Happy Release: Sacrifice by Tara Maya

The Unfinished Song:
Sacrifice
by Tara Maya
Just released: August 29, 2011

fyi: kindle version is currently available for 99 cents

Love is not stronger than Death. Except in faery tales...

Welcome to Faearth. The world is still young, fairytales are real, and humans are trapped between the immortal fae and the minions of Death. The war between the fae and the Deathsworn will tear apart two lovers and determine who will rule the world…the humans, their ancient rivals, the Aelfae…or Death.

About SACRIFICE, the third book in The Unfinished Song series

As war looms on the horizon, Kavio continues to teach Dindi forbidden magics. Dindi’s cohort of fellow Initiates secretly select her to be the target of a vicious prank; an enemy of Kavio has targets her for an even viler crime.

Meanwhile, Brena seeks allies hidden among the enemy, which puts her on a collision course with her former captive and husband, Rthan, who is sent to stop her by any means necessary.

As powerful magic spins out of control, the fae themselves are in peril, and what started as a tribal war could become the cataclysm that wipes humans from Faearth.

For, in Faearth, there is a price to be paid for breaking taboos, and it can only be atoned for with a terrible sacrifice.

A DESPERATE OUTREACH
After being unfairly exiled from his own people, Kavio may have found a new home, but only if he can protect it from another attack by the enemy. He gathers a small group to venture deep into the heart of enemy territory in search of the ultimate prize…peace.

But by the harsh laws of their land, one cannot both break taboos and keep the peace. They will have to choose, what, or whom, to betray.

The Unfinished Song series:
Initiate
Taboo
Sacrifice - Summer 2011

My two-bits:
In-a-word(s): betrayal
I liked the character development in this ensemble cast of humans, fae and shapeshifters. Kavio remains my favorite hero, so far.

This second book in the series also gets a bit more detailed with the history and lore of the different tribes.

I would love to see the dances described. And, hear the type of music that would be played. I wonder if Tara might consider making a book trailer with the sights and sounds of her characters.

Left me hanging at the end.

Initiate by Tara Maya

The Unfinished Song: Initiate
by Tara Maya

Published: 2010
Publisher: Misque Press
Genre: Action, Coming of Age, Fairy Tales, Fantasy, Romance, YA
ebook
Rating: 4

Description from the amazon:
DEADLY INITIATION

A DETERMINED GIRL...

Dindi can't do anything right, maybe because she spends more time dancing with pixies than doing her chores. Her clan hopes to marry her off and settle her down, but she dreams of becoming a Tavaedi, one of the powerful warrior-dancers whose secret magics are revealed only to those who pass a mysterious Test during the Initiation ceremony. The problem? No-one in Dindi's clan has ever passed the Test. Her grandmother died trying. But Dindi has a plan.

AN EXILED WARRIOR...

Kavio is the most powerful warrior-dancer in Faearth, but when he is exiled from the tribehold for a crime he didn't commit, he decides to shed his old life. If roving cannibals and hexers don't kill him first, this is his chance to escape the shadow of his father's wars and his mother's curse. But when he rescues a young Initiate girl, he finds himself drawn into as deadly a plot as any he left behind. He must decide whether to walk away or fight for her... assuming she would even accept the help of an exile.

The Unfinished Song series:
Initiate
Taboo
Sacrifice - Summer 2011

My two-bits:
In-a-word(s): Faerth
The setting of this story is in a hunter/gatherer kind of world that incorporates magic and the fae.

I liked learning about the coming of age process and watching the growing friendships with these characters.

Loved the humorous bits with the character, Gwenika. You can get a sense of her on this guest post from the author. She can be a hoot ;-D

Castle: Cellar

We find another interview - this time in the cellar...

~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~
by Tara Maya
~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~

I begin the interview in the cellar of the castle. I know that for my guests, medieval technology would seem advanced. But I think they will be comfortable in the earthy cellar, that is not so different from the subterranean kivas built by their own people.

My guest, Gwenika, arrives. Typical of her tribefolk, she is solid and healthy, with cropped, thick dark hair and sun-warmed skin that shines golden brown. Her dress is beaded with polished acorn caps and quail feathers, and she sports a single gold ring in her nose. She’s cradling a chipmunk.

GWENIKA: I hope this interview won’t take long. Not that I don’t enjoy talking to you! It’s just that I don’ have long to live.

Tara: It won’t take long…. Wait, why do you say you don’t have long to live? Are you worried that the Blue Waters warriors might attack?

GWENIKA: (Coughs dramatically.) No, it’s this terrible illness I’m suffering: Itchy Throat and Trembling Tummy Disease. It’s fatal. I know, because I had it last year too, and almost died, though, as usual, my mother and sister didn’t care at all, and my mother still insisted I practice dancing! But even if the Itchy Throat and Trembling Tummy doesn’t kill me, the Jiggling Toe Pox certainly will. (She lifts a leg and wiggles five healthy looking toes.) You see? The jiggle has already set in.

Tara: You wiggled your toes yourself.

GWENIKA: Well, yes, but that doesn’t change the fact I’m about to die! You’re just like all the rest. You don’t take my illnesses seriously!

Tara: How many illnesses do you have?

GWENIKA: At least three or four a day. But I’m not making it up! I really am hexed, only no one will believe me! Except Dindi.

Tara: Didn’t your mother advise you to stay away from Dindi?

GWENIKA: My ears are hurting, I didn’t hear that last question. It’s probably a case of Deafening Buzz, a terrible hex that makes your ears ring. But anyway, my mother worries too much. She had to raise my sister and me by herself, so she wants to make sure we have friends with high status. Dindi isn’t high status. Among our people, the Tavaedies, warrior-dancers who know the secrets of dancing magic, earn respect and prestige. No one in Dindi’s clan has ever been chosen to be a Tavaedi.

Tara: But Dindi wants to be a Tavaedi?

GWENIKA: More than anything! I’m worried for her. I don’t think she has a very good chance of passing the Test during our Initiation ceremony. But I don’t care if she has magic. She’s kind, and to me that’s more important. She’s the only one who took the time to listen to me, the only one who believed in me. Maybe she’s a little strange. But I don’t care. She’s my friend.

Castle: Gatehouse

After farewells with the knights, we hear a conversation in one of the guard rooms in the Gatehouse.

Let us do a bit of eavesdropping...

~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~
by Tara Maya
~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~

A big, muscular man with blue and black tattoos on his cheeks, chest and arms stomps into the room. Before I can begin the interview, he raises a spear and aims the point at my throat.

RTHAN: I am no woman’s slave!

Tara: Whoah, calm down. I never said…

RTHAN: I may have been taken captive in battle and given as a slave to an enemy female, Brena, but, no matter how beautiful or tempting she is, I will never be tamed. I will never forsake allegiance to my own people. And I will never, NEVER rest until I have avenged the deaths of my wife and daughter.

Tara: That’s fine, but…

RTHAN: Kavio may believe peace is possible between my tribe and our ancestral foes, but he is a fool. Or worse, a slippery eel. I suspect everything he has done has been a lie… a scheme to defeat his cousin and re-gain power in the homeland that exiled him.

Tara: So you don’t trust Kavio, but…

RTHAN: No one should trust him. He is half-fae. I don’t deny he wields great power, maybe even greater than my own. But among my people, his kind are Shunned.

Tara: …but what about Brena?

RTHAN: (silent)

* The Castle Gatehouse was the main entrance to the castle and therefore needed to be heavily guarded. It was defended by at least one portcullis which was a heavy grilled door that dropped vertically down to protect the main entrance. The Castle Gatehouse might also contain murder holes and arrowloops in the side walls. The Gatehouse, or main entrance, would be heavily barred. The Chapel was occasionally built in this vicinity - behind the Gatehouse. The enemy would then be seen to fire on the Chapel as they were attacking the main entrance to the castle - God was seen as being on the side of the Defenders of the castle! -per Part of a Castle
