Mad Men Mini: Perks - Joan

The term perqs or perks is often used colloquially to refer to those benefits of a more discretionary nature. Often, perks are given to employees who are doing notably well and/or have seniority. -wikipedia

First perk of the day for those of you who take the quiz:

Which Mad Men Character Are You?
(15 questions)

Here's me (i'm not surprised):

How about you?

*** Mad Men Joan Holloway puppet giveaway ***

Joan Holloway of Mad Men
Felt Finger Puppet

created and courtesy of abbey christine

Description from abbey christine's site:
That Joan Holloway, she's a smart cookie. The undeniable queen of the Sterling Cooper office, just when you think you've got her pegged, she'll surprise you. In her trademark slinky dress, gold pen necklace and big, 60's hair, Joan is impossible to ignore.

All puppets in my shop are free-hand cut and sewn from colorful 100% recycled felt. Unless otherwise noted, they generally measure approximately 2 inches wide by 4 inches tall (making them really more appropriate for a thumb than a finger, maybe?) Each is unique and one-of-a-kind and as with all handmade goods, may vary slightly from those pictured.

Most people love the vivacious and beautiful character, Joan Holloway.

Here's your chance to win a cute likeness of Joan.

Open to all.

Offer ends August 1, 2010

TO DO (3-parts):

1. Take the quiz and find out which Mad Men character you would are.

2. Visit abbey christine and tell me an item you like.

3. Let me know in comments your Mad Men character, abbey christine item and your email.

You Wish Cover

You Wish
by Mandy Hubbard
Release date: August 5, 2010

Description from the amazon:
Kayla McHenry’s sweet sixteen sucks! Her dad left, her grades dropped, and her BFF is dating the boy Kayla’s secretly loved for years.

Blowing out her candles, Kayla thinks: I wish my birthday wishes actually came true. Because they never freakin’ do.

Kayla wakes the next day to a life-sized, bright pink My Little Pony outside her window. Then a year’s supply of gumballs arrives. A boy named Ken with a disturbing resemblance to the doll of the same name stalks her.

As the ghosts of Kayla’s wishes-past appear, they take her on a wild ride . . . but they MUST STOP.

Because when she was fifteen? She wished Ben Mackenzie would kiss her. And Ben is her best friend’s boyfriend.

Larklight by Philip Reeve

Larklight:
A Rousing Tale of Dauntless Pluck
in the Farthest Reaches of Space
by Philip Reeve
illustrated by David Wyatt

Published: 2006
Genre: Steampunk, Action, Scifi, YA
Paperback: 416 pages
Rating: 5

Teaser:
I felt giddy with excitement as I lurked behind the knots of pipework, waiting to see the rogue alchemist whom Jack Havock must employ.

But to my surprise, blue Ssilissa was the only other being in the chamber. I watched with growing amazement as she pulled on a a heavy leather apron and gauntlets, and lowered smoked glass goggles over her eyes. Then she stooped over the alembic, and opened the thick access doorway in its top - but what she did there I could not see, for a blinding light filled the wedding chamber and a strange sort of music began.

-chapter 6, page 79

Larklight

Description from the amazon:
Arthur (Art) Mumsby and his irritating sister Myrtle live with their father in a huge and rambling house called Larklight…that just happens to be traveling through outer space.

When a visitor called Mr. Webster arrives for a visit, it is far from an innocent social call. Before long Art and Myrtle are off on an adventure to the furthest reaches of space, where they will do battle with evil forces in order to save each other—and the universe.

A fantastically original Victorian tale set in an outer space world that might have come from the imaginations of Jules Verne or L Frank Baum, but has a unique gravitational pull all its own…

My two-bits:
In-a-word(s): old ones

Such a delightful YA steampunkish book!

Hoverhogs
vacuums of the future

This action story weaves outer space, aliens, sea-like creatures, steampunk and victorian culture which suprisingly work well together!

Those who love the gadgets and gizmos of steampunk will love the glimpses of them in this story.

I was tickled by the illustrations in this book. They had the right amount of fantasy, whimsy and vintage victorian.

Ready for book 2, oh yeah!

Series:
Larklight
Starcross
Mothstorm

Dreaming Books - 7.27.10

Dreaming Books is a new meme I'm starting up on my site to let you know what old, current or upcoming book(s) I'm excited for and dreaming to get someday *sigh*. The books are in keeping with my usual genre favorites - YA, Jane Austen, steampunk, vampires, werewolves and zombiessssss.

Similar to Waiting on Wednesday and On My Wishlist memes already out there. If you have a post for books on your "want list" feel free to send me your link in comments. I'd be interested in taking a peek into what you're dreaming of...

The Best of Everything
by Rona Jaffe

Description from the amazon:
When Rona Jaffe’s superb page-turner was first published in 1958, it changed contemporary fiction forever. Some readers were shocked, but millions more were electrified when they saw themselves reflected in its story of five young employees of a New York publishing company.

Almost sixty years later, The Best of Everything remains touchingly—and sometimes hilariously—true to the personal and professional struggles women face in the city.

There’s Ivy League Caroline, who dreams of graduating from the typing pool to an editor’s office; naïve country girl April, who within months of hitting town reinvents herself as the woman every man wants on his arm; and Gregg, the free-spirited actress with a secret yearning for domesticity. Jaffe follows their adventures with intelligence, sympathy, and prose as sharp as a paper cut.

Note: I'm interested in getting this for my Mad Men Reading Challenge

And there's a movie version made released in 1959 and a tv series too (1970):
