Spell Check by Julie Wright

A skeleton is rattling its way out of the closet marked “FAMILY SECRET! KEEP OUT!”

Allyson Peterson believes that being hanged by the Salem High Witches is the absolute worst thing that can happen. But when her powers, wrested from the trolls of ancient Sweden, manifest themselves, she realizes that a prank hanging by vindictive cheerleaders is the least of her worries.

Ally accidentally sends her parents to the jungle to fight anacondas, turns her brother into a mute, and curses the entire cheerleading team with an illness that has no cure, proving that her spells need a little checking. Her Swedish grandmother shows up to help her through the worst part of all—surviving the Troll Trials and saving the guy of her dreams from a vengeance that has festered through-out generations.

The power is in her, if she can just get the magic right.

Author Julie Wright

Julie Wright (1972-still breathing) was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. She's lived in LA, Boston, and the literal middle of nowhere (don't ask). She wrote her first book when she was fifteen. She's written sixteen novels--nine of which are traditionally published. Julie won the Whitney award for best romance in 2010 with her novel Cross My Heart. She is agented by Sara Crowe at Harvey Klinger Inc.

She has one husband, three kids, two salamanders, one dog, and a varying amount of fish (depending on attrition).

She loves writing, reading, traveling, hiking, playing with her kids, and watching her husband make dinner.

She used to speak fluent Swedish, but now speaks only well enough to cuss out her children in public.

She hates mayonnaise.

Rating: 4

Ivy Granger series:
Shadow Sight (Ivy Granger #1)
Blood and Mistletoe (Ivy Granger #1.5)
Ghost Light (Ivy Granger #2)
Club Nexus (Ivy Granger #2.5)
Burning Bright (Ivy Granger 3)

Things are not going well at the offices of Private Eye. Jinx is having demon problems, the city is overrun with pyromaniacal imps, and Ivy's wisp powers are burning out of control, attracting the attention of both the Seelie and Unseelie courts.

Along came a faerie queen... It's the worst possible time for the Green Lady to call in a favor, but Ivy's bound by her deal with the glaistig. Too bad there's no wiggle room in faerie bargains.

Ivy must rid the city of imps, keep Jinx from murdering her one solid link to Hell, and fulfill her bargain with the Green Lady--with sidhe assassins hot on her tail.

Just another day's work for Ivy Granger, psychic detective.

My two-bits:

Ivy's story continues in book 3 with detective work focused on personal matters - specifically in regards to her best friend and co-worker, Jinx.

The first half of this story introduces a variety of fae, demons and witches. The descriptions and basic lore of each creature gives a good sense of Ivy's otherworld exposure.

The second half of the story has the action scenes that show off Ivy's paranormal and fighting skills. Oh, a bit of Ivy's on-going romance is included as well.

Another, fun summer read to add to your list.

I Become Shadow by Joe Shine

Release date: December 2, 2014
Publisher: Soho Teen
Genre: Thriller, YA
Paperback: 304 pages
Rating: 4

This debut thriller combines a pulse-pounding thriller (like False Memory or Starters) with a new adult coming-of-age story set at Texas A&M University.

When Ren Sharpe was fourteen, she was kidnapped by a shadowy organization called FATE and trained to be a human weapon.

Now, four years later, she receives her assignment: protect Gareth Young at all costs. Currently a student at Texas A&M, Gareth will someday change the world. FATE calls people like Gareth “FIPs”—future important people—and they’re everywhere, each with a FATE-trained shadow.

But when disaster strikes, Ren will have to turn on her maker. Together with Junie, a fellow abductee and the one person she trusts, Ren takes Gareth on the run.

Because whatever else happens, failure is not an option.

My two-bits:

I found this to be an exciting action thriller with main character, Ren, that was a sort-of assassin and sort-of body guard.

This first book in the series is an introduction of Ren and the making of a kick-ass heroine. Ren has a bit of snarky-ness which makes some of her scenes amusing sure to make you chuckle.

Being a young adult, Ren struggles with handling both work and young romance. Her love interests have desirable personalities that match her in different ways which makes for major conflict of her heart. At this point, I can't tell who her best match would be.

Many of the fight scenes were vivid and would lend well to a movie version.

Fun summer read!

About the author:
Joe Shine grew up in Austin, TX (the greatest city ever), and is a graduate of Texas A&M University.

He has an MFA from the Peter Stark Producing Program at the University of Southern California, and after brief stints in Los Angeles and Washington, DC, Joe returned home to Austin (repeat: the greatest city ever).

Joe has a normal human job like most everyone else but hopes to become a full-time writer one day, and this is where you, the reader, must do him a really big solid and love I Become Shadow, his first novel.
