My Little Red Book dress and giveaway

My Little Red Book
an anthology of personal reflections
in the tradition of The Vagina Monologues
by Rachel Kauder Nalebuff - my review of first edition

Release of new edition: April 12, 2010

Description from publisher's site:
MY LITTLE RED BOOK is an anthology of stories about first periods, collected from women of all ages from around the world. The accounts range from light-hearted (the editor got hers while water skiing in a yellow bathing suit) to heart-stopping (a first period discovered just as one girl was about to be strip-searched by the Nazis).

The contributors include well-known women writers (Meg Cabot, Erica Jong, Gloria Steinem, Cecily von Ziegesar), alongside today's teens. And while the authors differ in race, faith, or cultural background, their stories share a common bond: they are all accessible, deeply honest, and highly informative. Whatever a girl experiences or expects, she'll find stories that speak to her thoughts and feelings.

Ultimately, MY LITTLE RED BOOK is more than a collection of stories. It is a call for a change in attitude, for a new way of seeing periods. In a time when the taboo around menstruation seems to be one of the few left standing, it makes a difficult subject easier to talk about, and helps girls feel proud instead of embarrassed or ashamed.

By revealing what it feels like to undergo this experience first hand, and giving women the chance to explain their feelings in their own words, it aims to provide support, entertainment, and a starting point for discussion for mothers and daughters everywhere. It is a book every girl should have. Period.

  1. This sounds powerful. Pity I can't enter to win.

  2. I think most women can relate to the author in the video, most girls don't tell anyone when they first star their period. I wasn't one of those girls, but most are.

And after visiting Bloodbath, I LOVE the 5 Dexter Blood Slide Soaps. Wicked!

  3. I wonder if this is the book Lenore was talking about recently? I was surprised, she got pretty personal and laid things bare, but I certainly applaud her for it.
Spooky Spring Easter Casket giveaway...where do you find these things? lol
    Oh, and...
ZOMBIE FOOT SCRUBBY SOAP!!! Are you KIDDING me?! I think I just found a new favorite Etsy shop!

  4. Oh my god, I'm going to spend hours (and $$) on this site. I love the last line of the description for the zombie foot:
"Your feet will feel cool, tingly and soft as a baby maggot."

  5. This book sounds really cool! I love hearing about people's stories about their first periods. It feels like a special club only for girls! lol. I was lucky because I had an older sister and she helped explain everything to me.

I love the "Lip Embalm." The name made me laugh!

  6. The book sounds great! I think the BLOODBATH WHIPPED SUGAR SCRUB 2 For 22 is cool!

  7. The book sounds really interesting, and since I'm on this kick reading things about menstruation (currently it's an anthropological text about menstrual taboos) it seems fitting that I enter this contest.

Also, all of the soaps in the etsy shop are fabulous, and I kind of want all of them so that I can shock people by having them out and using them. XD

  8. This book would be great for my 10yr old daugher who has all the syptoms of becoming a young lady! Thank you so much for the opportunity given I think we definatly need to educate young girls. It would give them the power to not feel alone and the courage to say its JUST my period WHAT!? girls can be so mean now days expeciallyif it is in a public place. Every girl gets it its just a fact of life.

  9. I thought the story was interesting about how her great aunt got her first period fleeing from Nazi Poland to France and there was a strip search, which she kept a secret for 50 yrs.

I liked the Bloodbath Tatoo Balm.

    I am a follower and a subscriber.

  10. Wow this book sounds amazing! I think it is brilliant. I would have loved to have a book like this when I first got my period. Even today I love the idea of reading a book like this.

The Frankenstein and Bride Set was my favorite because my fiance and I love the story as well as the inside joke we have.

    I am a follower! :D
