Swan Maids should not be inside. Swan Maids are creatures of air and water. Enclosing chambers of stone chill us and we show anger. Thy keeper of the castle has given Maeve a chamber on the ground floor that opens to garden and lake.

Maeve is glad for mortal woman’s foresight although it irks her to be grateful to mortals. Mortals are stupid creatures, prone to illogical decisions bought on by emotion and the heart.

Maeve wonders what Chatelaine thought as swan maid emerged from the lake. Shall Maeve guess?

Chatelaine had never before seen a swan maid, so as she stared at the lake, she would have seen regal black swan that swam to shore. This swan, myself, stepped onto lakeside and as she did, legs elongated and body stretched, lithe form clothed in black satin as she shape-changed to swan maid.

Chatelaine gasped at mine own beauty, for Maeve is tall with pale skin. Eyes are as dark as deepest mines of Pymm and lips are like red of blood. But Chatelaine stared longest at cloak of feathers hanging over Maeve’s arm. Maeve could see her fingers twitch, desperate to touch plumage.

But Maeve would not let her. The last time a being touched Maeve’s cloak, he was Other and ripped out three feathers which meant Maeve was obliged to grant three wishes, to perform three duties and Maeve was not pleased for it was Færan called Liam to whom she was in thrall.

He had tried to join with Maeve in his youth but she had passed him over. He was callow and she could do better. He remembered the spurning and made Maeve pay.

And now Maeve is in stone chamber for night, with tapestries on wall that tell of Swan Brothers, of Princess of Swan Lake. Legends, mortals call them. Hah, if they only knew...
