Women Unbound Start of Challenge Meme

Women Unbound
-a challenge with a focus on women studies

November 1, 2009 to November 30, 2010

Start of challenge meme:

1. What does feminism mean to you? Does it have to do with the work sphere? The social sphere? How you dress? How you act?

Feminism in my college years was focused on fighting for pro-choice. Post college the focus regarding feminist issues has faded. Mainly because I have not experienced anything directly. And, I'm out of touch. With this challenge, I'm hoping to get back to some of the women studies books I've had packed away and to learn about the current feminist scene.

2. Do you consider yourself a feminist? Why or why not?

Yes

This quote sums it up for me:

It's important to remember that feminism is no longer a group of organizations or leaders. It's the expectations that parents have for their daughters, and their sons, too. It's the way we talk about and treat one another. It's who makes the money and who makes the compromises and who makes the dinner. It's a state of mind. It's the way we live now. -Anna Quindlen

3. What do you consider the biggest obstacle women face in the world today? Has that obstacle changed over time, or does it basically remain the same?

Positive self-image is an ongoing battle. Anorexia, bulimia, botox injections, plastic surgery, diets, etc. are all issues that continue to prevail and harm girls and women.

I'd be interested to hear if you have any thoughts on Feminism or if you have any books to recommend.
