Keep Calm: Zombies from Dust and Decay

zombie edition

Interview With The Undead

Vii: I'm glad you could join us today at vvb32reads.
MAD: It's my pleasure. Thank you for having me.

V: I understand you've recently read Dust & Decay. What did you think about it?
M: I thought it was great. There was lots of running, and screaming. Oh, and people got ate. Definitely a classic!

V: Um … okay. Could you be a little more specific?
M: (gleefully rubs hands together): There's this wonderful place called Gameland. And, some very considerate humans toss food … I mean …. other people, down into these cozy pits where zombies get to eat them. Very efficient setup.

V: (looks aghast): Those poor people! Gameland sounds awful!
M: Oh no. True, the pits are dug in the ground. Maybe a little paint, some curtains …

V: That's not what I meant.
M: (puzzled): You don't like the exercise? Zombies need exercise, you know. Slows down the decay, keeps 'em limber.

V: I guess what I'm trying to get at, is that the idea of a Gameland, where humans trap other humans inside pits filled with zombies, seems rather … cruel. Disgusting.
M: The zombies don't mind.

V: Hmm. What else can you tell us about Dust & Decay?
M: Yeah, okay. Well, there's this really annoying zombie hunter called Tom. He's an adult, so there's no excusing his behavior. And he teaches these teenagers – very impressionable at that age – how to fight zombies.

Dust & Decay
by Jonathan Maberry

V: Who are these teenagers?
M: (yawns): Oh, some snots from the first book, Rot & Ruin. Benny – he's Tom's younger brother. Then there's Nix, Chong, and some freaky lost girl they call Lilah.

V: So what's the plot about?
M: (puzzled): To my understanding, somebody heard a jet and decided to cross the zombie-infested ruins to see if they could track it down. They should have just minded their own damn business.

V: Wasn't there an evil guy called Charlie Pink-eye in the first book? Is he still around?
M: (all happily nostaligic): Good ol' Charlie! Did you know he fed me my first human? Salt of the earth, that guy!

V: (seriously appalled): Are you saying …
M: (wipes a tear from her cheek): Oh, yes. I'd been wandering for days when Charlie found me. Gave me my own pit, and a bit o' human to nosh on. Yep. They don't make heros like that anymore.

V: I think we're done here …
M: Those little bastards tried to kill Charlie in the first book. But, you know the old saying, “it's hard to keep a good man down.”

V: Moving right along, thank you for visiting with us today, MAD.
M: (drool forming on her lips): Say. Is somebody cooking a roast?

V: (edging away): Uh, no. Well, until next time …
M: (stumbles out of her chair): I'm pretty sure I smell meat.

V: Go away!
M: Yup. That's meat, alright.

V: (pale, terrified): I thought we were friends?!
M: (grins wide, exposing a mouthful of pointed teeth): Uh huh. And that's why I'm gonna give you a pit of your own. You'll love it. Low overhead – get it? (zombie-styled giggle snort)

V: MAD! Don't do this! MAD …
M: You'll love Charlie. Salt of the earth, that guy …

Guest: Duchess de Borde

Duchess de Borde
Salutations to one and all. I am the Duchess de Borde.

I forever wear black thus causing tongues to wag as to whether or not I am in mourning or simply a mysterious personage. The truth is that black flatters my blonde hair and serves to conceal chocolate crumbs upon my gown.

I am allergic to insipid men and the number 12.

After witnessing what transpired *a-hem* between him and Lady Cee in the party scene post here, the Duchess de Borde is so bold as to approach the wickedly handsome Mr Wickham.

Would you dare converse with Mr Wickham if he turned an eye to you?

Would you dance with him even if you knew he would break your heart?

~~!~~!~~!~~
Bit o'sip sip gossip...

Did you know...

Caroline Bingley
A Continuation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice
by Jennifer Becton
visit Austenesque Reviews
for the giveaway here -ends Nov 25

When Charles Bingley and Mr. Darcy made proposals of marriage to the Bennet sisters at the end of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, Caroline Bingley was both distressed by her brother's choice of bride and humiliated by Mr. Darcy's rejection of her. And she made her objections known.

Now banished from her brother's household, Caroline must return to her mother's home in the north of England until she can make amends with both Bennet sisters. Desperate though Caroline may be to return to polite company, she absolutely refuses to apologize to Miss Elizabeth Bennet, and instead, she seeks an alternative route back into society in the form of Mr. William Charlton, heir to a barony.

Through her connections with Mr. Charlton's sister Lavinia, Caroline begins to infiltrate the household in the hopes of securing the gentleman and his title for herself. However, she must also contend with her vexing emotions regarding Mr. Patrick Rushton, a once-wealthy landowner, and the meddlesome opinions of Mrs. Rosemary Pickersgill, the companion sent by her brother.

When all that Caroline has ever dreamed of attaining--an ancient family name, a title, and a home of her own--is finally within her reach, will she grasp for it even if it means disregarding the workings of her own heart? Or will she cast off the trappings of society and give herself to true love?

... ok. That's it. I'm officially overwhelmed by all the awesome/yummy/drool-worthy book events/giveaways/tours going on this month.

I cannot live a productive adult life AND keep up with all the book love.

Something's gotta give :O

Books & Nails: Ashes by Ilsa J. Bick

Books & Nails

~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~

~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~

Ashes
by Ilsa J. Bick

It could happen tomorrow . . .

An electromagnetic pulse flashes across the sky, destroying every electronic device, wiping out every computerized system, and killing billions.

Alex hiked into the woods to say good-bye to her dead parents and her personal demons. Now desperate to find out what happened after the pulse crushes her to the ground, Alex meets up with Tom—a young soldier—and Ellie, a girl whose grandfather was killed by the EMP.

For this improvised family and the others who are spared, it’s now a question of who can be trusted and who is no longer human.

Author Ilsa J. Bick crafts a terrifying and thrilling novel about a world that could be ours at any moment, where those left standing must learn what it means not just to survive, but to live amidst the devastation.

~*~

MAD says:

So. Finished up Ashes last night, 2nd half of book is better and apparently sequel on the horizon, but it's primary focus seems to be on interpersonal relationship crap than on the nitty gritty survival zombie *Changed* folk stuff.

Anyway though, it IS good and I did like how the first book ended, despite all the touchy-feely stuff ;P

So of course I'd better get the sequel as soon as it comes up for grabs hahaha

Zombie update from: Illinois

~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~
by MAD of Mary Ann DeBorde Writes (and Reads!)
~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~

Folks always thought it'd be worse in the city.

But here, in the sticks, the farmbelt of America ... it's worse because we're trapped.

We don't have no reinforcements. We're trapped. STUCK.

Did you get that??? stuck as in we can't move.

I'm sending this from Mike's iphone. Just got a few bars left.

Oh, did I mention we're stuck?

There are seven of us squeezed into the crawlspace beneath the old farmhouse.

There's no room to move, to turn around. It's pitch dark and there's creepy crawly things sliding

all over my skin, trying to get in my hair. My mouth.

Feels like we're already in a coffin.

Which I guess is about right 'cept no one wants to admit it.

Outside there's a growing horde of the dead things trying to get at us.

The moaning and grinding has been going on since nightfall.

Did you know the zombies grind and gnash their teeth nonstop?

Sounds like bricks shattering.

For now, they can't get to us but we can't get out.

We're as good as dead here.

You can hear more of them rustling towards the farm from out in the fields.

Phone's beeping. 'Bout outta juice.

Please. Send.......

Roadside Attraction: Z-World

~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~
by Mary deBorde
~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~

Z-World (an excerpt)

The problem with having super rich parents is how it can lead you to acting super stupid.

My brother is not only my ultra wealthy parents spoiled first born and only son, he's also kind of a jerk.

He's been handed everything on a silver platter, so of course he's bored all of the time looking for cheap or dangerous thrills to spice up his otherwise pampered life.

So being a first class jack ass comes naturally to Beemer (can you believe someone was pretentious enough to name their kid after a car?). Btw, I can talk shit about him because I'm his sister.

My name is Brita, his 16 year old twin. I'm the smart one, usually. Almost always. Except for today.

Today I did something crazy stupid.

Because I'd just broke up with my boyfriend, I was in a morbid funk and didn't give a damn about anything. It seemed like my entire life was over so what did I have to lose?

Which is why I let Beemer talk me into taking a road trip to Z-World.

~*~

Okay, so here's the thing.

We all learned in school how the zombiepopcalypse was a near thing, at least until NG11 was finally perfected for use against the Zs without killing the living along with the dead. NG11, if you didn't already know or just crawled out from under a rock, stands for Nerve Gas formula #11. Anyway, like I said ... we learned how just when it seemed the living had no chance of surviving the Z Years - along comes the magic bullet, NG11, in the nick of time to turn the tide against the zombies.

And even though most of our parents were kids themselves when it happened, we've all seen the documentaries filmed during those brutal years. Especially the famous one where Elvis was torn apart live onstage in some place out west called Vegas. Beemer loves watching those old clips over and over again. He thinks they're rad.

I think they're disgusting, which just goes to show how messed up my head was when I let him talk me into driving out to Z-World today.

But anyway, back to the thing I was talking about:

See, while most people think all the zombies were destroyed decades ago ... they weren't. Not all of them.

A few enterprising, or unscrupulous entrepreneurs decided to hide some of the Zs away. God knows why anyone with any sense would want to do something so insane, but they did.

That's how Z-World came about. Even though it's illegal as hell, word gets around. Beemer says he knows a guy who knows another guy that said Z-World gives the local law a cut so they don't get busted. And while I don't usually believe half the crap my brother tells me, this has to be the truth because Z-World is right there in plain sight, on old Route 66 a few miles east outside Springfield.

They've set it up like a miniature cross between Jurassic Park and IHOP, no lie.

Every night during the summer months, right after sundown, Z-World opens for business. They do it like this because the Zs tend to hibernate during the winter, or anytime it's especially cold out. Also during the daylight hours they're too sluggish to seem like much of a threat - they'll only amble around in circles or lay slumped against the barbed wire fences.

And since people prefer the thrill of danger, no one's willing to pay a steep entry fee if the zombies aren't going to do their part. You know, with the moaning and groaning and gnashing of teeth & jaw kinda thing. Though I'm not sure if it's for real or only effect, but every 'tourist' has to sign a liability waiver to get into Z-World.

I signed mine Pauline Pureheart, though the skank taking our money was either too stupid or stoned to care.

Anyway, that's pretty much how I came to find myself strapped in an antique rust bucket of a rail car, reluctantly chugging my way down a winding track through the sleaziest amusement park in the history of mankind.

Get this. Every 1/2 mile or so there'd be a meat shack where you could press a button to stop your car if you wanted to get out to buy a raw beef pattie to throw to the Zs. It was like some eff'd up zoo with signs everywhere urging patrons to Feed the Z'animals and other snarky messages.

The whole thing was in really poor taste, so of course Beemer was having the time of his life. He kept hitting the stop button to jump out at all the meat shacks, laughing like a hyena everytime he managed to hit one of the Zs through the fences with a bloody pattie.

So this kind of clean, wholesome fun had been going on for maybe a couple of hours and I'd had enough. By now the entire park was getting creepy, - it was well past dark and there were only a handful of dim security lights set way up high on poles every couple hundred of yards. The mosquitos were bad, whining and buzzing around my face, biting my back through my thin blouse and constantly attacking my legs and ankles. Tomorrow I was going to be a swollen, lumpy mess which didn't exactly help with my 'looking good is the best revenge' plan I had in mind for dealing with the ex.

I started bugging Beemer to get us out of there, I wanted to go home. I wanted to get back to my safe MacMansion on the east side of Springfield, grab a long hot shower and then spend the rest of the night texting my friends as to what a loser my ex-boyfriend was. I wanted to sprawl out on 800 thread count hand combed Egyptian cotton sheets and try to put as much distance between my priviledged existence and the rest of the nasty, bloody world as possible.

Because if Beemer didn't get us out of Z-World PDQ, I was going to lose it. I really was. It didn't seem like there were many other rail cars out on the tracks, the park felt almost empty of life - well, living life like us, at least. Like I said, I was starting to get creeped out. Even though I'd seen genuine clips of real life zombies at school and on PcTv all my life, I'd never seen anything like this, not in the flesh, so to speak, and I didn't like the way they kept staring at us.

Even with a scabby mouth crammed full of raw bloody meat, the jaw rising and falling and gnashing until there was nothing left but pink pulp sliding past the lips, the eyes would follow me and Beemer until our car rounded the corner of every field and another hot spot of Zs jerked to attention.

Another thing. I'd always found the abandoned corn fields around Illinois a romantic reminder of how things used to be before I was born. The way the endless fields were given over to whatever volunteer strains managed to find a foothold and thrive for another season or two, without any interference from man. They just kept on producing, somehow, even if the stalks were sickly and the ears mostly deformed. The fields were a testimony, or so I thought, to the enduring strength of mother earth, of nature itself.

But by ten o'clock tonight, I'd seen all the nature I'd ever hoped to see, and then some. My romantic testimony had turned into a nightmare travesty. Hearing the dead shuffling between the shadowy stalks, the dead husks rustling under their feet, the straining grasping hands thrust greedily between the corn rows with their pale, ravenous faces lit by moonlight, or the meagre light afforded by the occasional security bulb half obscured by hundreds of moths beating drunkenly against the glass.

I looked over at Beemer to see if he felt the dread, too. Except he was pissed because the last two shacks we'd passed were empty. I started to point out we might as well cross over to the adjacent return track and get our ass home. If we were too late getting home there was always the chance we'd get grilled by one of the parents, and they'd flip the eff out if they knew where we'd been. Even 'I-can-do-no-wrong' Beemer would get majorly grounded for sneaking out to a sleazy place like Z-World.

However, before I could so much as get the first syllable out, the world suddenly exploded around us.

... to be continued

Aliens: Campfire

A L I E N S

Nightfall has come and Alice has walked to the edge of the woods.

She has come to a sandy beach. The outskirts of Wereland.

Up ahead is a blazing campfire. She can see a person, mayhaps a werePerson, with a tin foil hat bustling around.

Alice walks towards the fire and sees a wereRat sitting on driftwood with a mug in hand.

A wereSnake is napping at the edge of the fire with a steaming mug sitting nearby.

And a wereHare approaches Alice with a fresh mug of... looks like cocoa.

Greetings - schmeetings. Care to join us for a cuppa cocoa - schmocoa?

But you must pay the admission fee, says wereRat.

Yes, admission fee required - reschmired. Indeed, indeed, says wereHare.

What is the fee? Alice asks.

A tale, answers wereRat.

A tail? asks Alice.

A tale - schmale, says wereHare.

I don't quite understand. I don't own a tail says Alice in dismay.

A tale as in sssssssssssstory, pipes up wereSnake who has been awaken from all the chit chat chatting.

A tale of the alien kind for tonight is ALIEN night, says wereRat.

Yessum, it dudn't have ta be of the epic kind or fancy like, says wereCrab who was hidden behind wereSnake's mug.

Quite right - schmight. We had ghost stories last night, says wereHare.

The werePerson in the tin foil hat continues to bustle and hustle and tustle about while jib jab jabbing to herself.

Don't mind her, says wereRat, She's MAD.

Mad? as in looney? asks Alice.

Nope - schmope. Her name's MAD, answers wereHare.

OKAY, I'll give you an alien tale. But you all need to go first, Alice announces.

WereRat claps in excitement and wereCrab snaps his claws too.

WereHare finally hands Alice the mug of cocoa but first adds marshmallows on top.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Then MAD stands stock still.

Everyone turns to her.

And she begins to speak all trance-like...

"This here be Bubba. Now, I knows you folks been worryin' and wringin' yer hands 'bout them leetle bug-eyed critters flyin' round all over t'place like saucers on steroids, they be.

It were be honest o' me t'admit that I been worried sumthin fierce, too. It be hard e-nuff to keep Six-Toes-Ted's beer cans picked up out o' my yard cos he is the laziest son of a gun I ever did see an' won't pick up after his self no matter if I threaten to tell Maybelle 'bout that time he been flirtin' with that yung gal down at the Dollar Barn like he ain't been married no dang twenty year to the best leetle woman who can bake a biskit like nobody I ever did seen.

Now I gots t' worry bout them aliens an' theys fancy schamncy flyin' saucers they parade round in tearin' up my sheet metal an' I just got the dents hammered out last month after that bad hailstorm we done had...

Mary's title: Baby Had Back

I like big meals and I cannot lie
You other zombies can't deny
When a victim walks by with an itty bitty waist
In front of your rotting face
You get hungry!
Wanna pull out a fork
Cause you notice that butt's like pork
A meal in the jean's she's rulin'
I'm hooked and I can't stop droolin'
Oh baby, I wanna bite into ya
And taste your tibia
The living tried to warn me
But that butt you got makes me so hungry!
Ooh rump of din-din
You say you don't wanna lose your skin
Well scream....and run...
Cause you ain't that average dim sum
Don't need Budweiser,
To hell with appetizers
She's meaty and thick
Got it goin' like a sirloin steak
I'm tired of Rachel Ray
Sayin' pasta makes your day
Take the average zombie and ask him that
She gotta pack a rack (of ribs)
So..zombies (yeah!) zombies (yeah!)
Has your victim got the butt?
Just eat it (eat it!) eat it (eat it)
Eat that human butt....
Baby had back

Zombies Discover Fire

PROLOGUE:
[Note: The following missive, translated from the original Russian, was recently recovered among singed rubbish removed from the 33rd floor of the Hotel New Yorker, lodgings once occupied in the final years of Nikola Tesla - world reknowned inventor.

The historic residence, room 3327 inclusive, was partially destroyed by a fire of unknown origin, arson under investigation.

The editor of this newspaper expresses regret that Tesla's document suffered significant damage, allowing for only brief fragments reprinted, as does follow below:]

Jan. 12th, 1939
... success at last! Good God, have I the courage to proceed? I have been called many things - genius, madman, inventor. But this? Will the great Nikola be deified or defiled? I give a whit less, for everything within me calls my attention to this matter.

Proceed I must. Ah, Nikola, what shall the future say of the past?

................. the pinnacle of science. The ultimate time-machine .... dozens of these devices, small enough to fit in the hollow of a monkey's paw, and scatter them across the African Savanna.

No, nyet! I could just as well travel to the future and leave a trail ....[followed by multiple paragraphs too damaged for translation: Ed.]

[document resumed:Ed.] The die is cast, I have dared the unthinkable. I have left a total of 100 dozen miniaturized wave-skips across a span of no less than 5,000 centuries. If I am correct in my surmise, one of two probabilities must occur:

A) The past will influence the future and vice versa, nullifying the seeming cause and effective nature of sequential events experienced as linear time. All human experience will manifest as a singular 'now'.

OR

B) God, if indeed such exists, will be forced to show His hand to correct my subversion of His Perfect Plan. Thus, I will have proved conclusively the existence of a Supreme Creative Force.

It would be prudent to this, my Great experiment and Contribution to the moral attribution of mankind, were I to sequester these notes until that point in time that probability A or B, whichever of the two should manifest, establishes ... [end of legible document: Ed.]

C235,000 B.C.
Homo erectus, as well as a handful of other transitional primate species, was in the process of dying out. The plains of Africa no longer were the verdant paradise which had once birthed the rising star of the primate genus to flourish unabated and with celestial rapidity unsurpassed since the Mesozoic era.

Neanderthal was stricken as well, along with his straggling cro magnon cousin.

Hunger became a daily pestilence, and many were the dead gathered in groups, bloated and fly-covered masses, in a final huddle beneath the scorching sun where grasses and game had ceased to thrive.

Those with the strength left to walk, ventured out of the dying trees and became nomads across the face of the dark continent.

3088 A.D.

JonVori5 knew he was sick. JonVori5 also knew that unless a miracle occurred within the next five minutes, his fluctuating heat-signature would expose him to the WorldHealthPolice where he would be apprehended, impounded, and, ultimately, disposed of.

The Good of the Many and all that propaganda. Betelgeuse balls!

JonVori5, hearing the whine of a fast-approaching WHP air jail, ducked into an alley and slumped beside one of the city trash incinerators. He was done. There was nowhere left to run. Eyes closed, he briefly muttered a small recite to the Higgs-Boson particle, not sure, even in these final moments of freedom, if such a Perfect Creation existed to hear him or even care.

JonVori5 felt something small and quite firm hit him on the head. The object bounced once and landed center in his questing left hand. Automatically, without thinking, he pressed the round crystal center of the object.

It began to glow.

C236,000 B.C.
Roughly 240,000 years in the past, Ori wasn't feeling too swift either. He lifted a thick, short-fingered hand and cupped his brow, watching in sorrow as the remainder of his dwindling tribe left him dying in the dust while they searched the distant plain for foodstuff.

His belly hurt. It protruded like one of the females with young, and it ached like fire ants had made a mound inside it.

This was hunger. Ori knew he needed to eat or he would die. But there was nothing left to eat. What plants had managed to survive the endless drought had long since been rooted out. And along with the green growing things, so had gone the herbivores and with them, the carnivores quickly followed.

There was nothing left but dirt.

Ori collapsed to his knees and scratched a hoary nail across the brittle ground. He squinted one eye and looked at the dirt. He imagined the dirt looked back at him. Out of curiosity, or delirium, or primitive sense of humor, Ori lifted a few granules and placed them on his tongue.

The result was precisely as he'd expected. Dirt tasted like dirt.

Ori shut his eyes in disgusted surrender.

C236,000 & 1 minute later B.C.
JonVori5 felt his bones turn to jello, then water, then air and then something less than air, all in a single Plank's length or 1.616252(81) X 10 to the -35 meters. In other words - mighty damn fast.

For a moment, JonVori5 fought the urge to upchuck. Then the vertigo passed and JonVori5's surroundings solidified just about the time his body started feeling more like a body again and less like something poured through a sieve.

By Jupiter! He seemed to be in a vast wasteland under a brilliant Sol. And there, not three feet away, was stretched out the prone form of some type of man creature.

Puzzled, JonVori5 reached in his striped, WHP hospital-grade sicksuit and extracted a contraband pack of cigarettes. With a flick of a techno-Bic, he had one lit and took a deep drag, exhaling through nostrils eager to eradicate the unpleasantly heady odor eminating from ... whatever that creature was.

JonVori5 was not a seasoned smoker. He coughed.

C236,000 & counting B.C.
Ori heard a cough from somewhere to his right. He opened both eyes and beheld the strangest animal he had ever seen. Like one of the striped-hoofed ones, this one however stood on two legs. Frail, slender, long of fine white hair and with stripes that ran across instead of up & down. It appeared to be staring at him. With a flaming stick in it's mouth.

Ori couldn't believe his luck! The Gods had seen fit to send him a striped-hoof ... though a deformed one of unusual habits, it seemed ... on which to assuage his hunger.

He was saved.

Stumbling to his feet, sweat pouring from his heavy brow, he bared his teeth in anticipation and lurched quickly towards the striped-hoof.

C236,000 & still counting B.C.
It was to JonVori5's disadvantage that he had no previous experience with time traveling, starvation, or primitive man. Having been reared in a future time where brains triumphed over brawn, where man's physical attributes atrophied in direct proportion to his technical prowess and - more importantly - where the greatest enemies were too small to be seen - biological weapons & viral aberrations being a constant hazard of life in 3088 A.D. ...

Thus having all the above working against him, JonVori5 was a few crucial seconds too late in recognizing the glaze of hungry intention in Ori's face. To be exact, JonVori5's neck already broken and his flesh torn by the time he understood what the short, stocky primitive was about.

His cigarette and lighter dropped to the ground, no longer of much consequence.

Yet either by reflex, or deliberation, JonVori5 depressed one last time the liquid crystal in the strange object still clenched in his other fist. As his form quickly dematerialized to appear somewhere on the streets of America in the year 1775, the damage was already done.

Both to Ori, himself, and all those who would come before, during or after.

The hungry homo erectus, mouth smeared with blood, with an aggressive viral disease courtesy of the future already coursing through his veins, and feeling very, very disappointed to lose his meal so soon, sadly groped the ground where JonVori5 had vanished. His meaty hand closed around the techno-Bic.

Hours later, a few of the more compassionate members of Ori's tribe returned to check on him. They were understandably surprised to discover that not only was Ori not yet dead, but that he was displaying a rather puzzling degree of robust health and unwarranted aggression.

In a word, he ate them.

Days later, the *futuristic blood infection* had spread far and wide. For amusement, when there was nobody around to eat, the primitive zombies would play with JonVori5's Bic.

Eventually they got the idea.

Early zombies discovered fire.

Which gave them a distinct advantage over all the other non-infected primitives.

And things weren't MUCH better in 1775 after the abrupt arrival of JonVori5's diseased & broken body in the midst of the Great Battle of Lexington - antibiotics, anti-bacterial gel, or even those flimsy sanitary hand wipes passed out at cheap seafood restaurants having as yet to be invented.

Furthermore, Tesla's damn time machines - those little wave skip gadgets that looked so much like a child's toy - were popping up all over the Great Time Continuum like mushrooms in the Spring. It wasn't too long before God's Perfect Plan had morphed into a Gawd-Awful Perfect Mess.

EPILOGUE:
Bemused, God watched Earth for a while before turning His attention back to the massive ranks of dazzling white unicorns waiting in the distance.

"There you have it," He said. "Now all across 'time', the whole lot's been infected".

God shook His magnificent shock of hair and ran a hand through His beard, pensive.

The unicorns rolled huge eyes at one another. Tension spread through the herd like fire. A few of the more agitated whinnied in protest.

"Right then". God pointed at each and every unicorn in turn. "All of you get down there. Split up the centuries evenly, I don't want any patchy eras left to flourish. And don't be seen if you can help it!"

Powerful hooves shook the heavens, horns long and powerful pierced the shimmering ether as the celestial herd readied itself for war.

"No dallying with the virgins, either!" God hollered after them as an afterthought.

A wave of glorious beasts vaulted over the edge of a lake of silvery mist to be lost to sight in the thickening of that nebulous thing called Time.

With a sigh redolent of long-suffering, God slowly settled His golden-glowing form into the depths of a rather comfortable looking throne. He silently motioned to a still, shame-faced figure hovering uncertainly to his left.

God arched a holy brow and gently patted the cloud in front of Him, "Mr. Tesla, does the expression FUBAR mean anything to you?"

SteamPink: Private car - Leggs

As Professor Eva McGregor reveals each of her latest steampunky gadgets, gizmos, thingamajigs, thingamabobs, doohickies, widgets, and doodads with much explanation per...

Lulled to drowsy reverie by the soothing rhythm of the Denovian Express, an Arachnidus Mechanicus named Leggs mulled the strange workings of fate which had led to his position as a PET (of all useless things!) ... sequestered and sedated in the depths of a certain reticule belonging to a specific human named Mary Ann.

'Ah, what a tangled web life hath spun,' mused the spider.

He had come a long way from a dusty lab operated by that unsung genius, Nikola Tesla. The Tesla Coil was but one in a long string of inventions that the team of Leggs & Nikola had produced, though much credit had gone to Edison in the end - unsurprising given the public's queer distaste for spiders (be they organic or mechanical).

Wealth, along with fame, were rewards alone destined for humans, so it seemed.

Leggs sniffed around the bit of tasty sandwich carefully wrapped and tucked away inside Mary Ann's reticule, deciding a bite of olive might be just the thing to erase the taste of bitterness on his palate.

One could not help overhearing the Society girls as they discussed the duplicitous doings of the MAPS agents. Leggs was reminded of the time he had assisted Sherlock Holmes on the case of the Hound of the Baskervilles. Things were not always as they seemed, even if one could never quite get that truism through the thick skull of the bumbling Dr. John Watson - the oaf! Thanks to the good doctor's annoying antics on the heath, Leggs had sustained a rather nasty injury still felt during inclement weather.

Swallowing a particle of pecan, the spider mused that Holmes had half-hoped to see Watson eaten alive - moustache and all. Well, there was always next time ...

Leggs carefully pushed aside a copper rivet on the aft side of his owner's reticule. Swiftly, silently, he pushed a spectratomic telescope through the narrow aperture.

Splendid, all seemed well enough. He admired the lovely Apollo knot of Velvet's hair. Mary Ann sported a stunning brooch that, unless his eight compound eyes failed him, could have come from nowhere other than the famous House of Worth. And there ... on the seat beside Freda ... rested the most amazing birdcage complete with miniature calliope and adorned with whorls of rare Chinese Jadite in the shape of modern dragons.

Leggs recalled the first time he had spied a dragon; he and the eccentric Phileas Fogg had encountered not one, but THREE of the shy species on their aerial trip around the world. No matter the wager placed by the Reform Club, Fogg would have made the trip in 75.5 revolutions (not 80!), had they not undertaken the tender task of playing midwife to an expectant dragon. Who would have ever guessed that dragons (the non-egg laying variety) took a walloping 4.5 days to birth? Then again, those wings had to be blastedly difficult to ... pass?

He shuddered, pushed the rivet back in place, and blessed his maker for assigning him the male gender. It made his appreciation for the Latrodectus Mechanicus (black widow) that much keener. Keener, but Leggs was enough of a Bon Ton to know to avoid pillow talk with any female who sported an hourglass on her abdomen. Some prices he simply wasn't willing to pay.

Someone who had paid, and dearly as it were - was his oldest comrade and companion to the literary arts, Edgar Allen Poe. They had met at West Point Academy where Poe was to later be dismissed, which really has no bearing on anything except that Poe often carried an unhealthy chip on his shoulder for both women (named Lenore in specific!) and Academia in general. Legg's chuckled to remember the evening Poe had pounded on his door, thoroughly in his cups from a surfeit of Absinthe, and demanded Leggs pose for him as a replacement for the Raven (which never would have worked due to unsatisfactory poetic metre). Sadly, it wasn't too long afterwards that Poe subsided into a bleak period fraught with macabre notions of premature burial and an incurable drive for opium. Leggs, virtually a teetotaller, had bade farewell to the greatest, and perhaps unluckiest, poet ever known.

Unlike dear Poe, West Point had proven advantageous for the mechanical spider. Through contacts he had acquired there, Leggs had gone on to open the first European charter of MENSA (Mechanically ENgineered Superior Arachnids). It was still boasted at the club that Leggs had an almost unheard of IQ of 201, although the truth of the matter was more like 187.

Leggs was modest, if not brilliant.

Rooting around in the bottom-most folds of Mary Ann's reticule, Leggs uncovered a breath mint, two hairpins and an empty bottle of patent quack medicine. Leggs crawled inside the tiny cobalt-blue glass bottle and set to spinning himself a wee hammock in which to catch a few winks. Really, the girls seemed fine and the rocking of the train had induced in Leggs an overwhelming urge for slumber.

Comfortably ensconced in his make-shift cradle, swaying back and forth in a movement as much internally generated as external, the miniature mechanical spider peered dimly through the murky haze of blue glass and was reminded of another blue that had once held him as gently captive as his web ...

Mary Shelley, (how ironic Leggs must find these Marys in his life)! Mary Shelley - wife to Percy, clandestine amore to both Leggs and Byron - an angel amongst men! It was she who first brought his, Legg's, story to pen & paper, although much disguised and fictionalized under the title of Frankenstein. It was Mary who had broken him with her refusal to abandon the wastrel waste named Percy Bysshe Shelley and flee Geneva with Leggs at her side. It was Mary who, under countless excuses of the vapours, had hunted zombies with Leggs under the London sewers.

And finally, it was also Mary who had sent Leggs on that fateful night to meet up with the man who would sell the then-young mechanical spider into ten long years of servitude with the French Foreign Legion. 'Amarante a fleurs en queue' ... love lies bleeding, so she once said.

And now, as eight diodes delicately dimmed in repose, the 98 yr. old mechanicus arachnidus named Leggs surrendered to the waiting arms of Morpheus. Later, when much refreshed, he would stand vigilant vanguard with his Society Girls in the never-ending battle between the forces of (proper) Society and those maleficent miscreants, MAPS.

The tiny spider belched a bit of pimento, then began to softly snore.
