy movie, which brings me to Flight of The Living Dead: Outbreak On A Plane.  The name says it all, doesn't it?  This D-horror flick could have easily been called Zombies On A Plane, because that’s what it is.

Okay, here we go.  Mad scientist Leo Bennett, has discovered a way to alter humans so that when they die they come back to life--and he thought this was a good idea.  One of the other scientists’ wives is accidentally exposed to mad scientist Leo’s virus, so they put her in suspended animation until they can find a cure.  And then what do they do?  Why they take her on a 747 full of innocent people, of course.  Fortunately the people on the plane are not very likable, so we can't wait for them to die.  And die they do.

Characters include: the aging flight captain who is on his last flight (And the minute he tells us this we know he’s dead);  two young couples we can't stand (We also can’t wait for them to become members of the living dead).  There’s even a plain clothes police officer with his sarcastic prisoner handcuffed to his wrist, and a few scantily clad flight attendants.  These characters may be cliched, but who cares.  They’re all going to die.

Some of the dialogue in this movie is so bad it’s hysterically funny.  But the zombies are really SCARY, and there’s lots of action.  If you can put up with the dialogue and plot line, you are in for one heck of a thrill ride.  Once the action gets going it is pretty much non stop.  I'm not going to spill too much of the storyline because I don’t want to spoil the fun.

My only warning is for those of you who like their movies to have something meaningful going on.   This movie is not very deep.  It isn’t going to win any awards, but I enjoyed it anyway.  It's perfect for those days when you want to watch something that doesn't require a lot of thought. So, if you’re into campy movies, and love zombies and action, this movie is for you.  I rate it four brains.

Dance of the Dead (2008) movie

Dance of the Dead (2008)

Director: Gregg Bishop
Written by: Joe Ballarini

Genre: Comedy, Horror, Zombies
Rating: 4

Inspiration: September Zombies week - check out this week's events

It is prom night in middle America. Tuxes have been rented and dresses have been bought. But when the dead unexpectedly rise from their graves to eat the living, it's up to the geeks, the nerds, the outcast and the losers who couldn't get dates to the dance to save the town from the undead. Unlikely heroes will rise to the challenge as they are forced to put aside their differences and band together to fight for their lives. Armed with bats, sledgehammers, garden tools and guitars, this rag-tag group of high-school teens are in for a prom night they will never forget.

Amusing quote:

Coach Keel: Little lady, you'll get the machete.

Gwen: But I don't know how to shoot a machete.

Zombie speed:

The speed of a zombie in this movie is determined by the amount of time he or she has been deceased. The zombies that were buried recently can launch out of graves and run like cheetahs. The ones that were buried long ago define your stereotypical zombie that drags his heels as the heroes get away.

Zombification: Unknown
Apparently it is something that happens often because there is a scene where the caretaker of a cemetary knows how to deal with zombies poking out of their graves. However, when too many of them are unearthed they are a bit much for him to handle.

Zombie mode: feral - pretty fast, so run

My thoughts
:
In-a-word: teamwork

I have chosen mostly teen zombie movies to review for September Zombies week. This genre is usually somewhat camp-y with comedy which is just my speed -- usually not too scary.

This first one for review is a current one that includes a classic car make-out scene interrupted by zombies. Now, why would anyone want to make out in a cemetary is beyong me.

I liked the fact that the girls in this movie were just as tough as the boys in slaying the zombies.

Zombie distraction: Something new that I haven't seen used in any of the zombie movies is music. There is a great scene where a high school rock band manages to save themselves from a zombie attack by turning up their amps and rock out. As they say music soothes the savage beasts.

Ewww moment: kissing scene with some unusual tongue action

Un-zombie moment: A beheaded zombie carries his head to the prom. This does not jive with me because beheading a zombie is supposed to be one of the main ways to "kill" a zombie.

Description from the amazon.com:
Romy and Michelle's Hight School Reunion meets Night of the Living Dead in this laugh-out-loud debut YA novel by Emmy Award-nominated TV writer E. Van Lowe
Principal Taft's 3 Simple Rules for Surviving a Zombie Uprising:

Rule #1: While in the halls, walk slowly and wear a vacant expression on your face. Zombies won't attack other zombies.

Rule #2: Never travel alone. Move in packs. Follow the crowd. Zombies detest blatant displays of individuality.

Rule #3: If a zombie should attack, do not run. Instead, throw raw steak at to him. Zombies love raw meat. This display of kindness will go a long way.

On the night of her middle school graduation, Margot Jean Johnson wrote a high school manifesto detailing her goals for what she was sure would be a most excellent high school career. She and her best friend, Sybil, would be popular and, most important, have boyfriends. Three years later, they haven't accomplished a thing!
Then Margot and Sybil arrive at school one day to find that most of the student body has been turned into flesh-eating zombies. When kooky Principal Taft asks the girls to coexist with the zombies until the end of the semester, they realize that this is the perfect opportunity to live out their high school dreams. All they have to do is stay alive....

Zombification: secret potion

Zombie mode: not your ripping flesh gory type, most can be subdued with bits of fresh meat

My thoughts:
In-a-word: do the right thing

This book tickled me! It is light zombie fun read with lots of LOL moments. The 80's references and dialogue are what got me. Things get wacky and the main character, Margot, finally comes to realize that there's more to life than what is on her manifesto. In the end, the messages of the book are clear regarding schools, popularity and friendship.

Now, I need to go listen to some Tom Jones

Fun stuff:

Margot's Journal excerpt:
Sunday, April 26, 2009I WANT CANDY Yesterday I found a bag of candy corn left over from Easter. I wound up eating the whole thing. I LOVE candy. So sue me.

Zombie Hip Hop

I'm a day early...

I feel like dancing because September Zombies week starts tomorrow!

Consider this a teaser.

While watching one of my favorite TV shows, So You Think You Can Dance, Season 5, I was thrilled to see a zombie-related hip hop dance number. On July 22, 2009 Kayla Radomski and Jason Glover performed the Hip Hop dance which was choreographed by Shane Sparks. The song used was They're Everywhere by Izza Kizza.

I found a video on rickey.org. If you haven't already, check out Rickey's site. I love to read his take on So You Think You Can Dance, American Idol, Project Runway, Make Me A Supermodel and most especially Lost.
