Genre: Action, Horror, Mystery, Sharks
Paperback: 352
Rating: 4

First sentence(s):
The great fish moved silently through the night water, propelled by short sweeps of its crescent tail.

Here is Peter Benchley’s classic suspense novel of shark versus man, which was made into the blockbuster Steven Spielberg movie. The Jaws phenomenon changed popular culture and continues to inspire a growing interest in sharks and the oceans today.

When Peter Benchley wrote Jaws in the early 1970s, he meticulously researched all available data about shark behavior. Over the ensuing decades, Benchley was actively engaged with scientists and filmmakers on expeditions around the world as they expanded their knowledge of sharks. Also during this time, there was an unprecedented upswing in the number of sharks killed to make shark-fin soup, and Benchley worked with governments and nonprofits to sound the alarm for shark conservation. He encouraged each new generation of Jaws fans to enjoy his riveting tale and to channel their excitement into support and protection of these magnificent, prehistoric apex predators.

My two-bits:

Although this sea battle of man vs. shark did not come off so much as a horror story (like the movie version), it included summer time small town doings in regards to the locals, their relationships and politics.

Just released: March 20, 2017
Publisher: Power to the Pen
Genre: Action, Historical, WWII
Paperback: 356
Rating: 4

First sentence(s):
Unbeknownst to me, my training started as a child, long before the Nazis came to power, before the war, and before my stay at the prestigious Swiss finishing school, Château Mont-Choisi in the idyllic town on Lausanne. Had my mother realized the path her machinations put me on, I doubt she would have ever let me out of her sight.

A beautiful American spy flees into the night. On her own, she must live by her wits to evade capture and make it to the safety of the Allied forces. Lily Saint James grew up traveling the European continent, learning languages as she went. In 1938, her mother’s abrupt death brings her back home to Washington, D.C., and after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Lily comes to the attention of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Her knowledge of German, French, and Italian makes her the perfect OSS Agent, and her quick thinking places her as a nanny in the household of an important German Army Colonel, where she is able to gather intelligence for the Allies. After her marketplace contact goes missing, she makes a late-night trip to her secondary contact only to find him under interrogation by the SS. When he commits suicide, she flees into the frigid winter night carrying false identification papers that are now dangerous and a mini film cartridge with vital strategic information. In order to survive, Lily must make it out of Germany, into the hands of Allied-controlled France, through a path fraught with peril.

PeekAbook:

My two-bits:

Lots of spy related action set during WWII with a dash of romance.

The heroine was pulled through various scrapes and sticky situations with panache. She was likable and had me rooting for her the whole way.

Got to learn a bit about the OSS and their efforts.

Paperback: 454 pages
Rating: 4

First sentence(s):
Flying a biplane, especially one as rickety as a war-surplus Curtiss JN-4D, meant being ready for anything. But in Hitch's thirteen years of experience, this was the first time "anything" had meant bodies falling out of the night sky smack in front of his plane.

In the high-flying, heady world of 1920s aviation, brash pilot Robert “Hitch” Hitchcock’s life does a barrel roll when a young woman in an old-fashioned ball gown falls from the clouds smack in front of his biplane. As fearless as she is peculiar, Jael immediately proves she’s game for just about anything, including wing-walking in his struggling airshow. In return for her help, she demands a ride back home . . . to the sky. Hitch thinks she’s nuts—until he steers his plane into the midst of a bizarre storm and nearly crashes into a strange airship like none he’s ever run afoul of, an airship with the power to control the weather. Caught between a corrupt sheriff and dangerous new enemies from above, Hitch must take his last chance to gain forgiveness from his estranged family, deliver Jael safely home before she flies off with his freewheeling heart, and save his Nebraska hometown from storm-wielding sky pirates. Cocky, funny, and full of heart, Storming is a jaunty historical adventure / dieselpunk mash-up that combines rip-roaring steampunk adventure and small-town charm with the thrill of futuristic possibilities.

PeekAbook:

My two-bits:

Lots of aerial scenes both stunt and serious flying in a small town setting with its set of colorful characters.

I liked the character growth with the main character, Hitch. He was one of those unsuspecting and unexpected heroes with a bit of a transformation that was fun to see.

For this story, I was more interested in character development than the steampunk part (which was on the light side).

A few illustrations are sprinkled throughout the book.

Welcome to Wheel: a perfect world without poverty, disease, or want. Tinkered and tuned in every way for maximum order by Rank and Spoke, every child knows her destiny. So long as she can take the neural implant.

The defective, whose bodies reject the implants, do not exist. Ghosts. Cyphers. Haunting the edges of society, living on scraps, killed for sport. A lucky few, the Crudrats, scrape out a perilous living cleaning the toxic wastes from the great machines that power the station.

Meet Maura. Cypher. Crudrat. Grown too tall, alone in a spaceport with no use for her, doomed to starve. With only her crud-eating murmel and an alien monster to help her, she must find a way to survive, or escape, before they catch her and blow what’s left of her life, and her companions, into space.

From the pen of Gail Carriger, Artistic Whispers Productions presents an unabridged full-cast young-adult adventure that brings golden age-style science fiction into the 21st century, stuffs it full of heart, and gives it a finely polished, gleaming edge.

My two-bits:

I found this full of action and aliens in a sci-fi world with snippy and snarky dialogue that made for fun listening.

The language and slang in this world made this story special, light-hearted and entertaining.

Uzumasa Limelight (2014)

Uzumasa Limelight (2014)
Uzumasa raimuraito (original title)
Directed by: Ken Ochiai
Screenplay by: Hiroyuki Ono
-Action, Drama, Japan
imdb

Starring:
Seizô Fukumoto as Seiichi
Chihiro Yamamoto as Satsuki iga

My rating: 5

Per Japan Film Festival 2015:
A nostalgic portrait of kirare-yaku – an actor whose forte is being “cut to death” with a sword in samurai films, Uzumasa Limelight goes behind the scenes of the distinctive film genre. A professional extra named Kamiyama (played by real-life kirare-yaku Seizo Fukumoto) has devoted 50 years of his life as a kirare-yaku. When the studio decides to discontinue its productions, he finds himself at a loss. Will the art of dying by the sword live on?

PeekInside:

My two-bits:

Loved the juxtaposition of past and present actors and film making in a Kyoto movie studio - especially in regards to samurai films.

Although the reality of aging was sad to watch, sweet and tender relationship between master and student actors was beautiful to behold.

Gained an appreciation for actors slated "to be killed" in films. There surely is an art form to dying on screen.

Stone Rider series:
Stone Rider
Blood Rider - July 2016

In the vein of The Outsiders and the early Western novels of Elmore Leonard, this inventive debut novel, a cross between the cult classic Mad Max movie series and Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, blends adrenaline-fueled action with an improbable yet tender romance to offer a rich and vivid portrayal of misfits and loners forced together in their struggle for a better life.

Adam Stone wants freedom and peace. He wants a chance to escape Blackwater, the dust-bowl desert town he grew up in. Most of all, he wants the beautiful Sadie Blood. Alongside Sadie and the dangerous outsider Kane, Adam will ride the Blackwater Trail in a brutal race that will test them all, body and soul. Only the strongest will survive.

The prize? A one-way ticket to Sky-Base and unimaginable luxury.

And for a chance at this new life, Adam will risk everything.

My two-bits:

GOT me at the get go!

Bykes and bonding in a desert race setting makes this an exciting read with a wild west vibe. There's even a couple showdowns to spice things up.

Loved the three main characters, each heroes in their own special and unique ways.

The snappy and snarky dialogue (or lack of) was so amusing. It had me chuckling at times.

Can't wait until the next book is released next year to find out more about the mysterious Sky-Base.

Seventeen series:
Soul Meaning
King's Crusade
Greene's Calling

From the award-winning series Seventeen comes a high-octane, action-packed twist on immortality. 'My name is Lucas Soul. Today, I died again. This is my fifteenth death in the last four hundred and fifty years.'

Soul is an outcast of the immortal societies. Born of a Bastian mother and a Crovir father, a half breed whose very existence is abhorred by the two races, he spends the first three hundred and fifty years of his life being chased and killed by the Hunters.

One fall night in Boston, the Hunt starts again, resulting in Soul’s fifteenth death and triggering a chain of events that sends him on the run with Reid Hasley, a former US Marine and his human business partner of ten years. From Paris to Prague, their search for answers will lead them deep into the immortal societies and bring them face to face with someone from Soul’s past. Shocking secrets are uncovered and fresh allies come to the fore as they attempt to put a stop to a new and terrifying threat to both immortals and humans.

Time is running out for Soul. Can he get to the truth before his seventeenth death, protect the ones he loves and prevent another immortal war?

My two-bits:

This story is filled with fighting action (guns and swords - katana). It is the introduction and start of a series that involve immortal beings. The immortals are not vampires which gives a refreshing take on another kind of paranormal creature.

I liked the friendship and light banter between the main character, Soul, and his business partner, Reid.

A bit of romance is included but not noticeable.

Heroines of Classical Greece series:
Medusa
Ariadne: A Tale of the Minotaur

In one of the most compelling tales from classical Greece since Mary Renault's Bull from the Sea and Fire from Heaven, author Scot Hines retells the legend of Medusa in a way that makes her feel like a contemporary millennial girl with very special problems.

Despite a semi-miraculous birth in the temple of Athena, Medusa is nothing more than a devoted priestess of the goddess, distinguished only by her beauty and piety. But after she is raped by the god Poseidon, her entire world is ripped asunder and she flees Poseidon's wrath through ancient Greece and beyond for the inconceivable crime of resistance.

In her wanderings, she encounters dangers and horrors, but also friends in unexpected places. Pursued by Poseidon's fury and his assassins, she is finally cornered in Egypt with only two choices: fight back or be destroyed with all she loves. But her only hope lies with the father of her children, the great love of her life and the man who is prophesized to kill her: Perseus.

As one in Hines' Heroines of Classical Greece series, MEDUSA will leave you longing for more--and you'll want to move immediately to ARIADNE A TALE OF THE MINOTAUR.

It’s intelligent YA with an emphasis on “A.” You'll want to recommend it to your friends--and especially to your daughters.

A committed bibliophile and neurologist Hines lives in Alaska and helps provide health care to some of the most incredible people in the world, the Alaska Natives. When not working, he is planning some wild adventure to the arctic, Patagonia, or the Himalayas. But more than anything, he loves blending tales of history, mythology, and science, and sees nothing incompatible in the mixture.

My two-bits:

I grew up with the stereotype of Medusa from the movie Clash of the Titans (1986). So, thought she was just an ugly monster with killer looks.

This book brought a better perspective of this mythical creature (so complex) and historical background that puts Medusa in a better light (in my eyes).

The relationship development between Medusa and Perseus was also interesting to read about especially knowing how it would end between them.

Jamie August series:
Ocean City Lowdown
book 2 - tba

Ocean City Lowdown introduces Eastern Shore Maryland reporter Jamie August, who has a talent for unearthing more than her editor wants and a weakness for Ravens jerseys and sparkly underwear. She is assigned to cover the grand opening of a big new housing development in Ocean City, Maryland. But instead of writing about wrap-around porches and rattan furnishings, she uncovers kickbacks and payoffs, blackmail and murder.

Jamie's tenacity, smarts, and sheer recklessness—plus some smokin’ striptease dance moves—can get her out of some tight spots, but are they enough to save her from a psychopathic arsonist and two generations of corrupt real estate tycoons?

My two-bits:

Had fun with this read especially because the main character, Jamie, has such a spunky and tough attitude. She has the instinct to right the wrongs using whatever means available which brings about some funny moments as well as sticky situations. In this story environmental issues are tackled.

In Jet Black and the Ninja Wind, multiple award-winning author, poet, and translator team Leza Lowitz and Shogo Oketani make their first foray into young adult fiction with a compulsively readable tale whose teenage heroine must discover if she can put the blade above the heart—or die trying.

PeekAbook:

My two-bits:

I found this to be an exciting read filled with the right amount of mystery, ninja action, Japanese history and heroine coming-of-age.

Wind as a entity, a kind of character in the story, brought a magical aura to the story that reminded me of the fantasy martial arts fight scenes in the movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon which is a genre I enjoy.

This story also got me thinking of family, family heritage and family loyalty.

THE RIP-ROARING SEQUEL TO THE GREATEST ADVENTURE EVER TOLD

Almost forty years following the events of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver have seemingly put their maritime adventures to rest. Jim has settled on the English coast with his son Jim, and Silver has returned to rural England with his daughter Natty. While their escapades may have ended, for Jim and Natty the adventure is only just beginning.

One night, Natty approaches young Jim with a proposition: return to Treasure Island and find the remaining treasure that their fathers left behind. As they set sail in their fathers' footsteps, Jim and Natty cannot imagine what awaits them. Murderous pirates, long-held grudges, noxious greed, and wily deception lurk wickedly in the high seas, and disembarking onto Treasure Island only proves more perilous. Their search for buried treasure leaves every last wit tested and ounce of courage spent. And the adventure doesn't end there, since they still have to make their way home...

My two-bits:
I should start by saying that I have not read the classic, Treasure Island, so this review is based solely on this story.

The allure and adventure that of Treasure Island drives the characters in this story. Along with the riches of the island the characters experience the consequences that are linked to the treasure which may not be as expected.

I found this an entertaining read, but not as rip-roaring as described in the book blurb.

Sometimes it's funny how fast things can change, and sometimes it's not...

Welcome to Albert Keane's beautifully designed medieval kingdom nestled in a completely isolated river valley in the Canadian wilderness. Peaceful, happy, and prosperous, it takes nothing from the modern world, not so much as a single clock.

There is a castle, of course, and a monastery. There is even a pitch dark, rat-infested dungeon - because you simply have to have one if you are trying to rule a feudal kingdom!

Farmers work the land, artisans ply their trades, monks keep school and visit the sick, and nobody (well, almost nobody) misses the modern world at all.

So why has Jack Darcey - actor, wanderer, ex-competitive fencer - been tricked and seduced into paying a visit? And why hasn't anyone told him that the only way to leave is a perilous trek across hundreds of miles of trackless wilderness without a compass or a map?

Because a tide of fear and violence is rising from the twisted ambitions of one of King Albert's nobles, and Albert's fortune teller believes that Jack could turn the tide - if he lives long enough ...

***

Seamlessly blending medieval and modern elements, The Kingdom on the Edge of Reality serves up a heady brew of action, humor, romance and satire in a kingdom set apart in time and space where reality is the dealer's choice.

My two-bits:
In-a-word(s): ripples

Gibbering Gnome Press Presents a Tale of Epic Fantasy for All Ages

"Are you going to tell us a story, Uncle?" asked Jasper.

"No. Not tonight, I think." Jasper's small shoulders slumped. "But if you think you're up to keeping another secret, I might be willing to tell you a tale."

"There's a difference?" asked Lily.

"Oh, yes, yes, yes. You see, a story can be made up as easily as you please, or not. But a tale, now that's a moon of a different color. A tale is an account of things in their due order, often divulged secretly, or as gossip. Would you like to hear one?"

Once upon a time, Lily and Jasper Winter had an uncle named Ebb. He liked to tell tales of a place called the Moon Realm, where nine moons swirled around one another, each inhabited by strange and wondrous beings: magical lunamancers; undersea merfolk; wise birds; winged dragons; and Lily’s favorite, the heroic, leonine Rinn. Uncle Ebb had quite the imagination.

Now, nine years after the tales began, he’s missing. Soon, so is Lily, transported to the Moon Realm by a mysterious coin.

But this Moon Realm is different, no more than a dystopian shadow of the storied worlds in Ebb's bedtime tales. Here, a villain named Wrengfoul, along with his evil minions, is attacking the other moons, stripping away what little magic and happiness remain. Had her uncle just been spinning tales of how he wanted things to be? Where did Ebb’s fantasy end and the real Moon Realm begin?

Separated from her brother, dodging fresh dangers on every new moon, Lily desperately sifts through Uncle Ebb’s shattered bedtime tales for shards of truth. Will she piece together enough clues to find her way home, or will she remain trapped in a faery tale gone mad?

Featuring twenty-two stunning full-color illustrations by Carolyn Arcabascio. Volume One of the young adult fantasy adventure series The Moon Realm.

A magical adventure, indeed! Lots of action and new worlds to discover.

One of the characters reminded me of my kitten who was recently added to the household. Similar coloring and looks based on the illustrations. Funny how coincidental things can pop up in books.

I liked how the bulk of this story had a focus on a female heroine - makes for an empowering story for girls to read.

Fourteen-year-old Durriken Brishen has lost his parents, his grandfather, and though he doesn't know it, his Gypsy culture's dangerous gift.

Taken in and raised on the rails by the first woman to pilot a freight train, Durriken has one remaining connection to his Romani roots: a small wooden box that hangs from the hammer loop of his overalls.

The last gift he received from his grandfather, the box contains the world's first chess set. But a piece is missing: the Red Queen. According to Durriken’s family lore, the complete set awakens the power of Tărie, a mercurial gift that confers unique abilities on each new Master.

When a suspicious fire erupts in the Chicago rail yard, Durriken's escape produces an uneasy alliance, though not without its silver lining. Dilia is a few inches taller, several degrees cleverer, and oh yes – very pretty. While Durriken is uneasy allying with a girl whose parents were convicted of sedition, there's no doubt she is a powerful partner. And while it's not immediately clear to either, her own Guatemalan culture and family history are deeply entwined with the ancient Romani mystery.

Jumping box cars, escaping riverboats, deciphering clues, crossing swords with the brilliant madman Radu Pinch – with great American cities as its backdrop – Gypsy Knights is the page-turning saga of Durriken Brishen and his quest to rediscover his past.

Quote to note:
Perhaps, my dear Radu, is a dangerous word.

I reeeeeally enjoyed this adventure! This is one of those books that engage you with its colloquialisms and colorful characters.

And too, the sights, sounds and food during the journey around the US via railway makes for an interesting travel guide of the past.

Down the Mysterly River by Bill Willingham

Down the Mysterly River
by Bill Willingham
illustrated by Mark Buckingham

Published: September 2011
Publisher: Starscape
Genre: Action, Fairy Tales, Fantasy
Hardback: 336 pages
Rating: 5

Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Goodreads

Down the Mysterly River is the children’s book debut of Bill Willingham, the creator of the #1 New York Times bestselling graphic novel series Fables. Complete with illustrations by Fables artist Mark Buckingham, it is a spirited, highly original tale of adventure, suspense, and everlasting friendship.

Max “the Wolf” is a top notch Boy Scout, an expert at orienteering and a master of being prepared. So it is a little odd that he suddenly finds himself, with no recollection of his immediate past, lost in an unfamiliar wood. Even odder still, he encounters a badger named Banderbrock, a black bear named Walden, and McTavish the Monster (who might also be an old barn cat)—all of whom talk—and who are as clueless as Max.

Before long, Max and his friends are on the run from a relentless group of hunters and their deadly hounds. Armed with powerful blue swords and known as the Blue Cutters, these hunters capture and change the very essence of their prey. For what purpose, Max can’t guess. But unless he can solve the mystery of the strange forested world he’s landed in, Max may find himself and his friends changed beyond recognition, lost in a lost world…

Amusing quote:
What did I say that was so bad? McTavish asked. I'm just trying to contribute to the discussion. You all said something, so I thought it was my turn to speak. This business of having friends is still new to me, but isn't that what friends do in a friendly conversation? We each take turns saying stuff, right? So I said stuff.
- page 137, chapter 12

My two-bits:
In-a-word(s): friends
Those of you who love fairy tales with talking animals (and other objects) will definitely get a treat from this story.

Watching the characters interact and tell their stories was the engaging and enjoyable part of this book. Didn't want the journey to end as I loved the banter and bonding between the character.

Arggg! Captain Acorne starts off quite the pirate rogue in his regards to his relationship with Tiola.

In addition, his life gets rocky as the past is revealed to us and catches up with him.

I love how there are strong female characters in this story and how they fend for themselves.

Again, loved the details of ships, sailing and the beauty of the sea.

Sooooo looking forward to the next installment of Captain Acorne's (and Tiola's) story.

Jabberwocky by Daniel Coleman

Jabberwocky
by Daniel Coleman

Published: 2011
Genre: Action, Fantasy
ebook
Rating: 5

Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Smashwords | Goodreads

“One, two! One, two! and through and through the vorpal blade went snicker-snack!”

Blood pounded in Tjaden’s ears as he breathed in the acrid odor, and his sword didn’t falter. Not after the convoluted road that had led him to set out alone to find and slay the manxome Jabberwocky. But the secrets he’d learned about the Jabberwocky’s sorrowful past made it a sour victory.

How different would the situation be if the girl he loved wasn’t at risk?

Why didn’t anyone tell him the dark secrets surrounding the Tumtum tree?

Jabberwocky, a short novel by Daniel Coleman, is the untold story inspired by Lewis Carroll’s epic poem. Meet the characters and creatures that inhabit the world long before Alice ever fell down the rabbit’s hole.

While staying true to every detail of Lewis Carroll’s masterpiece, Jabberwocky provides twists that will keep you turning pages. You might know how it ends, but you won’t believe how it happens.

Series:
Jabberwocky
Hatter

My two-bits:
In-a-word(s): elite
Loved how this story gives us more details on the various creatures that come from Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky poem.

In this novella the stanzas have their own fairy tale-like stories to reveal the mysteries behind each. The most interesting one of course was the story of the Jabberwock.

You will cheer for the hero and his lady love. And, you will boo the foe. But then, there is a twisty happening at the end where the foe is redefined.

Jabberwocky

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought--
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! and through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!"
He chortled in his joy.

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Bookcerpt: Bring it Close

Bring it Close
by Helen Hollick

Excerpt:
Tuesday, 1st October
Nassau
§1

Jesamiah Acorne, four and twenty years old, Captain of the Sea Witch, sat with his hands cradled around an almost empty tankard of rum, staring blankly at the drips of candle-wax that had hardened into intricate patterns down the sides of a green, glass bottle. The candle itself was smoking and leaning to one side as if drunk. As drunk as Jesamiah.

For maybe ten seconds he did not notice the two grim-faced, shabby ruffians sit down on the bench opposite him. One of them reached forward and snuffed out the guttering flame, pushed the bottle aside. Jesamiah looked up, stared at them as vacantly as he had been staring at the congealed rivers of wax.

One of the men, the one wearing a battered three-corner felt hat and a gold hoop earring that dangled from his left earlobe, leant his arms on the table, linking his tar and gunpowder-grimed fingers together. The other, a red-haired man with a beard like a weather-worn, abandoned bird's nest, eased a dagger from the sheath on his belt and began cleaning his broken and split nails with its tip.

"We've been lookin' fer you, Acorne," the man with the earring said.

"Found me then ain't yer," Jesamiah drawled. He dropped his usual educated accent and spoke in the clipped speech of a common foremast jack. He was a good mimic, had a natural talent to pick up languages and tonal cadences. Also knew when to play the simpleton or a gentleman.

He drained his tankard, held it high and whistled for Never-Say-No Nan, a wench built like a Spanish galleon and whose charms kept her as busy as a barber's chair.

She ambled over to Jesamiah, the top half of her partially exposed, and extremely ample bosoms wobbling close to his face as she poured more rum.

"What about your friends?" she asked, nodding in their direction.

"Ain't no friends of mine," Jesamiah answered lifting his tankard to sample the replenished liquor.

The man with the earring jerked his head, indicating she was to be gone. Nan sniffed haughtily and swept away, her deep-rumbled laughter drifting behind as another man gained her attention by pinching her broad backside.

"Or to be more accurate, Acorne, Teach 'as been lookin' for yer."

Half shrugging, Jesamiah made a fair pretence at nonchalance. "I ain't exactly been 'iding, Gibbens. I've been openly anchored 'ere in Nassau 'arbour for several weeks."

Since August in fact, apart from a brief excursion to Hispaniola - which Jesamiah was attempting to set behind him and forget about. Hence the rum.

"Aye, we 'eard as 'ow thee've signed for amnesty and put yer piece into Governor Rogers' 'and," Gibbens sneered, making an accompanying crude and explicit gesture near his crotch.

"Given up piracy?" Red Beard - Rufus - scoffed as he hoiked tobacco spittle into his mouth and gobbed it to the floor. "Gone soft 'ave thee? Barrel run dry 'as it? Lost yer balls eh?" Added with malice, "Edward Teach weren't interested in fairy-tale government amnesties, nor 'ollow pardons." He drove his dagger into the wooden table where it quivered as menacing as the man who owned it.

That's not what I've heard, Jesamiah thought but said nothing. He had no intention of going anywhere near Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, though Black Heart would be as appropriate. Even the scum and miscreants who roamed the seas of the Caribbean in search of easy loot and plunder avoided the bastard of a pirate who was Blackbeard.

Aside, Jesamiah was no longer a pirate. As Gibbens had said, he had signed his name in Governor Rogers' leather-bound book and accepted His Majesty King George's royal pardon. Which was why he had nothing better to do than sit here in this tavern drinking rum. Piracy, plundering, pillaging, none of that was for him, not now. Now, Jesamiah Acorne, Captain of the Sea Witch, had a woman he was about to marry, a substantial fortune that he could start using if only he knew what to spend it on, and the dubious reputation of becoming a respectable man of leisure.

He was also bored.

"You owe him Acorne," Rufus said. "Teach wants the debt paid."

Jesamiah raised the tankard to his mouth pretending to drink. He had been drunk but he had become stone sober the moment these bastards sat down at the table. Only he was not going to let them know it; read the rest here

Publisher: SilverWood Books
Genre: Action, Pirates
Paperback: 302 pages

Synopsis:
Ex pirate, Captain Jesamiah Acorne, is in trouble.

Big Trouble.

All he wants is to marry his girl, Tiola Oldstagh, and live contented aboard his ship, Sea Witch. But her husband refuses to grant a divorce unless Jesamiah agrees to retrieve some barrels of indigo and smuggle them out of the Spanish-held Caribbean island of Hispaniola.

The Governor of Nassau wants Jesamiah to go there too, to help incite a rebellion, and Captain Henry Jennings wants him to find a lost spy. To cap it all, Commodore Vernon of the Royal Navy wants to expand his fleet and craves the Sea Witch for himself.

As Jesamiah’s hopes for a quiet life tumble about him, the onset of war with Spain scuppers everyone’s plans. Hispaniola is governed by a tyrant who has promised to hang, draw and quarter Jesamiah if ever he sets foot there again, while the lovely widow, Senora Francesca Escudero would prefer to seduce him.

READ an excerpt.

Series:
Sea Witch - Voyage One
Pirate Code - Voyage Two
Bring it Close - Voyage Three
Ripples in the Sand - Voyage Four (expected publication Winter 2011/12)

Amusing quote:
Know-it-all know-nothings the lot of them.
- page 86, chapter 14

My two-bits:
In-a-word(s): bravado
The story continues (works as a stand-alone too) of Captain Acorne and his lady love, Tiola and a third side of a love triangle who shall remain nameless ;-D

This story is just as action packed as the previous and includes more pirate politics.

Love watching (reading) pirate lore and love of the sea (and freedom) come alive.
