SteamPink: epilogue

~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~
by Robert C. Roman
~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~

Micah frowned. He was on a working vacation, and so far it wasn't a good one.

He walked along the close cropped lawn, his eyes scanning the crowd. Micah knew ought to be looking for the displays set up by the firms selling security devices, but he couldn't bring himself to take his gaze from the milling throng. He'd spent too long guarding the artwork under his protection. Habits long practiced kept him looking at hands, waists, shoulders, and thighs, checking to see who carried concealed weapons. More than a few did, and he noted which individuals were armed with what.

Shaking his head, Micah forced his eyes closed, forced himself to take a deep breath. He wasn't responsible for security here at the Panama Pacific Exposition. He was on vacation, for the first time in… for the first time ever, actually. All because of Ophilia.

Thoughts of her brought a smile to his face. As if thinking of Ophilia had summoned her up, the scent of her perfume wafted through the air. A moment later, graceful fingers slid around his face from behind, and he felt her press against him, pulling her lips up to his ear.

"Guess who?"

"If you're not Ophilia Morgan, I suspect one of us is in big trouble."

She laughed; a clear bell-like sound that turned heads through the crowd. Many of the looks were disapproving, though it was unclear which impropriety they disapproved of. It could be Ophilia's outlandish costume; a relatively sedate Sears Catalog dress, but one which had been cut away to show Ophilia's more sedate tattoos. It could be the tattoos themselves, art worked into her skin, pierced at the corners by gleaming silvered steel. It might be her behavior, as she spun around Micah, her hands fluttering about his face. Eventually she stopped in front of him, pulled him down for a quick kiss, and stepped back, one hand waving with a flourish to a young man in a lab coat.

She didn't care one whit for the disapproval of the crowd, and as long as Ophilia was happy, the crowd could go hang. Micah adjusted his tie, smoothed his suit jacket, and extended a hand to the nervous looking young man.

" Who is this you've brought along, Ophilia?"

The young man had a firm grip, but his hands were graceful, a pianist's hands. "Good Afternoon, sir. My name is Abraham Franklin. I’m a scientist. An inventor, of sorts."

"Good to meet you, Mr. Franklin. I am Micah Slate, Director of Security at the Leo de Milan museum in Philadelphia."

Ophilia's smile sparkled white in the summer sun, "He knows! He's actually in from Philadelphia, Micah. I knew you were concerned about the new equipment. Shipping, and installation, and maintenance and whatnot, so when I saw that Abraham was out of Philadelphia, I knew he was the one for us."

Micah relaxed, the stressors of the day melting away. Assuming young Mr. Franklin had viable designs for his devices, Micah's work in San Francisco was, essentially, done. He turned to see Ophilia's wicked grin directed at him, and couldn't help teasing her.

"It has been excellent meeting you, Mr. Franklin. I should like to see your designs. In the meantime, however, take my card. Please contact me when you return to Philadelphia." He turned to Ophilia, hiding his smile. "Well, since we're all done, I suppose we'll be catching a train back home then?"

Her frown was as pretty as her smile. "If you think we're cutting our vacation short after I've gone and done your work for you, you've got another think coming, Mister Slate."

Micah smiled. It was going to be a lovely vacation.

Lady Doctor Wyre
by Joely Sue Burkhart

Description from the amazon:
A dangerous technology could conquer the universe. Love could set it free.

Jane Austen Space Opera, Book 1

Charlotte, Duchess of Wyre, once held the Queen’s highest confidence—and the technological secret that keeps the royal heart beating. Fearful of what atrocities that Britannia might commit with her research, Charlotte turned to the galaxy’s most infamous assassin, Lord Sigmund Regret, to stage her own death.

Even without the simplest of luxuries, seven years hiding in the Americus colony is preferable to one day in the Tower of Londinium. Until a bounty hunter’s bullet forces her to revive her research. Now the same nanobots that keep the Queen alive also run rampant in Lord Regret’s body. Making his yearly Solstice visits increasingly…intimate…and complicating her courtship with the safe and honorable Sheriff Gilead Masters.

When the Americus colony declares independence, and her humble sheriff makes a shocking confession, Charlotte has had enough. Weary of running, tired of living without tea and silks, she fires a warning shot across Britannia’s bow: cease hunting Lady Wyre, or lose the technological power the crown holds so dear.

Her next task isn’t so simple. Somehow she must keep the two men she loves alive—and prevent them from killing each other.

Warning: Ladies in positions of power, stylish spaceships, BDSM. A ménage a trois featuring a duchess on the run, a gentlemanly assassin, and a rough-and-tumble sheriff willing to gun down anyone who gets between him and his lady.

ebook
Rating: 5

Description from the amazon:
Tilda Upton's talent at finding things with the aid of a talisman puts her on the edge of the dangerous hellhag category. Rather inexperienced in using her magic, she's prone to mistakes. It is one such mistake that lands her in debt to the Chief Royal Inventor who blackmails her into retrieving an Oriental and his machine. But to find the Oriental she needs to intercept an airship and the best way to do that is through piracy.

Tilda turns to the notorious Black Jack Knight, a sky pirate known for his cruelty and cleverness who dislikes passengers, particularly of the female variety. Fortunately for Tilda he accepts a currency she can provide—the location of a man who witnessed his brother's murder, a murder which Jack was falsely accused of committing. Together they fight corsairs, a mad inventor and their growing attraction to each other in order to retrieve the man Tilda has been forced to find, only to learn his machine could destroy her and everyone like her.

Exhibit Hall: Tick T.O.C.K.

Come hither...

There is more to see in the Mechanical Arts Building...

~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~
by Tonia Brown
~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~

Rebecca stared at the exhibit as she sucked on the straw of her drink. All around her the hall throbbed with noises; the crowd oohing and ahhing at every little thing, the machines clanking and whistling, the calliope of music flushing across the bandstand. She strained, really, really, really hard, but still couldn’t make heads or tails of was under the glass display case. Her father said it was a Transcendent Omnipresent Chronometer Key, whatever that was supposed to be. The plaque said it had something to do with a clock or time or something, but most of the words were far too big for her seven year old brain to process. The display was circa 1870, which her dad said just meant it was made a really long time ago. Forty five years! That was ancient!

The thing was no bigger than her hand, and round, and made of metal, and looked very, very old. It had tons of buttons and switches, but nothing that told her what it did. There were some pictures in the display case too, but most of them were of an old steam train, just like the kind her grandfather used to drive. Before he left her alone so he could go to the toilet, she heard her daddy say the train was smart. Which didn’t surprise her at all. Of course it was smart. Otherwise pictures of it wouldn’t be on display in the exhibit hall at the World’s Fair.

She squinted at the old photographs, hoping to find some kind of clue to the thing in the case amongst the faded, black and white images. Most of them were of the smart train, but one had some people in it.

There was an older man, short and fat and funny looking. He wore glasses and a coat like her daddy wore when he was seeing his patients. He smiled wide, like he wanted the whole world to smile with him. Rebecca liked that. It made her want to smile too.

He had one arm around a very pretty lady, the kind of pretty Rebecca hoped to grow up and be just like one day. The smiling woman wore pants, which Rebecca thought was awful brave, and looked all kinds of in charge. Yeah, that was the kind of woman Rebecca wanted to be when she was old.

On the other side of the fat man slouched a really tall, really thin, really scary looking man. He smiled too, but his grin was weird, like he couldn’t help but smile. Like he couldn’t stop smiling. Rebecca didn’t like that.

Off a few steps, on the other side of the pretty lady there stood another man. He sure was handsome—what her aunt called a dangerous kind of gorgeous—but he also looked sad. He stood away from the others, like he was supposed to be there but at the same time didn’t belong. He wasn’t looking at the camera like the others were neither. He was looking at the lady, like he got caught sneaking a peek at her just when the picture was taken.

And he wasn’t smiling.

The photograph was nice, but it didn’t tell her what the round metal thing was on display. No one seemed to know, either. She had asked at least twenty different people what it was, including the man who was supposed to be in charge of the showing, but all they said was it was something that crazy professor invented. But Rebecca had a feeling there was something special about it. She just wished she knew what.

“You here alone honey?” a woman asked.

Rebecca turned around and nearly dropped her drink. Crouching to Rebecca’s level was the pretty woman from the photograph. But it couldn’t have been her because the photograph was ancient. And the pretty lady was anything but ancient.

“Are you here alone?” she repeated.

Rebecca shook her head, unable to speak.

“You here with your mother?” the woman asked.

Rebecca shook her head again. She didn’t have a mother, but the pretty woman couldn’t have known that.

“Your father?” the woman asked.

Rebecca nodded.

“And he just left you here?” the woman asked. “Alone?”

Rebecca nodded again.

“Foolish men,” the woman whispered. “Doesn’t matter where or when, they’re all the same.”

“Missh Lelanea!” someone shouted.

Rebecca’s eyes went saucer wide as she turned to see the tall, scary man from the photograph stalking across the exhibit hall toward them. He loped with long strides, stiff in his steps like a scarecrow that just jumped down from his pole and didn’t know how to walk yet. She grabbed the woman’s slacks and tugged, trying to warn her of the danger.

The woman laughed warmly as she stood and took Rebecca by the hand. “It’s all right, little one. Ched looks rough, but he’s a good man.”

He might have been a good man, but the closer he got, Rebecca thought he stank to high heaven. She pinched her nose and scooted behind the woman’s leg, trying to hide from the man and the stink. He stunk in a combination of her uncle Patrick and that one time Miss Kitty crawled under the house and never came back out. Which is to say he smelled like whisky and death.

“You sheen Dodger?” the man asked as he joined them at the exhibit. He slurred when he spoke, just like Uncle Pat.

“Not yet,” the woman said. “He should have been back by now. We only have a few minutes left.”

“He’ll make it in time. He alwaysh doesh.” The thin man proceeded to smile wider, and Rebecca thought the sight of it would make her sick.

“Do you think Rex came to this era?” the woman asked.

“Naw,” the man said. “I think he went backwardsh. He’ll make himshelf the king of shome ancient shivilizashion or shomething like that. The little shit.”

“Ched! Watch your language.” The woman patted Rebecca on the head.

The thin man nodded down at Rebecca, tipping his striped cap. “Shorry little misshy. Didn’t shee ya down there.”

Rebecca recognized his hat. It was an engineer’s cap.

“There he is,” the woman said. She waved and whistled across the crowded exhibition hall. “Dodger! Over here!”

Rebecca watched as the third man from the photograph walked toward them. He was just as handsome as he was in the picture, and just as sad. People stepped away from him as he approached, parting as if they knew to get out of his way.

“You two ready?” he asked once he was with them.

“Almost,” the woman said. “We have a few minutes yet, and this young lady has lost her father.” The woman guided Rebecca to middle of them, where she stood wide eyed staring at the others.

The handsome man lowered to a crouch. “Lost your dad, huh? I reckon we can take a moment to help out a pretty lady.”

Rebecca wanted to explode. There was no way he was talking about her.

“Where did you see him last?” the woman asked.

Rebecca pointed at the line for the water closet.

The handsome man chuckled, a strange sound from such a sad man. “You know what they say, don’t you?”

Rebecca shook her head.

“When you gotta go, you gotta go.” He touched her nose and winked.

“Dodger,” the woman said. “This isn’t funny. He abandoned her here.”

“He didn’t abandon her. He’ll be back. Won’t he?”

Rebecca nodded. Of course dad would be back for her. Wouldn’t he?

“Another myshtery sholved,” the thin man said.

The handsome man stood again, and took something from a pocket inside his jacket. “I guess that means we should get a move on. Rex isn’t here. I think Ched was right after all. He must’ve gone back instead of forward.” A steady ticking sounded from his hands.

“Is the T.O.C.K. primed?” the woman asked.

“Yeah.”

He held a metal device out between the three of them. It was round and made of metal and was covered in buttons and switches and—save for the single fact that it looked brand spanking new—it was an exact duplicate of the thing in the display case.

Rebecca gasped and covered her mouth. If they had one, then they must know what it was! She had so many questions, but still couldn’t find the voice to speak.

“You two set?” the handsome man asked. The ticking quickened.

The woman nodded and grabbed one edge of the thing.

The thin man looked down at Rebecca as he also grabbed the thing. “Ya besht shtep back a bit, hun. I don’t want ya to get yashelf hurt.”

Rebecca did as told. Maybe she was wrong about him. He seemed like a nice man. Smelly, but nice.

“Look away or close your eyes,” the handsome man said. “The light might make you nauseas.”

And she was going to follow his command when the handsome man did something that made her keep right on staring at him. He smiled at her, and for a moment he didn’t seem quite so sad.

The device ticked faster and faster until it gave a single loud click. Everything around her went quite; the crowd, the music, the sound of her thumping heart. A bright light swelled and flared from the device, much like a photographer’s flash, until it swallowed the three. Rebecca finally had to cover her eyes; the man was right, the light was so bright it made her want to be sick.

When she looked again, the three people were gone.

Her drink hit the exhibit hall floor with a soft slush.

Rebecca finally found her voice.

“Wow,” was all she could say.

Fairgrounds: Angel on the Airfield

~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~
by Regina Riley
~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~

Lying back in the warm grass, she turned her eyes to the sky and watched another dirigible pass overhead. The airship’s shadow inched across the field until it touched her, moved over her, then swallowed her whole. Her skirt fluttered and her blouse ballooned with each gust.

Most folks preferred watching from the safety of the unloading docks, but she wasn’t satisfied unless she could feel the air pressure change as the ships passed by. She closed her eyes and breathed deep the steam and oil and exhaust, memories flooding her senses.

An airship so long ago …
A handsome stranger …
Perfect love …
Absolute danger …

“Grandma!” a little boy shouted.

Startled, she turned her head in the grass and watched as a toddler ran across the edge of the airfield. The chunky little boy stumbled and tumbled past the line of onlookers and straight into the arms of a woman not much older than her. Grandma, she thought. How odd that sounds. No one called her that. She wasn’t gifted with children of her own, grand or otherwise, but that was okay. They found they didn’t need kids once they had each other.

They had perfect love, and faced absolute danger to win it.

Just over head, a man asked, “Ma’am? Are you all right?”

For a moment she thought it was his voice, her beloved, but she opened her eyes to find the shadow of a man—far too large to be her darling—towering over her. How long had he been standing there? She hadn’t even realized she closed her eyes again.

“Do you need a hand?” he asked, his voice bearing a slight accent she thought she recognized but couldn’t quite place.

“No, thank you,” she said. She sat up and brushed the loose grass from her blouse, trying her best to act her age, which she never quite felt no matter how many years passed. When she dared look at him again, she found he had crouched to her level, and the sight of him hitched her breath in her throat.

He was devilishly handsome; dark haired and scruffy, with brown eyes that had a sense of danger about them. And she knew danger when she saw it, having lived in its shadow for so very, very long. He dressed in an outdated fashion, an old western style that would have been quite fitting in her own youth. Atop this he was armed, sporting about his hips a pair of the largest pepperbox guns she had ever seen. Or were they Colt revolvers? It was hard to tell from this angle. She leaned in for a closer look, her curiosity getting the best of her as usual.

“Can I help you with something?” he asked.

She snapped her gaze his waist to his face. From his wide smile, she knew she had been caught staring at his guns. What he must think of her! An old woman staring at a younger man’s pistols! “I was just watching the ships pass.”

“I can’t fault you for that.” The stranger turned his face to the sky and whistled. “Where I come from this kind of thing would be quite a surprise to most folks.” He chuckled a moment then added, almost under his breath, “Then again, a lot of things in my time are still quite the surprise to me.”

“Do they not have airships where you live?”

“Yes ma’am. Just not quite so many. Or so fast. Or so big.”

“I know what you mean. I used to travel on one, but nothing like these leviathans.”

“You?”

“Yes. In my youth. The Widow was a cargo ship. A very small cargo ship. Small but homey.” She smiled wistfully with the memory, until she realized she was embarrassing herself. When she caught a glimpse of his equally wistful smile, it forced her into a blush. “I guess I sound silly talking about a vehicle like it was home.”

“Not at all. I know the feeling. I travel by train, you see, and it’s more than just home for me. It’s becoming my whole life.”

“Then you do understand.”

“Yes, ma’am. I reckon I do.”

They shared a moment of silence; she thinking about all the times—the good and the bad—she spent aboard the Merry Widow, and the stranger thinking … well who knew what handsome young men thought these days.

He interrupted their moment of reflection by removing something from his jacket and looking at it, as if checking a pocket watch. “I hate to leave such a pretty lady all alone out here on such a nice day, but my friends are waiting for me. I’m afraid I have to move-a-get-on or they might just leave me behind. Will you be all right?”

She doubted anyone would willingly leave somebody like him behind. “It’s fine, young man. You’ll be pleased to know I’m not here alone. My husband has gone to fetch our picnic basket. He should be back any moment now. You should hang about if you can. I’m sure he would love to meet you.”

“I appreciate that, but I really must be goin’.” He stored the item again, stood and tipped his hat to her. “G’day to you, ma’am.” The stranger turned, as if to leave, but didn’t. Facing her again, he asked, “Have you seen anything unusual today? Anything …” He paused to draw a deep breath as he rubbed at the back of his neck. “This is going to sound all kinds of strange but bear with me here. Have you seen anything that seems like it just doesn’t belong?”

All kinds of strange? Even with his odd looking weapons, the young man had no idea what strange was, much less all kinds of it. She could teach him a thing or two about strange. After all, she was madly in love with the strangest thing to ever walk the face of the earth. And had been for years.

Smiling wide she lied to him. “No, sir. I can’t say I have.”

He eyed her for just a second, a sly smile playing over his lips. “I thought as much. Thanks again.” The stranger tipped his hat to her and walked off with the long strides of a determined man.

She watched him weaved through the crowd, folks moving almost instinctively out of his way. In moments he disappeared into the exhibition hall and was gone.

“Are you hungry yet?” another man asked.

This time she recognized the speaker as she recognized the sound of her own breath, her own heartbeat, her own soul. He was already seated beside her on the grass, with the basket open, spreading their lunch between them. He wouldn’t eat now, of course. Couldn’t eat now. Not the way he took food. Certainly not in public! But he would nibble and sip, just to feel real. She wouldn’t deny him a single chance to feel as real as he made her feel loved.

“Who was that man?” he asked.

“I’m not sure,” she said. “But if I didn’t know better, I would’ve thought he was looking for you.”

He stopped cold and stared at her in horror. “Do you think-”

“No silly,” she said, and giggled. “I just meant he was looking for trouble.” She looked out across the field again and sighed. “He’ll find it to. That much is sure.”

Her husband caressed her shoulder. She shuddered under his touch. Over forty years had passed between them and she still trembled when he laid hands on her. He took her by the chin and turned her to face him again, holding her gaze with his copper eyes.

“He should look for love,” he said. “It’s much more rewarding.”

“Everyone should look for love,” she whispered. “But not everyone will find it.”

“Not everyone can, because not everyone is blessed with an angel.”

His lips fluttered over hers before he captured her mouth into a sweet, hot kiss.

We walk around the corner and find these lurking about...

The Greyfriar
Vampire Empire 1
by Susan Griffith and Clay Griffith
win this at My Bookish Ways -ends July 5

Description from the amazon:
In the year 1870, a horrible plague of vampires swept over the northern regions of the world. Millions of humans were killed outright. Millions more died of disease and famine due to the havoc that followed. Within two years, once great cities were shrouded by the grey empire of the vampire clans. Human refugees fled south to the tropics because vampires could not tolerate the constant heat there. They brought technology and a feverish drive to reestablish their shattered societies of steam and iron amid the mosques of Alexandria, the torrid quietude of Panama, or the green temples of Malaya.
It is now 2020 and a bloody reckoning is coming.

Princess Adele is heir to the Empire of Equatoria, a remnant of the old tropical British Empire. She is quick with her wit as well as with a sword or gun. She is eager for an adventure before she settles into a life of duty and political marriage to man she does not know. But her quest turns black when she becomes the target of a merciless vampire clan. Her only protector is The Greyfriar, a mysterious hero who fights the vampires from deep within their territory. Their dangerous relationship plays out against an approaching war to the death between humankind and the vampire clans.

The Greyfriar: Vampire Empire is the first book in a trilogy of high adventure and alternate history. Combining rousing pulp action with steampunk style, The Greyfriar brings epic political themes to life within a story of heartbreaking romance, sacrifice, and heroism.

Fairgrounds: Ithilnin

~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~
by Jess C. Scott
~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~

As Ithilnin, the Elven rogue, wanders around the fair exhibits of the glorious Panama-Pacific International Exposition, he muses on the evolution of transportation. He thinks of the underground train system he’s accustomed to, 120 years in the future.

[Excerpt: from Chapter 7 of The Other Side of Life]

Nin swung himself up into the carriage, and then held a hand out to lead her in. Anya could see him, standing over the control panel. “Our side project—it’s nice what a little bit of magic can do.” His voice was more muffled, though Anya could still make out what he said. “It’s our underground train network.”

Nin scanned a hand over a flat black screen, as a demure, programmed voice greeted him, “Hello, Nin.”

Anya stepped in, as the interior lights began to come on, giving the carriage a luminous glow. The carriage could hold about ten individuals, maybe a few more, if they were all Anya’s size.

“I could probably live here, if I had no other choice,” Nin remarked, standing before the flat black screen. “You can change the mood setting too.”

Anya looked up at him, removing her goggles when some lights in the carriage came on.

Nin moved one of the controls on the panel—and some classical music came on via the speakers located in the corners of the train carriage.

“The Blue Danube,” Nin said, taking Anya’s hand.

She froze, grinning back at him. “I can’t dance.” Not with the grace and elegance this type of dance required.

“Worry not—the waltz is a dance performed in triple time.” Nin’s arm rested on Anya’s lower back, while his left hand lifted up Anya’s right hand, in a poised, but relaxed position. “Just flow...”

As it were, the music had reached a slower segment. Anya followed Nin’s lead, as he gently dipped and raised their bodies with each step, enhancing the flow of their movements.

They glided together to the enchanting waltz music, till the music started to pick up in pace and intensity, and Nin stopped abruptly. Their bodies were still in a frame, and his head was held high. Anya turned her head to the side for a moment, and Nin tucked a stray strand of her hair behind her ear. Anya edged back a little, when he seemed to lean in, as she leaned further back, resting on his arm that was supporting her back.

“Is…this your secret hideout?”

Nin held her gaze for a second, before bringing their bodies up again. He let her go. “Oh no…this does way more than that.”

Of all the moronic questions to ask…Anya thought to herself. But he wouldn’t have kissed me—it was just part of the dance. She placed a hand on the cool metal interior of the carriage. “How did this begin?”

Nin was more than happy to share the story. “Dresan and I were standing on a street one night,” he narrated, with a theatrical, dramatic flair. “The road glistened before us…it was empty…it was ours. We cast a bet…to see who could travel the fastest on two bikes we hijacked. We tried to cheat, using magic.”

“What kind of magic? Did it work?”

Nin shook his head. “We knew of an old spell for speed. We chanted it—nothing happened. But later that night, I found an old discarded train carriage”—Nin put a hand out—“this train carriage, underground. This time, the spell worked!” Nin’s energy and zest for innovation reminded Anya of Willy Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, a book by one of her favorite authors. “Dresan and I added a few more functions along the way. Tavia worked on the portals, which work a little bit like movable train stations. One thing led to another. We have a nice way to travel now.”

Nin was glowing with excitement. The train was a perfect example of art and science—of magic, and logic—coming together in harmony. It was proof that the two disciplines could not only exist side-by-side, but could be combined, to create inventions that had never been accomplished before.

Anya looked at him, in quiet admiration. “Where does this go? Why does the magic only work underground?”

“Anywhere—as long as there’s one of our passageways, to exit. We travel station to station underground, then walk a bit to the specific openings above ground. Which usually come in the form of doors hidden in trees…”

Anya thought back to the tree, which led to the narrow staircase, down to where the elves lived. The band of Elven thieves she knew, that is. She could have passed hundreds, or even thousands of trees, which led to passages she had never known.

“It travels at an exponential rate—basically,” Nin continued, “it keeps going faster and faster…so you can get to faraway destinations quickly, too.”

Nin didn’t answer Anya’s second question about the magic’s selective properties. He liked saving the better things for later. Before Anya could re-ask him, he took a seat next to her. “Hold on.”

Anya sat still, her senses engaged in wild anticipation. She took a deep breath, as the train approached the blue portal.

In a second, the surrounding scenes were shadows flitting amidst a brilliant burst of cosmic light that spread out like an ocean’s infinity. The train sped ahead. Anya stayed close to Nin, holding onto his hand as tightly as she could, exhilaration burning through her.

Excerpt from Celia's review part 1:

“Wild Magic” by Ann Aguirre
A classic forbidden romance between classes, which also pits magic against technology, and disenfranchised natives against privileged invaders, is the foundation of this entry. Predictable and sweet, it’s sure to please fans of YA paranormal romance.

“Deadwood” by Michael Scott
Old West, meet steampunk. This tale introduces two characters in an adventure too brief to do them justice. It feels a bit like the film Wild, Wild West, and skimps on personal development to describe a world that we might like better if we had more time in it.

Excerpt from Celia's review part 2:

“The Airship Gemini” by Jaclyn Dolamore
Take Siamese twins, put them on an airship over the Atlantic, and stir in a shapeshifter hoping to separate them. Result: a quirky tale just on the wrong side of believable. Part of the trouble undoubtedly lay in the length of the story (too short), but the combination of fantastical elements didn’t help either. Not without merit, but not essential.

“The King of Greenlight City” by Tessa Gratton
A charming and surprising story that grabbed my attention and didn’t let go. It reminded me that magic is dangerous AND wondrous (which is the best sort of realization). Definitely an example of the kind of tale that takes you somewhere you didn’t expect to go, and teaches you something new about the world.
