Women Unbound Start of Challenge Meme

Women Unbound
-a challenge with a focus on women studies

November 1, 2009 to November 30, 2010

Start of challenge meme:

1. What does feminism mean to you? Does it have to do with the work sphere? The social sphere? How you dress? How you act?

Feminism in my college years was focused on fighting for pro-choice. Post college the focus regarding feminist issues has faded. Mainly because I have not experienced anything directly. And, I'm out of touch. With this challenge, I'm hoping to get back to some of the women studies books I've had packed away and to learn about the current feminist scene.

2. Do you consider yourself a feminist? Why or why not?

Yes

This quote sums it up for me:

It's important to remember that feminism is no longer a group of organizations or leaders. It's the expectations that parents have for their daughters, and their sons, too. It's the way we talk about and treat one another. It's who makes the money and who makes the compromises and who makes the dinner. It's a state of mind. It's the way we live now. -Anna Quindlen

3. What do you consider the biggest obstacle women face in the world today? Has that obstacle changed over time, or does it basically remain the same?

Positive self-image is an ongoing battle. Anorexia, bulimia, botox injections, plastic surgery, diets, etc. are all issues that continue to prevail and harm girls and women.

I'd be interested to hear if you have any thoughts on Feminism or if you have any books to recommend.

Women Unbound challenge

Women Unbound
November 1, 2009 to November 30, 2010

challenge hosted by
Aarti of Booklust

This is my acceptance post to be a Suffragette.

Being a Women Studies major, resistance against this challenge is futile.

Participants are encouraged to read nonfiction and fiction books related to the rather broad idea of ‘women’s studies.’

There are three levels you can choose as a reader (you can count books for other challenges as well):

Philogynist: read at least two books, including at least one nonfiction one.

Bluestocking: read at least five books, including at least two nonfiction ones.

Suffragette: read at least eight books, including at least three nonfiction ones.

Below is my tentative book list. It's a mix of YA, Japanese, art history and spirituality.

I will include review links on this page as posts are created. This list will inevitably increase in size. So you'll see extra goodies as time goes on.

As an added challenge to myself, I will also add movie-related review links here.
