International Book Club

Before I started this blog, I was participating (still am) in an online book group, International Book Club aka IBC, since 1999. The group interacts via email only.

The reading group was formed originally at women.com (an onelist mailing list group) which then became part of Geocities and now is part of Yahoo Groups.

The name for the group, IBC, was created based on the fact that the women who joined were from different parts of the world rather than the types of books read. The founding list owner was living in Norway and the co-founder was in New York. At the time, I was in Connecticut. When the founders left the group, I stepped in to co-moderate the list in the latter half of 1999.

The group is composed of about 40 women with 5 to 10 active during a given month. Also, depending on how a book impacts our worlds.

The books we've read have always been selected via nomination then vote by members. The only rules are that the books be fiction and in paperback. Below is the list of books we've read to date.

more details here

When I started this blog last year, my interaction with IBC was decreasing. Blogging about other books started to take over. I was falling behind in reading the monthly selections which I have always been good in keeping up with. Boo-hoo. Not good. :-(

Because I love IBC and want to continue to be a part of it, I've decided to incorporate it into this blog. So, another monthly feature on this blog will be the books read for IBC. I guess this could be counted as an ongoing challenge for me.

  1. Great idea to incorporate the book club with your blog. Maybe some of us bloggers can play along by reading some of the books that you choose. Will read your reviews and book club comments with interest.

  3. How cool, that sounds exactly like my online all-women e-mail bookgroup (Boekgrrls), except that we're communicating in Dutch -- so it's mostly Dutch participants ;)

I saw The Housekeepe and the Professor on last year's list... I just finished reading it for the Japanese Literature Bookgroup! Review pending though ;)

  5. Goodness "we" have read a lot of books!! I have been a member almost since the beginning and have read over 2/3 of the books each year - and have found many authors that I would NEVER have picked on my own!!! Love it, LOVE IT!!

  6. Hmm. A lot of these are great books, and a lot I haven't heard of. Going to have to look them up. I wish I had more time to take on another book club, but I just don't. :(
