SteamPink: coach car - Octavia

Meet: Octavia Pye
Occupation: Airship Captain
Location: the sky
Main mode of transportation: HIMA Tesla - airship
Genre: Steampunk, Action, Romance, Time Travel

Teaser:
"Nothing wrong with an off-the-rack model, either. I bought a great Victorian frock coat that way, although I haven't had a chance to wear it to any steampunk events yet. don't have much in line of a costume, to be honest. You know, I have to say that your modded gun is awesome. I've tried my had at converting a couple of Nerf guns to something steampunk, but they never turn out. That looks really authentic. I particularly like the brass tubing. Can I see it?

"Sir!" I said, perhaps louder than was strictly polite, snatching back the Disruptor that he had managed to take from me, so baffled was I by his speech. I pointed the gun at his chest, and donned my most austere expression. "I am bound by the laws governing the Southampton Aerocorps to inform you that you are under arrest for unauthorized presence on a ship under contract for imperial business."

Steamed
by Katie MacAlister
Romance steam gauge: medium
- my review

Description from the amazon:
When one of Jack Fletcher's nanoelectromechanical system experiments is jostled in his lab, the resulting explosion sends him into the world of his favorite novel-a seemingly Victorian-era world of steampower, aether guns, corsets, and goggles. A world where the lovely and intrepid Octavia Pye captains her airship straight into his heart...

My Zombie Valentine by Katie MacAlister, Angie Fox, Marianne Mancusi, Lisa Cach

My Zombie Valentine

Bring Out Your Dead by Katie MacAlister
Gentlemen Prefer Voodoo by Angie Fox
Zombiewood Confidential by Marianne Mancusi
Every Part of You by Lisa Cach

Published: 2010
Genre: Romance, Zombies
Paperback: 360 pages
Rating: 4

Description from the amazon:
Tired of vampires and werewolves? This quartet of comedic zombie romances by bestselling authors will drive you mindless with hilarity!

Description from book cover:
Four women are about to dig up the truth
Tired of boyfriends who drain you dry?
Sick of guys who stay out all night howling at the moon?
You can do better. Some men want you not only for your body, but your brains. Especially your brains.

It's true! There are men out there who care -- early-rising, down-to-earth, indefatigable men who'll follow you for miles. They'll take the time to surprise you, over and over. One sniff of that perfume, and you'll have to use a shotgun to fight them off. And then, once you get together, all they want is to share a nice meal. And another. And another.

Romeo and Juliet, eat your hearts out.

My two-bits:
In-a-word(s): hungry 4 love

Four different takes on an unusual kind of love. Not to worry, instead of scary horror you'll get laughs and romance. For a fun and different perspective on paranormal love stories, check this bunch out.

Steamed by Katie MacAlister

Steamed
by Katie MacAlister

Published: 2010
Genre: Romance, Steampunk
Rating: 4

Description from the amazon:
Katie MacAlister takes on Steampunk-and romance gets hotter than ever...

My two bits:
In-a-word: fond

Lots-o-lovin' happening here. Unlike romances where tension builds before the two main characters connect, this couple are well aware of their feelings and don't waste precious time. So the dialog between the two is open and carefree.

Fun reading for a newbie steampunker like me! Elements of past, present and alternate worlds mesh well. Amongst the love scenes, there are adventures to be had with battle scenes and rescue mission.

And goggles? yessssss!

However, there's still the mystery of Mr Llama to unravel. Book 2 must be in the works???

Amusing quote:
So after I took a firm stand with Tavy and told her no, she couldn't turn into a steampunk version of Blackbeard, she demanded to know just how we were going to get Hallie free if she couldn't bathe the decks in blood."
-Jack (ARC page 229)

Jane Austen sighting:
I get bored at Jane Austen movies...
-Jack (ARC page 213)

Article from Katie:
What the Heck is Steampunk?

Interview with Katie at The Galaxy Express
excerpt:
The Galaxy Express: What inspired you to write a steampunk romance?

Katie MacAlister: Sometime early last year I had an itchy feeling that translated into a desire to write something new, something different, something that was going to knock readers’ collective socks off. I mulled over my choices, and wasn’t happy with any of them. One day I was talking with my editor about this itchy feeling, and a word suddenly glowed with blinding brilliance in what passes for my brain—steampunk. As a life-long history and science buff, I knew that steampunk would fit well with my character and voice, and to make it a romance? Oh, that was sheer bliss.

I took a look around, saw that there was little steampunk being published, and even less in romance, and knew I was onto something fresh and new that would hopefully excite readers as much as it did me.

Steampunk Weekly - 10

Steampunk Teapot
created by Michael Morarity

Habber the hoodle!

Habber the hoodle!

Standing at the helm, Jane directed Jade while waving her gloved hand about excitedly.

Yes, the hoodles have been habbered, sighed Jade with a bit of impatience, just a bit. Jade expertly flipped switches and turned knobs as she looked out the window.

Jane lifted her goggles off her eyes for closer inspection of the control panel.

Indeed. So they have. Well then, let's get this bubble aground. And make sure to...

Jade let Jane blather on as she followed the usual proper landing procedures for an airship such as theirs.

As the Tiny Bubble floated downward in a slow fashion, Jane scanned the busy street scenes below. Ladies were bustling down the streets with parasols and packages from their shopping excursions.

I do hope we can find a nice salon for a good spot of tea. We haven't had a decent pot since India.

~*~

*Jane and Jade are Victorian English ladies who have been on tour for the last month.

*I may include some of Jane and Jade's steam adventures in my Steampunk Weekly now and then as I receive transmissions from them.

*from Jane and Jade Escapades (vvb's itty-bitty steampunk fiction)
