Dreaming Books - 6.22.11

Dreaming Books is a meme I started last year on my site to let you know what old, current or upcoming book(s) I'm excited for and dreaming to acquire someday *sigh*. The books are in keeping with my usual genre favorites - Jane Austen, steampunk, vampires, werewolves, YA and zombiessssss.

Similar to Waiting on Wednesday and On My Wishlist memes already out there. If you have a post for books on your "want list" feel free to send me your link in comments. I'd be interested in taking a peek into what you're dreaming of...

The Best of Everything
by Rona Jaffe

Description from the amazon:
When Rona Jaffe’s superb page-turner was first published in 1958, it changed contemporary fiction forever. Some readers were shocked, but millions more were electrified when they saw themselves reflected in its story of five young employees of a New York publishing company.

Almost sixty years later, The Best of Everything remains touchingly—and sometimes hilariously—true to the personal and professional struggles women face in the city.

There’s Ivy League Caroline, who dreams of graduating from the typing pool to an editor’s office; naïve country girl April, who within months of hitting town reinvents herself as the woman every man wants on his arm; and Gregg, the free-spirited actress with a secret yearning for domesticity. Jaffe follows their adventures with intelligence, sympathy, and prose as sharp as a paper cut.

Note: I'm interested in getting this for my Mad Men Reading Challenge

And there's a movie version made released in 1959 and a tv series too (1970):

My first pick is a book with a title similar to my meme and one that looks like a fun one for all booklovers...

The City of Dreaming Books
by Walter Moers

Description from the amazon:
The publication in 2005 of Walter Moers's The 13 ½ Lives of Captain Bluebear was an event--the hilarious epic fantasy garnered grand reviews and surprising sales, which continue to grow. In this new Zamonian adventure, Optimus Yarnspinner, a young writer, inherits from his beloved godfather an unpublished short story by an unknown author. His search for the author's identity takes him to Bookholm--the so-called City of Dreaming Books. On entering its streets, our hero feels as if he has opened the door of a gigantic second-hand bookshop. His nostrils are assailed by clouds of book dust, the stimulating scent of ancient leather, and the tang of printer's ink.

Soon, though, Yarnspinner falls into the clutches of the city's evil genius, Pfistomel Smyke, who treacherously maroons him in the labyrinthine catacombs underneath the city, where reading books can be genuinely dangerous.

In The City of Dreaming Books, Walter Moers transports us to a magical world where reading is a remarkable adventure. Only those intrepid souls who are prepared to join Yarnspinner on his perilous journey should read this book. We wish the rest of you a long, safe, unutterably dull and boring life!
