On my only Winter's vacation in recent years, I was in Venice. I can guarantee you it is not a good place to be in cold time. The water makes it very very cold, bad weather makes the boats go side-to-side and there are floods! So, as you see, every great place has it's problems! Hang in there, beauty comes right after a little "suffering"!

TO: vivi
FR: Audra
Greetings from Ephesus, Turkey! Not as cold as Rome was, but not warm enough for shorts (not even Cairo was that warm), but finally, sunny! Ephesus was one of the largest cities during the Roman Empire and the ruins excavated are in pristine condition -- makes it easy to envision what a typical Roman city looked like. Being back in Rome, I'd give anything to be back in Turkey! xx - audra

Winter Getaway: letter from A.Y.

oops, i accidentally
opened this letter...
-vivi

TO: vvb
FR: A.Y.

~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~
by A.Y. Stratton
~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~

My yearning to travel began when I was young. Or maybe it was genetic. My father loved to talk about foreign lands with exotic names: Basra, Bagdad, Shanghai, Cairo, places where battles were fought, people were enslaved, gold was discovered and ancient artifacts were hidden, waiting for the next adventurer to mine them.

Many nights instead of reading to my brother and me, Dad would make up his own series of adventures. The “Cloud Car,” a puff of whiteness with a face, drifted to our bedroom windows to give us a ride to a distant land. The stories always ended the same way. We’d wake up in our own beds with a souvenir from Morocco or Alaska, Hong Kong or Paris.

It’s not surprising that the first time I got to see some ancient ruins, I fell in love. My husband and I and our kids were visiting my brother and his family in London. Near the ancient gate of the city, I gazed at the Roman ruins and knew I had to see more, lots more.

Italy, Greece, Turkey—did I mention how much my father loved telling stories set in Istanbul? We visited many ruins, so many I decided I needed to learn more about the science and history of archaeology.

Soon I was collecting information on Mayan ruins that lay hidden for centuries. I finally persuaded my husband to go on an archaeological tour along the Ruta de Maya, the path of the Mayans.

Surrounded by the expansive archeological site of Copan, in Honduras, we stood at the foot of the famous staircase, while an attractive young archeologist/guide described its reconstruction, and happened to mention the “books” the Mayans produced.

They had books? I hadn’t known that. The archaeologist explained the Maya recorded their scientific and historic data by drawing hieroglyphs on paper made from tree bark, folded like an accordion to form a book, a codex.

The archaeologist added one more tidbit: in the 16th Century most of the codices were burned by the Spanish Conquistadores, as the Inquisition had ordered.

I was struck by the loss of knowledge and culture. Think what the discovery of just one codex might do for the history of a mighty civilization.

Our archeologist then said the words that gave me the idea for my book: a few of the codices survived, because they had been carried back to Europe as souvenirs and rediscovered in the 19th Century.

My imagination took over. I thought what if there was one more codex hidden deep in the Mexican rain forest? What if there was a map indicating its hiding place? And what if a handsome Mexican-American archeologist inherited that map, and bad guys try to steal it? What if a feisty, independent woman met the archeologist and became entangled by passion and intrigue?

And what, I finally wondered, if A. Y. Stratton wrote that story and got it published?

The Gorgeous Game
by Donna Freitas

Published: 2010
Genre: YA
Paperback: 224 pages
Rating: 4

Description from the amazon:
A CHILLING NOVEL ABOUT THE ISOLATION OF BEING STALKED AND THE ABUSE OF POWER.

Olivia Peters is over the moon when her literary idol, the celebrated novelist and muchadored local priest Mark D. Brendan, offers to become her personal writing mentor. But when Father Mark’s enthusiasm for Olivia’s prose develops into something more, Olivia’s emotions quickly shift from wonder to confusion to despair. Exactly what game is Father Mark playing, and how on earth can she get out of it?

This remarkable novel about overcoming the isolation that stems from victimization is powerful, luminous, and impossible to put down.

Buried Heart by A.Y. Stratton

Buried Heart
by A.Y. Stratton

Published: 2009
Genre: Romance
Paperback: 312 pages
Rating: 4

Description from the amazon:
Public relations expert Lauren Richmond believes her family has been jinxed in the love department. To avoid the chaos she suffered as a child, she has built a grammatically-perfect, passion-free life, which crumbles shortly after she rescues a man from muggers.

The victim, Luis Hernandez, is an archeology professor on a quest to locate an ancient Mayan document that survived the Spanish Inquisition. Convinced that the Codex exists, Luis is determined to protect his ancestors' priceless artifacts.

When strangers ransack Luis's home and office and then threaten Lauren, sweet and seductive Luis insists the mysterious map he inherited from his grandfather has nothing to do with the incidents.

Deep in the Mexican rain forest at a Mayan dig site, Luis and Lauren must outsmart ruthless grave robbers and battle phantoms from their past to rescue a treasure that could destroy their love.

Amusing quotes:
"Each discovery has the potential to prove the intelligence, the power, and the brilliance of the Mayan heritage. That's what I'm after."
- says Luis, page 39, chapter 3

How did we get on the floor and how long have we been here?" she asked.
- says Lauren, page 46, chapter 4

Luxor is hotter than you said, and in more ways than one, ha.

If Jordan would ever leave the DOGs, I could see us living here. It's drier than your jokes, and the air is clean enough to breathe.

Get this -- they LOVE exotics here! I've seen five besides me in just three days.

Don't hyperventilate.

You know Jordan will never leave his precious cause ... and the truth is, I could never leave the Space Junque.

I love you, my brother.

I'll see you soon.

Pick me up at Vacation Station.

TO: Velvet
FR: Julie

~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~
by Dee DeTarsio
~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~

Postcard greeting from Julie Fraser, star of The Scent of Jade, who’s lost in the Costa Rican jungle...

Dear Velvet,

Did you know it’s impossible to frown when the sun is in your eyes? I gave it my best shot. Tears were streaming down my face, not because I’m a crybaby, (though we both know I am) but because my fancy-schmancy mineral makeup was melting kosher salt-sized boulders of misery, that blinking only made worse.

Through the ecru matte-finish drizzle dripping from my eyelashes, I could make out a bamboo hut, dead ahead. I stepped underneath the fringe of palm fronds into a welcoming waft of shadows. A young woman sat behind a bar, as music played in the background. I could have kissed her! My sunburnt face cracked a smile, as I called out my one and only Spanish word: “Hola!”

She hopped off her stool, swishing her long brown hair and shot off what sounded like a staccato of accusations. Bubbles oozed through the dried sweat stains on my arms; I felt as deep fried as a glazed Krispy Kreme. I took a breath, wishing I was sipping on gin and juice. Coconut rum and pineapple slices so yellow I knew they would crunch like cartoon food, danced in my sinuses; an atomizer of ocean spray spritzed my hair. I was in hell, in paradise.

“I’m lost,” I told her.

She flung up her hands and shook her head. My “Do you have a phone?” earned shoulder shrugs and more hh-llatina hh-lingo that would come in handy if one had a chest cold.

She was wearing a turquoise bikini top (and wearing it well, I might add) with jean shorty shorts that I couldn’t even pull off when I was four years old.

The time for a meltdown had set sail with a cargo full of my tears. If I had a nickel for every grain of sand in my stilettos I would have swapped them for an English translation app faster than you could say whipped cream. We might as well have been from different planets. I bowed my head.

The music got louder. I saw her throw her arms up in the air and begin to hula.

“California girls, we’re unforgettable!” She sang along, nodding at me.

“Daisy dukes, bikinis on top?” I answered.

She clapped her hands and shook what appeared to be her groove thang.

“Sun-kissed skin so hot we’ll melt your Popsicle,” I joined in, our voices crystal clear in a harmony we made our own. Next thing I knew, she was beside me and we rode imaginary ponies, spanked ourselves and spun around in complete synchronicity. You’d have thought we were on Glee.

“Oh Oh Oh Oh Ohhhhhhh!”

Wish you were here... and hope sex...on the beach is stuck in your head for the rest of the day!

Love,
Julie

Evie's Gift by PJ Schnyder

Evie's Gift
by PJ Schnyder

Published: 2010
Genre: Romance, Steampunk
ebook
Rating: 5

Imagery quote to note:
A veritable sea os swishing skirts filled the dance floor.
- page 26, chapter 3

Description from the amazon:
Stubborn Evie is reluctant to play the roll of a proper lady by English standards, but she has little choice. Traveling to London for her first season, she faces the threat of an enemy submarine bent on destroying the airship carrying her across the ocean. Once she steps forward to help, her knowledge is questioned by the captain, placing her special gift in danger.

As a woman whose passion pushes her toward engineering and mechanical designs, her curious nature risks exposing her uncanny talents. Will this Christmas season allow her to keep her secrets? Or will her gift be revealed too soon?

My two-bits:
In-a-word(s): mechanicals
Loved this read set during the Christmas holiday season in a steampunk world.

The fun tidbit about this read is the connection the protagonist has with mechanicals and metals.

Is that a hairpiece, no wait it's a brooch, or is it a mechanical squirrel???
