Genre: Jane Austen, Short Stories
Paperback: 252 pages
In Jane Austen's beloved classic, Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet's relationship with the wealthy Fitzwilliam Darcy suffers misunderstanding, heated argument, and family interference on the way to love. Darcy's opinionated aunt, Lady Catherine, demands that Elizabeth give up Darcy, and calls Elizabeth headstrong for failing to keep to her lower social sphere.
Elizabeth is headstrong -- determined, stubborn, fiery, strong-willed, adventurous, yet sensitive to others. This is what readers love about her and what inspires the creation of this book.
Headstrong Girls has seven short stories and a short film script: Who is in the secret passage at Pemberley? Did Lizzy Bennet commit murder? What is mailroom-clerk Lizzy hiding from CEO Darcy? Who is creating havoc on a South African wildlife preserve?
With a little mystery and a little romance, across the Regency, fantasy, and modern genres, the book takes Jane Austen's characters to wonderful new adventures. May headstrong girls find their hearts' desire!

After the delicious ices have been properly enjoyed, we take our seats to listen to another special guest author reading...

Thank you for inviting us for Tea at Pemberley!
Our book, Headstrong Girls, is a collection of short stories written by Debra Anne Watson, June Williams, and Enid Wilson. The stories are all inspired by our favorite headstrong girl, Lizzy Bennet. The following outtake is from “No Cupid Contract,” a modern short story by June Williams in which Lizzy is a mailroom clerk at Pemberley Holdings.
Mrs. Long was petrified with fear. She had never had a one-on-one meeting with Mr. Darcy, and now he’d asked her for a “personal” meeting at a coffeeshop. It didn’t sound like he was going to fire her, but why did Pemberley’s CEO want to meet her? She was just a lowly clerk at Pemberley.
She got off the bus stop in front of the coffeeshop and was surprised when Mr. Darcy himself hurried to the door to open it for her.
“Am I late? I’m sorry, I’m limited to the bus driver’s schedule.”
“Please don’t apologize, Mrs. Long. I should have asked if you needed a ride.”
They sat at a table. He’d arrived earlier and had ordered several cookies and sandwiches, but she was too nervous to eat.
“Mr. Darcy, am I in trouble?”
“No! You’re not in trouble at all. I just wanted to talk with you – on a personal level – about what happened yesterday at our childcare facility.”
“When Lizzy Bennet’s ex tried to kidnap her son, Stephen?”
He nodded, looking uncomfortable.
“I wish Lizzy were here. She always knew how to set people at ease. She is a wonderful asset to Pemberley.”
“I agree.” He missed Miss Bennet but understood why she and the baby were now in hiding. He took a deep breath. “Mrs. Long, what you did yesterday was absolutely heroic and brilliant. You prevented a kidnapping, at personal risk to your own safety.”
“I couldn’t stand by and do nothing. Lizzy is my friend, she loves her baby, and she has given me help whenever possible.”
“I’m learning more each day about what a fine person she is – and what excellent people we have here at Pemberley. It’s time I begin acknowledging that, but we don’t have a program for this type of employee recognition.”
Mrs. Long thought about it. “No, I don’t suppose this falls into any standard category for employee behaviour.”
“What I’d like to do is to give you something on a personal basis – not from Pemberley, but from me, as a fellow friend of Miss Bennet’s. Would that be acceptable to you? It means you wouldn’t have to pay taxes on it.”
She was startled. “Oh. Oh, yes, that would be nice. A small gift card from a store or something?”
Darcy chuckled, then handed her a gasoline card.
“I don’t have a car.”
“You do now.” He stood and led her outside to the curb, where a new mini-van was parked. He handed her the keys. “You and your four nieces and nephews will fit, I believe.”
She was speechless, unable to speak for several seconds. "I don't deserve this."
“Mrs. Long, you should be proud of your role in stopping a criminal from getting Miss Bennet’s baby.”
“Criminal? Lizzy said he was her ex.”
“Let me correct myself: a suspected criminal, who is now on the road to justice.”
“Criminal?” Mrs. Long repeated in a squeaky whisper. “I got into a shoving match with a criminal? I feel faint.”
Darcy hurried her inside the coffeeshop, where they still had their drinks and refreshments waiting; the diminutive widow was in shock.
I wonder how Mrs. Long will feel when I tell her that the man she fought with – George Wickham – may be charged with first degree murder, Darcy mused.
To find out if George Wickham gets convicted of first degree murder, you’ll have to read “No Cupid Contract” in Headstrong Girls, available at Amazon.com, Smashwords.com, and Lulu.com.

Quantum Leap with Mr. Darcy from Enid Wilson
by Enid Wilson
~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~
Excerpt from: Honor and Integrity: A Collection of Pride and Prejudice-Inspired Short Stories
by Aimee Avery, June Williams, Enid Wilson
“Come, Elizabeth Bennet, I have 98.6945% of yearning to show you my birth chamber.” Wickham grinned as he pulled Elizabeth along some unknown corridors in Pemberley Corporation.
“Wait, George, you’re going too fast! And what are you talking about? Birth chamber?” Elizabeth shook her head at the enthusiasm of the strange, handsome man. She had worked at Pemberley Corporation for the past two months as a public relations Vice President. The job put her in daily contact with Darcy and Bingley. She didn’t like the overbearing and arrogant Mr. Darcy one iota. He stared at her all the time, to find fault most probably, and kept trying to separate the charming George from her. Wickham might have strange vocabulary and manner, but he was polite, gentlemanly and had the hots for her, the exact opposite of Mr. Darcy’s treatment of her. She teased her CEO verbally whenever she had the chance, which seemed to be a lot of time, as Bingley was dating Jane, and they usually invited Darcy and her to tag along.
“There!” George stretched out his hand, gesturing to Elizabeth to admire the magnificent setup in front of their eyes.
Elizabeth’s mouth gaped open. Inside the room was an enormous circular structure, the size of a football field and height of 7-storey building, resembling the interior of a spaceship from a science-fiction movie, with countless computers, electronic devices and monitors. While the machines blinked and processed data busily, the room was devoid of occupants.
She stepped outside the corridor to make sure it wasn't her imagination. No, it was real: from the Pemberley Corporation corridor, this was just an ordinary room, but once she stepped through the door, it was a huge structure. Lizzy was reminded of a British television show about an alien who traveled inside a police call box that was really a spaceship.
“What is this place?” She cranked her head, trying to read the nonsensical content on the wall-to-ceiling computers as she moved into the room.
“You enquired about my birthplace yesterday.” George brushed an unruly curl from his forehead in front of a monitor and said, “This is the Quantum Chamber, where Joshua Wick and Robert Hamm, what did you call them, yes, my parents procreated me.”
Elizabeth whirled around to stare at George, from a distance. While her feet had taken her deep into the chamber, George was still stationed by the door. “You meant your parents conceived you here? But that can’t be true! Pemberley Corporation only moved here two months ago. And Joshua and Robert couldn’t conceive you. They are men. Did you mean they adopted you?”
“I’m an honourable man! I tell the absolute truth. My parents worked for Darcy.”
“I know that.”
“I was procreated from a minute small portion of Darcy's tissue using quantum acceleration inside the crystal palace in Derbyshire in 1821.”
“Crystal palace?”
George turned to press a few buttons on the wall by the door, and the banks of computers on Elizabeth’s right hand side parted open to reveal an inner chamber with a sparkling pagoda-shaped structure, larger than her entire house, in crystals. A high-back reclining chair, fit for a king, also made in eye-blinding crystals, occupied the center of the pagoda.
A palace inside a chamber? Did Mr. Darcy name them? Strange choice, she thought.
With mouth gaped open again and feet seemingly moved by magnets, Elizabeth walked inside the crystal palace. She had never seen so many crystals in her life, and every one of them looked to be perfection under the spot lights. Tracing her fingertips along the surface of the wall, she thought about what George had just said.
Did he mean he was not human? He was apparently created by G.E.O.R.G.E., the Genetically Engineered Organic Robot Growth experiment her father spoke a lot about. Darcy in 1821? From Derbyshire? Did George mean Mr. Darcy was a man from nineteenth century England who funded G.E.O.R.G.E. and time travel? That couldn’t be true. Elizabeth was speechless, and sat heavily onto the chair.
“No!” Darcy’s high-pitched voice startled her. He charged towards her like a raging bull. Elizabeth swirled the chair to avoid the flying man, but he knocked the breath out of her. She felt dizzy and in great pain. What had Mr. Darcy done to her? Did he kill her with his sheer masculine weight because she had discovered his crystal palace? She could feel his virile body pressed hard against her. Her eyes flashed with sparks, but she saw nothing. Her body felt like it was splitting up, disintegrating into millions of particles, yet she could feel every inch of Mr. Darcy’s skin in her mind. After what felt like hours or days, the faintness stopped.
“This shouldn’t be happening.”
Mr. Darcy’s husky voice made Elizabeth pry open her eyes. They were nose to nose. His mouth was inches from hers. Their bodies were pressed together, with her lying on top of him. He was holding on to her for dear life.
“This can’t be happening,” he murmured.
She scrambled off his body and fell to the ground. The unfeeling man with no manners left her there and walked out of the crystal palace and stood in front of some computers.
“Computer, how did Elizabeth travel through time, intact, without pre-programming?”
She stood up, followed him and looked around. Was he crazy too? And where was George? The other man was no longer in the Quantum Chamber, unless he was hidden somewhere behind those banks of computers and high-tech pieces of equipment.
A mechanical voice spoke out. “Mr. Darcy, your feelings will not be repressed, despite your concern of the inferiority of Miss Bennet’s connections and total want of propriety of her family. You love and admire her ardently. You plan to ask her to become your wife today. Your constant thoughts of Miss Bennet and regular body contact with her in the last 59 days 8 hours 39 minutes 11 seconds means that the time travel program recognizes a majority of her genetic makeup that you specified in 1821. Also, your body was present during her quantum leap. Your tight grip on Miss Bennet’s body ensured her body particles regrouped successfully in present time, even without pre-programming.”
He turned to stare at her, his face bright red.
“But who activated the time travel?” he said to the computer again.
“George.”
Darcy tightened his jaw. “Why?”
“He was just playing with the controls.”
His lips thinned. “What is the present time?”
“Year 2820.”
“And where are we?”
“Planet Austen.”

Return from the Dead by Enid Wilson

by Enid Wilson
~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~
“Anne, what are you doing?” George Darcy said to his wife.
“I’m looking at the crystal ball.”
“You are checking up on Fitzwilliam again. You know that’s not allowed except at the full moon.”
“But he's grown up into such a lonely, serious man – nothing like the cheerful, happy young boy he used to be.”
“I know. We both died too soon. Georgiana and the company are such a burden on him.”
“And all the women! They are only after his money. None of them are interested in his heart. Luckily, Fitzwilliam is smart and has refused to be tempted by them. It's a good thing that he has Richard and Charles as his friends. I don’t want him to be lonely. He is not young anymore, and he should be starting a family.”
“Wow, that ‘matchmaking mama’ mentality doesn’t die for women, even when they are living in heaven. Let him be. He has to choose his own destiny.”
“But he loves this Elizabeth. We should cross over to help him.”
“Cross over? You mean in a dream?”
“No, I hate dreams.”
“Then how do you want to cross over?”
“I loved Mission Impossible – not Tom Cruise though. I mean the old TV series. Let’s do a recording like this: ‘These are instructions from your late mother and father. Carry them out or risk punishment from the other world. This recording will be destroyed in ten seconds’. I think I’ll have Bingley gave the Mission Impossible score to Georgiana to play at a costume party and the words will only be heard by Fitzwilliam.”
“You want to scare the hell out of our boy? What if you cause him a heart attack?”
“Posh! He is not some sissy to be frightened by hearing the voices of his parents. I will make it fun. Maybe I'll send him a code to decipher. He and Richard used to mess about with secret codes.”
“You want to send him straight to this Elizabeth?”
“That would be too easy. Let’s just send him out to socialise a bit. Lately, his life revolves solely around Pemberley and Georgiana.”
“Then send him to Richard. He knows how to party.”
“Richard is fine, but he likes to gossip. Bingley is better. He is a cheerful chap and won’t tease our boy too much.”
“So your grand plan is to get Fitzwilliam out of Pemberley, and to let Bingley and him party together? How do you think he will end up with this Elizabeth?”
“As you said, he needs to choose his own destiny. What happens after that is up to him.”

Thank you Velvet for hosting me!
I’m pleased to announce the release of my latest novel, Every Savage Can Reproduce, a Pride and Prejudice-inspired science fiction.
You can check out the book cover blurb above for the gist of the story. But today I actually want to talk about Emma Woodhouse and George Knightley instead.
I’ve been writing Pride and Prejudice-inspired stories for three years now. Some readers have asked me to write about other Jane Austen characters. I haven’t done so in the past because I’m not very familiar with other books by JA. But this time, I’ve decided to take the plunge.

Let’s visualise Gwyneth Paltrow and Jeremy Northam:
(picture them in space suits with heavy weapons)
A moment later, what was left of the door of the mating capsule was pushed aside, and two heavily armed soldiers appeared in the opening, looking at them curiously.
“What have we got here? What a handsome couple! What are your names? Have you enjoyed the stay in the capsule?” the young woman of the pair asked cheerfully.
Before they could respond, the male officer said, “Why, Officer Woodhouse, don’t speak so foolishly. Clearly, they are fugitives from Earth. Let us follow protocol.”
“Captain Knightly, you’re no fun at all. What’s wrong with a bit of friendly…companionship?” Woodhouse responded.
Stepping forward, Elizabeth said, “I am Elizabeth Bennet, and this is my…friend, Fitzwilliam. We were attacked by the Military Intelligence Agency.” She waited for their reaction, hoping that the female officer’s friendliness meant that Darcy and she would come to no harm. She had no intention of telling them Darcy’s full name, as she didn’t want them to know that he was a close relative of the unpopular Queen of Planet Earth.
“I’m Emma,” the uniformed young woman stated. “Nice to meet you, Elizabeth! As to the MIA pursuit, we already know all about it. Only mating capsules chased by the MIA would be allowed to land here. We’ll have cruisers chasing the MIA away.”
“I don’t understand. Are you saying that you represent…a safe house for people from the mating capsules?”
“You could say that.”
“Where are we then? Can you help us get back to Planet Earth?”
“You’re on Planet Hartfield. Our ancestors migrated here because they didn’t like the crazy rules and pollution of Earth.”
“Emma, the protocol!” Captain Knightley objected with a frown.
“Fine, fine, sir! We must observe the protocol, Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam, or my dear Captain Knightley will be very unhappy. That means that we will have to scan you, first, to see if you are genuine articles.” – excerpt from Every Savage Can Reproduce
Happy reading!

Enid's Darcy

by Enid Wilson

It was the night of their engagement ball. When Mr. Darcy walked near the grand ballroom, he came upon a vision. It was Elizabeth! They were within twenty yards of each other, and so abruptly did she appear before him that he thought a goddess had come down to grace the earth.
His breath caught and his heart stopped beating for a moment. She was wearing a simple yet elegant white silk gown. He blinked several times, not believing what he saw. Did the dress look as though it was held together by shimmering ribbons adorning her shoulders and waist? Under the bright candles burning in the house, her body seemed to sparkle. He had never seen her wear white before. The colour brought out the pink blush on her skin and accentuated the deep red colour of the rubies on the garnet cross and the bracelet.
Her hair was piled on top of her head in an alluring fashion with some pink rose petals woven into it. Several unruly curls escaped the confines of the pins and framed her face and delicate neck. Darcy itched to roll those mischievous curls with his fingers and pull loose the ribbons to reveal her lush body.
But nothing could compare with her fine eyes which dazzled like diamonds. They widened on encountering his intense gaze.
“Fitzwilliam,” she whispered.
“Elizabeth,” he murmured hoarsely.
He walked towards her in a haze, slowly breathing in her fragrant scent and devouring the rosy colour of her body. He did not stop until he was inches from her. Her breathing quickened. Her bosom rose up and down in quick pace. With mouth open in a tempting curve, she raised her head to keep eye contact with him.
His muscles felt the closeness of her soft skin, as the air vibrated and transmitted the heat from her body to his.
“You look very handsome, sir,” she sighed.
He was lost for words for a second. Instead, lowering his head, slowly, he repeated “Elizabeth,” before touching his lips against hers.
She gasped.
He could feel her tremble. Her lips were moist and hot. Her quivering sent a wave of shocks through his body. He did not dare to deepen the kiss nor wrap his arms around her waist, for if he did, he would carry her out into the night and worship her beauty in the most intimate manner until eternity.
He simply continued to brush her lips, in this slow and light manner for some time. When he broke off to catch his breath, he felt he had already united with her, in spirit and mind, as one soul.
He looked at her with devotion. The blush on her face and body was heightened yet again. It almost rivalled the colour of the garnet cross. Unable to help himself, he raised his hand and traced his fingertips along the porcelain smooth skin outlined by the jewel. He swore he could feel the pulse of her blood and the beating of her heart through his skin.
His wits seemed to have deserted him. Once again whispering “My dearest Elizabeth,” he lowered his head further to worship the garnet cross which sat upon her cleavage.
She squirmed and moaned in a husky voice.
When his tongue tasted the sweet scent of her body, he was in heaven. Not able to think coherently, he bent down to pick her up in his arms. He wanted to go somewhere and he did not know where. But he walked on and found the stairs leading to the balcony on the second level of the grand ballroom. She seemed so overcome with emotion that she did not protest but rested her head on his shoulder.
Not two steps up the stairs, Darcy encountered a musician carrying a violin who looked at them with wide eyes. That finally woke him from his sensual cloud. With a scowl at the violinist, he slowly walked back down the steps and put Elizabeth down. Once she seemed to have found the use of her legs, he took her hand, placed it on the crook of his arms and led her to the front parlour, where their family would be assembling to greet the guests.
Elizabeth was silent for a few seconds. But once they had turned a corner, she chuckled.
Her infectious laughter spread to him and he grinned.
“What are you smiling at?” She arched her brow and glanced at him.
“Nothing.”
“There can be only two reasons for such a display of cheerfulness.”
“And are you going to enlighten me, madam?”
“Either you are happy that it was not my father who interrupted your impulsive act or you believe you look handsomer when you smile.”
Darcy threw back his head and laughed out loud. “I think the word impulsive better describes your character than mine. But I thank you for admitting that I look handsome.”
