The Supernatural London Underground series:
A Mirror Among Shattered Glass
book 2 - tba

First sentence(s):
It was early morning, and even though the omnipresent "they" say there is a time for everything, there had never been and would never be a good time for what he was about to do.

Unable to contain the deadly nature of her family secret and powers, nine-teen year old Romarin Demetri hails from California, U.S.A, to unearth her heritage as a descendant of serial-killer, Countess Bathory, the woman that lent Dracula his legend, and cursed Romarin with an appetite for blood.

Unenthusiastic about relocating to her birth city of London, a charming paranormal investigator with claim to the throne could change her mind, as he leads her to the only living and distant relative she has: a raven-haired recluse named Talia, who has taken refuge in an old castle in the heart of the city, and doesn’t seem to have a heart of her own.

After a rough introduction to the lethal, inappropriate, and enchantingly sarcastic people she calls her housemates, perhaps the other misfits will be her first true friends; However, as much as these people are like her, they still have hidden vendettas, a taste for revenge, and will struggle between what is just, and what will settle their psychological upheaval. There is only one way for Romarin to become part of the Supernatural London Underground: Can she be the one who challenges them to put down their ghosts and demons and make their world together?

PeekAbook:

My two-bits:

I found this book to be an introduction to a series that was heavy on the "getting to know you" aspect. It presented many characters and some of their backgrounds along with the main character.

Most of the time, the reading felt like hanging out with friends more than following a specific storyline.

There was some action and romance to hold my interest to the end.

About the author:
Romarin Demetri is a story crafter who loves black coffee, traveling abroad, and when her characters come home in some sort of trouble she swears she didn’t invent. Pulling from her B.A. in English and Psychology, her debut series, The Supernatural London Underground, is a blend of fantasy ground in reality, and a world a reader can truly escape to. As an eccentric and reader, she still enjoys creating the alternate reality in her urban fantasy series (more than anything!), and her interactive world waits for you at RomarinDemetri.com.

Series:
Demon's Grave
Midnight Ruling

First sentence(s):
Each syllable of her practiced incantation was perfect to her ears.

When strange shadows and messages plague Nora's daily life she fears for her sanity. To escape questions from her family, Nora joins her friends on a weekend getaway. Despite not liking Aidan Birket, Nora finds his remote, Victorian house charming. Until they discover the marble doorway on the third floor and, against Nora's better judgment, they open it.

Trespassing into an unfamiliar world called the Demon's Grave, the group face a charismatic demon and six nightmarish Challenges as punishment. Those that make it to the end can go home, but those that don't will be his forever. Friendships are tested, secrets revealed and sacrifices will be made.

Nora battles zombies, doppelgängers, eyeless bikers, and the demon—whose interests are more than just a game of cat and mouse. If it's all in her head, then it should be easy. But, if not, it means the demon knows about her sticky past, and the death of her twin sister.

Zombie sighting:
I did a zombie shuffle to my bedroom for clothes.
-chapter 2, page 18

My two-bits:

Perfect for the Halloween season with lots of paranormal action (zombie fighting, too) which keeps this story hopping.

The story starts out with a visit to an old Victorian house that gives off a haunted house vibe. But, quickly turns into something else more disturbing and creepy.

There is an ensemble cast of characters, but the focus in this book was on Nora and Aidan. A little of their backstories slowly get revealed as they accomplish their demon challenges.

And a touch of romance is introduced amidst the chaos.

Excerpt:

From the: PROLOGUE

A stifling presence swelled. Snuffing out the world's influences until the night transformed into something frighteningly still.

Even the frogs and crickets ceased. They waited and listened. She could sense the anticipation.

She felt the sacred vibrations all around her. A false move, voice or intention could shatter it. She adored it like a warm bath on a cold day or food on an empty stomach.

It had been years of waiting, yearning, and pleading with the world to see this moment unfold.

The pains her body endured were paltry compared to this—compared to him.

One of the brothers attempted to speak.

Hissing through her teeth, she glared over her shoulder.

With an audible click of teeth, the taller man's jaw shut. Doubt shadowed his rigid features and he looked to his smaller, more violent brother.

The second man with flaming orange hair clasped his knees to catch his breath and was looking up at the flames, then to her. The Devil lived in that one. He must have felt the earth speak to them. Not at the same level as she, of course, but he must have sensed it.

Remaining quiet, the more ruthless of her two tormenters stayed quiet, knowing what he'd done.

His mistake earlier could have botched the entire ritual. If the ritual had failed she knew he wouldn't pay for it, she would. She'd waited too long for this moment and suffered too much to allow that now.

Fear got the better of her and she whispered through the silence, quivering the thickened air. "If you screwed this up because you can't catch a kid, you'll pay." The idea spawned a physical pain in her chest. Frustrated with the emotions she twisted the heartache into something she could comprehend: anger.

The redhead smirked as if it were the most amusing thing she'd said all day. She was no match for him physically, he had demonstrated that on more than one occasion, but this time would be different.

Stillness gave way to a chill. His chill…no, his power. Despite being so near the fire, she felt like there was ice in her veins.

He was closer.

Gripping the black, leather-bound book to her chest she felt the power disturbing the air.

She hardly felt the howling wind above; though she could see it twisting the tip of the bonfire in a fiery vortex.

According to her book, the flames acted as a conduit between the two worlds.

Her partners shouted in alarm and she smiled inwardly.

They were fools, always bossing her around, thinking her inferior. The bruises on her arms and legs would fade and so would her memories of them. She doubted she would even think of them after tonight.

"What is this?" A mellifluous voice that might as well have pulled her into an embrace, whispered at her. He asked only her, not them, but her.

For a split second, she forgot to breathe.

The exhilaration wracking her limbs shuddered through her voice as she gasped. He was here at last, he was with her, he came after all the grueling work and sacrifice. This had been a moment she feared she may only experience in her imagination. She wanted to exclaim, "It's you!" but knew better. This demon wouldn't want praise even if she fell to the ground weeping.

Swallowing the nervous bile in the back of her throat she called out. "Do you like her?" The confidence ringing in her voice surprised her. Her insides were a sloshing muck in comparison.

"I wanted the other one," he answered in obvious displeasure.

Listening to his voice echo in her head, she tried to memorize it, to capture it.

She searched the bonfire wanting to see him. Those idiots, she thought. There were only two. I'd told them which one to sacrifice and what do they do? They could have ruined everything!

Breaking from her composure, she protested. "She couldn't have gone far. I can find…"

"You're wasting my time," his abrupt tone straightened her spine.

For the first time since initiating the ritual she felt a hint of fear. "I did not mean to. Please, what may I…"

"You sacrificed the wrong one."

"I sacrificed her for you," she answered, lifting her hands pleadingly. She knew running back to find the other child would take too long. The portal would close in a few minutes.

Shaking dirt off her fingertips she cleared her throat.

This was her last gateway to a better place, she reminded herself. "I want to join you in the Demon's Grave," she blurted in painful desperation.

The air was growing thinner, less vibrant, less…magical.

Dread wriggled inside of her as the silence stretched—ached.

On the verge of panic she hoped he hadn't abandoned her. "You can choose your Neophyte. I asked the Keeper from this realm and he confirmed this rule." Her heart fluttered like a trapped butterfly. "I wish to leave this world and join you. Choose me!"

Paradox

Ready for a new kind of urban fantasy? In Unelmoija: The Dreamshifter a pretty yet ordinary young woman's life is transformed beyond her imaginings when a traumatic incident changes her forever.

An unexpected encounter with the father she never knew and a mysterious man that repels and attracts her at the same time leads her to discover she's not who she thinks she is. Amy, unassuming, intelligent, with newly acquired superhuman skills, lives in a historic Miami waterfront estate. She’s about to discover that a safe location, youth and special abilities may not be enough to protect her from whoever wants her dead.

Zombie sighting:
"That explains why you looked like something from a zombie flick when you showed up in the kitchen. I take it that's what you mean by yesterday?"
-chapter 18

My two-bits:

This first book to a series (5 books so far) introduces a race of super humans living in the modern day. The sights, sounds and eats of Miami, Florida provide the backdrop for this story.

There is a dash of action and danger. But mostly, the main character, Amy, learns about her special skill and how to use/control it throughout the story.

Also, Amy gains insight on her parents and their history.

I found Amy to be a foodie. There were several scenes where the appreciation of food (or lack thereof) was the focus.

Book Excerpt:

“Help!”

A woman’s scream pierced the night and all thoughts of sleep fled as adrenaline pumped through my body. I sprinted down the street in the direction of the woman’s cry, scanning the sidewalks and alleyways, and listening for any sign of trouble.

“Please, somebody help me!”

The voice was weaker now, but I nodded to myself, suddenly sure of where the attack was taking place. I put on more speed, vaulted over a metal railing, and raced down the embankment toward the canal. The woman’s scream had come from beneath the bridge—the same bridge that hid the mouth of the sewer tunnel with the bloody grate and magically warded door.

I palmed a silver combat knife and a wooden stake as I ran, a fierce snarl curling my lips. I was not going to allow another vampire kill. Not on my watch.

Heart pounding, I eyed the narrow ledge leading into the dancing shadows beneath the bridge. There was no way I could make my way across that expanse of moss slick stone without discarding my weapons.

“Damn,” I muttered.

I shoved the wooden stake into a loop in my battle skirt and bit down on the silver knife, holding it between my teeth. I’d need both hands free to make the climb to the bridge. If I was dealing with vamps, I’d rather lead with the stake, but there was a chance that this was a mugging or rape. Vampires weren’t the only monsters that preyed on the weak.

It would be foolish to bring a stake to a knife fight. Everyone knows that.

Shoulders tight, I shimmied across the ledge. I was exposed, vulnerable, but the whimpering sound ahead of me kept me going. As my foot hit the wet platform with a splash, a clawed hand grabbed my leg in an iron grip.

My attacker wasn’t human.

I slashed out with the silver knife and the hand retreated, leaving behind a searing pain in my calf where the creature’s talons had punctured flesh. Working fast, I retrieved the wooden stake and, with a flick of the wrist, turned on my flashlight and tossed it into the shadows. The flashlight spun, illuminating a crumpled heap near the iron grate and three vampires: one to my left, one to my right, and one scuttling along the ceiling like a cockroach.

It was a goddamned ambush.

I didn’t know if the woman crumpled on the ground was still alive or not. Her cries had ceased, but there was nothing I could do for her at the moment. I was too busy trying to stay alive.

I spun to the left, slashing upward with the silver knife. The vamp on the ceiling hissed and scuttled to the right, giving me some breathing room. I shivered, my subconscious mind reeling in horror. These vamps weren’t even bothering to maintain a glamour. Instead of being drop dead gorgeous, these guys were just dead—as in mummified.

Skin the color and texture of dried parchment was stretched tightly over skeletal bodies that moved with an insectile, alien grace, but their grinning faces were the worst. I’ve seen a lot of monsters during my time as a Hunter, but there’s something about the fanged, rictus grin of a vampire that gives a girl chills—and not the romantic kind.

As soon as a vampire dies its first death, their body begins to dehydrate. It’s part of what makes them appear so monstrous in their true form. There’s just something nauseating about seeing such a grotesque caricature of a human moving around animated with life.

These vamps with their empty eye sockets and gaping sinus cavities were a prime example. As a vampire’s body deteriorates, the soft tissue is the first to go, which makes for some butt ugly vampires. Drinking blood helps, but nothing can fully restore life, not even necromancy. Vamps are nothing more than dried up, walking corpses.

Too bad their desiccated bodies don’t slow them down.

If I was going to survive this, I’d have to out think my opponents. I feigned a minor stumble, and the vamp on my left didn’t hesitate. The monster lunged in, fangs bared, the hollow pits of his eyes intent on my jugular. One, two, three…

He closed the distance and I thrust the wooden stake up beneath his ribcage and into his chest cavity. The vamp froze, completely paralyzed, and I knew I’d staked him through the heart. It wouldn’t kill him, but it would keep him out of the fight until I had the time to finish him off—and add his fangs to my necklace.

I grinned, showing my own small, white teeth.

“Okay, boys,” I said. “Who’s next?”

I drew my sword, now glad I’d worn my hunting gear to my visit with the rusalka. I’d had a feeling I might need my favorite blade. I guess I was right.

Lightning fast, the vamp struck. One second he was circling to my right trying to flank me, and the next he was tearing away a chunk of my flesh. The iron and silver coated steel boning of my corset deflected the worst of the attack, but one of his talons managed to slash through the space between.

I heard the sizzle of his claws, knowing the silver was eating away at the tips of the talons that scored across my abdomen and flank. I let out a satisfied grunt, but the zing of pleasure was premature.

Hot blood leaked from my side and the two vampires shrieked in hunger. Shit. The blood was stirring them into a feeding frenzy. I had to end this now, or I’d be the body they’d find in the canal tomorrow.

I drove my sword through the air, separating the vampire’s head from his body. The creature continued to cling to the ceiling for a moment, but when the head hit the cement with a meaty thud, both pieces of the beast burst into ash.

The sound of the vamp’s falling head still echoed throughout the chamber beneath the bridge as ash fell like grisly snow. The remaining vamp and I warily circled each other, searching for a weakness. Vampires like to play with their food, but I didn’t kid myself. Saliva was dripping from his elongated fangs and a leathery tongue darted out to lick dry, papery lips.

If I gave this one the opportunity, he’d go straight for the kill.

I struggled to keep my sword up and shifted my weight to allow for the wounds in my leg and side. I swallowed hard and grit my teeth. Every move tugged at the edges of the gash in my side, making it burn and bleed.

My knuckles whitened as I increased the grip on my sword, readying for the kill.

“Jenna!” a familiar voice cried out. “Behind you!”

I dropped to the ground and rolled, never hesitating. As I came to my feet, I faced not one vamp, but two. A female, judging from the sagging breasts, had joined the party. I flicked my eyes to the ground where the “victim” had been curled up just moments before.

The woman was gone.

“You smell delicious, ma chĂ©rie,” said the female vampire.

Oh yeah, this had been a trap from the very beginning.

Hunters' Guild series:
Hunting in Bruges
Hunting in Paris - coming in 2015

The only thing worse than being a Hunter in the fae-ridden city of Harborsmouth, is hunting vamps in Bruges.

Being shipped off to Belgium sucks. The medieval city of Bruges is quaint, but the local Hunters' Guild is understaffed, the canals are choked with dead bodies, and there's no shortage of supernatural predators as likely suspects.

On second thought, maybe Bruges isn't so bad after all.

With a desire to prove herself, protect the innocent, and advance within the ranks of the Hunters' Guild, Jenna Lehane hits the cobbled streets of Bruges with blades at the ready. Someone, or something, is murdering tourists and dumping their bodies in the city's scenic canals. With the help of a mysterious stranger, Jenna begins to piece together clues that are dotted throughout the city like blood spatter.

Determined to stop the killings, Jenna delves into a bloody local history that only raises more questions--but some secrets are best left buried. Jenna must put her combat training to the test as she struggles to unearth the truth about an ancient enemy.

Hunting in Bruges is the first novel in the Hunters' Guild urban fantasy series set in the world of Ivy Granger.

Zombie sighting:
Today he was wearing a lime green patterned scarf that looked paisley, but on closer inspection was a riot of white and red zombie unicorns.
-chapter 16

My two-bits:

I found this to be primarily about paranormal fighting action in an awesome location, Bruges. The different historical bits and descriptions of sights in town are what caught my interest the most.

Jenna is definitely one to add to my list of kick-ass fiction heroines.

If you like the Ivy Granger series, then you will like this one too as it takes you into another aspect and perspective of that paranormal world.

And as if fangs and fur weren’t bad enough, Mercy must deal with the scariest creature of all: her mother, who is convinced that Mercy is making a mess of her life and determined to set her daughter on the right course.

The thrilling adventures of Mercy Thompson–Moon Called, Blood Bound, and Iron Kissed–have topped the New York Times bestseller list. Now Mercy makes her comics debut in an exclusive new story created by Patricia Briggs. Mercy Thompson: Homecoming is sure to please longtime fans and capture new ones with its mix of unforgettable characters and thrilling supernatural intrigue.

PeekAbook:

My two-bits:

This was a great way to get introduced to Mercy and the Mercy Thompson series. There were brief appearances from the main characters which left me wanting.

I got just the right amount of action and character descriptions to get me hooked. After reading this graphic novel, I definitely want to go to the book series to read more about this world.

The really interesting trait about Mercy is that she does not shift into a werewolf, but another creature. So, I am curious to learn about the special abilities and lore of that particular creature.

The illustrations were good as well and portrayed actions scenes, especially the shifting scenes really well (see sample comic page below).

Guest post: Hunting in Bruges by E.J. Stevens

Hunting in Bruges, the first novel in the Hunters' Guild series, is set in Bruges, Belgium and author E.J. Stevens is taking us on a spooky trip to Bruges' Top 10 Spooky Places.

Let's see what terrifying places E.J. has planned for our tour.

Top 10 Spooky Places in Bruges

The charming medieval city of Bruges, Belgium may seem like an unusual setting for an urban fantasy novel. The city is known for its tranquil canals, historic buildings, and romantic vistas.  But the moment I saw a picture of Bruges, my mind began populating its cobblestone streets with bloodthirsty vampires, flesh eating ghouls, monstrous fae, and wailing ghosts.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered that there really was something sinister in the city's bloody history.  My research into Bruges began in earnest, and last year I completed my book research with a trip to Belgium. The pictures included with this post are from that research trip. These photos are taken during daylight hours, but I can assure you that the atmosphere becomes decidedly spooky when the sun goes down over West Flanders.  Do ghosts walk the streets of Bruges?

I will let you decide.

The Canals
The canals play an important part in my novel, Hunting in Bruges. Jenna Lehane, a Hunter with a troubled past, arrives in Bruges to discover that something is killing humans and disposing of their bodies in the canals. Not only are the canals filling with corpses, but there are supernatural horrors that call the canals their home.  While I was visiting Bruges, the canals were the watery grave for more than one unfortunate creature.  Did these ducks, pigeons, and small mammals die from natural causes, or is there something deadly lurking within these dark waters?

~*~

Jerusalem Church (Jeruzalemkerk)
I have to admit that I was completely unprepared for the experience I had within the stone walls of Jerusalem Church. The macabre altarpiece and tomb were ghoulish, but the truly terrifying part of this church lay in a crawlspace in the vaulted chapel in the back. A cloth wrapped body is on display, and though I've read that this is a replica of Christ's tomb, there is something chilling about that small chamber. My travel companion bolted out the door...and I wasn't far behind. (Note: No pictures came out of the rear tomb. The photos were completely black.)

Beguinage (Begijnhof)
Beguines were lay sisters who lived and dressed as nuns, but did not take vows. The Beguinage continues to be a place of silence within the bustling city--a silence that can seem downright eerie. During my trip, the courtyard was filled with a field of wilting daffodils. Beauty with an edge of decay seemed to be the common theme of this place. One house has been preserved in its original rustic state and visitors can wander the maze of tiny rooms filled with antique furniture and aging lace to see the way in which the Beguines lived. I swear that someone, or something, was watching me during my entire visit. With every creak of the old wooden floors, my unease grew and I made a hasty retreat to Minnewater Park.

Basilica of the Holy Blood (Heilig-Bloedbasiliek)
12th century basilica located on Burg square in the heart of Bruges. The church houses the relic of the Holy Blood.  The Holy Blood is venerated daily, and is paraded through the streets of Bruges during the Procession of the Holy Blood on Ascension Day.

Saint John's Hospital (Sint-Janshospitaal)
This place is not for the faint of heart.  The 11th century hospital is one of the oldest in Europe and contains the often grotesque artwork of Hans Memling, as well as many antique surgical implements. The artwork and objects of torture are absolutely horrifying and the depictions of nuns in their traditional garb had me jumping at my shadow.

Another five notable places to add to any ghost tour of Bruges are the Spookhuis, Retsin's Lucifernum, Belfort, Blind Donkey Alley, and a viewing of Heironymous Bosch's haunting triptych The Last Judgement at the Groeningemuseum.

Ivy Granger series:
Shadow Sight (Ivy Granger #1)
Blood and Mistletoe (Ivy Granger #1.5)
Ghost Light (Ivy Granger #2)
Club Nexus (Ivy Granger #2.5)
Burning Bright (Ivy Granger 3)

A demon, an Unseelie faerie, and a vampire walk into a bar...

This Ivy Granger ebook special contains short stories set in Club Nexus, the hidden haunt of Harborsmouth's paranormal underworld.

ICED

A bargain gone wrong leads a highborn Unseelie faerie to life as an enslaved bartender with a taste for revenge.

DUSTED

Being a highly skilled predator doesn't necessarily put you at the top of the food chain at Club Nexus. A southern vampire with a hankering for blood and wanton violence may have bit off more than he can chew.

DEMONIZED

The demon attorney we love to hate has his eye on a certain rockabilly human. Too bad she's brought a crossbow loaded with holy water dipped bolts for this night on the town.

JINXED

Just when Jinx needs a carefree girl's night out with Ivy, a smoking hot demon tries to buy her a drink. She really is the unluckiest human on the planet.

My two-bits:

So, I read this out of order. But, no problem as this set of short stories provides backstory for the 3rd book in the series, Burning Bright and works alright as a standalone.

The location of the stories primarily take place in Club Nexus which is an interesting world unto its own. It is filled with colorful characters with shady dealings and back room secrets along with the party scene.

Met and got to know more about demon, vampire and various fae culture in Ivy's paranormal world that is a good supplement to this series.

I am looking forward to see how the budding romance between demon, Forneus, and human, Jinx progresses.

Just released: June 17, 2014
Publisher: Sacred Oaks Press
Genre: Paranormal, Urban Fantasy
Paperback: 282 pages
Rating: 4

Ivy Granger series:
Shadow Sight (Ivy Granger #1)
Blood and Mistletoe (Ivy Granger #1.5)
Ghost Light (Ivy Granger #2)
Club Nexus (Ivy Granger #2.5)
Burning Bright (Ivy Granger 3)

Things are not going well at the offices of Private Eye. Jinx is having demon problems, the city is overrun with pyromaniacal imps, and Ivy's wisp powers are burning out of control, attracting the attention of both the Seelie and Unseelie courts.

Along came a faerie queen... It's the worst possible time for the Green Lady to call in a favor, but Ivy's bound by her deal with the glaistig. Too bad there's no wiggle room in faerie bargains.

Ivy must rid the city of imps, keep Jinx from murdering her one solid link to Hell, and fulfill her bargain with the Green Lady--with sidhe assassins hot on her tail.

Just another day's work for Ivy Granger, psychic detective.

My two-bits:

Ivy's story continues in book 3 with detective work focused on personal matters - specifically in regards to her best friend and co-worker, Jinx.

The first half of this story introduces a variety of fae, demons and witches. The descriptions and basic lore of each creature gives a good sense of Ivy's otherworld exposure.

The second half of the story has the action scenes that show off Ivy's paranormal and fighting skills. Oh, a bit of Ivy's on-going romance is included as well.

Another, fun summer read to add to your list.
