Word and Question: sunshine

Today's C A R N I V A L E events take us outside to the gaming booths.

Fancy a ring toss?

How about spinning the colorful lighted up wheel for a prize?

A-ha, this booth has a word game...

sunshine is shadowed
she speaks of days from the past

Off your smile, blinding me to

Word & Question: befallen

I am thrilled yet again to present another W&Q poetry piece received from antiaphrodite which is in keeping with my August Thrills-n-Chills month.

btw: today is the last day for submissions for the W&Q #15 edition.

As I continue along my way
Through this darkened fever dreamscape
Of cursed spaces bound in spells
-- Each one falls gently, without pause
The quiet steps that I take

For I know the path that I need to walk

With me I carry nothing
And both my hands are empty
While all my fingers twitch
-- Having been pricked, cut and scathed
More than I can now bear to recall

Empty but for the memory of thorns

I know what I have come to meet
And I--frail, hideous and small
I tremble as I draw even closer
To where it is that I must go

For what I crave is bound with what I fear
What I desire follows what I dread

And now, among those that have come to watch
The final act of this delirious dream-play
A ravenous hunger has befallen them
-- Having been promised by the idol
An appropriated taste of my blood

If all should stay until the end

Still, perhaps, in some fading dream
My hands will hold roses soon

Ten Little Zombies

Ten little zombies in a hurry to dine,
One was too plump and then there were nine.

Nine little zombies pounding at the gate,
One got shot-blasted and then there were eight.

Eight little zombies, the one named Kevin
Fell under a semi and then there were seven.

Seven little zombies flirted with some chicks,
One was a bad-ass and then there were six.

Six little zombies strugglin' to survive,
One ate his ownself and then there were five.

Five little zombies stranded on the shore,
In came a big wave and then there were four.

Four little zombies climbed the tall Bellfry,
One was scared of heights and then there were three.

Three little zombies crawled down the flue,
One turned sideways and then there were two.

Two little zombies now on the run,
Followed by steamroller, thus there's only one.

One little zombie moaning just for fun,
Looked in a mirror and then there were none.

Word & Question: attic

Wooooot! I present the second W&Q poetry piece received from Salome Ellen which is in keeping with my August Thrill-n-Chills month.

Salome Ellen says:
Since I'm generally a "scaredy-cat", my poem leans toward the "supernatural" end of things.

Adventure

I'm sure there are fairies
Around here somewhere.
When I was little
I saw them all the time:
Dancing in the garden,
Flitting above Mother's head
And winking at me,
Reflected in the mirror
In my room.

But Sister says
There are no fairies.
Only butterflies and shadows
And "figments of my imagination."
And she knows a lot.
She's old enough
To go to grade school now --
She reads these great big books
And thinks she knows it all.

But does she?
I just can't be sure.
Last night I'm pretty sure I saw
A fairy at the bottom of the stairs.
The fairy beckoned me
To come up to the attic where it's dark
And quiet. Sister thinks
It's damp and dusty so she won't
Go up there..... But I might.

When Esther was born, her eyes were pale blue.
They could see spirits, but nobody knew.

One too many tragedies turned them dark grey.
What ghosts they had greeted, she would not say.

A fire took her vision and blanched her eyes white.
It seemed she could see best when walking at night.

We welcomed the news that they had been sealed.
Then she was buried, her secrets concealed.

But sometimes I see her at night by our bed.
She holds scales and a sword and her eyes are bright red.

Original Sin
by Lisa Desrochers

Luc Cain was born and raised in Hell, but he isn’t feeling as demonic as usual lately—thanks to Frannie Cavanaugh and the unique power she never realized she had. But you can’t desert Hell without consequences, and suddenly Frannie and Luc find themselves targeted by the same demons who used to be Luc’s allies.

Left with few options, Frannie and Luc accept the protection of Heaven and one of its most powerful angels, Gabe. Unfortunately, Luc isn’t the only one affected by Frannie, and it isn’t long before Gabe realizes that being around her is too…tempting. Rather than risk losing his wings, he leaves Frannie and Luc under the protection of her recently-acquired guardian angel.

Which would be fine, but Gabe is barely out the door before an assortment of demons appears—and they’re not leaving without dragging Luc back to Hell with them. Hell won’t give up and Heaven won’t give in. Frannie’s guardian exercises all the power he has to keep them away, but the demons are willing to hurt anyone close to Frannie in order to get what they want. It will take everything she has and then some to stay out of Hell’s grasp.

And not everyone will get out of it alive.

Here are the rules and mechanics per Shredded Cheddar:

1) On the first Wednesday of the month, the host posts a notice asking everyone who wishes to play to send him one word and one question. Then everyone has to e-mail him by the first Friday.

2) The host randomises the words and the questions and makes sure that nobody ends up working with one (or worse, both!) of his submissions.

3) On Sunday, the host e-mails everyone back with his word and question challenge.

4) Everyone writes a poem that uses the word and answers the question. (For more details, see my first post: Let's Play Poetry!)

5) The host for the week publishes his poem on the very next Wednesday. Everyone else gets a two-week grace period to leave the link to his poem in the host's combox. =)

6) We read everyone's poem and say something nice about each one in the respective comboxes.

7) Those who don't link up their poems before the next W&Q game is announced will have to sit out the prompts exchange of that next round but may share their poems in the combox for that round. Check this page regularly for the next W&Q date.
