I'm waiting for...

News of the World
by Paulette Jiles
-Historical, Western
Release date: October 4, 2016
Amazon | Goodreads

It is 1870 and Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels through northern Texas, giving live readings to paying audiences hungry for news of the world. An elderly widower who has lived through three wars and fought in two of them, the captain enjoys his rootless, solitary existence.

In Wichita Falls, he is offered a $50 gold piece to deliver a young orphan to her relatives in San Antonio. Four years earlier, a band of Kiowa raiders killed Johanna’s parents and sister; sparing the little girl, they raised her as one of their own. Recently rescued by the U.S. army, the ten-year-old has once again been torn away from the only home she knows.

Their 400-mile journey south through unsettled territory and unforgiving terrain proves difficult and at times dangerous. Johanna has forgotten the English language, tries to escape at every opportunity, throws away her shoes, and refuses to act “civilized.” Yet as the miles pass, the two lonely survivors tentatively begin to trust each other, forging a bond that marks the difference between life and death in this treacherous land.

Arriving in San Antonio, the reunion is neither happy nor welcome. The captain must hand Johanna over to an aunt and uncle she does not remember—strangers who regard her as an unwanted burden. A respectable man, Captain Kidd is faced with a terrible choice: abandon the girl to her fate or become—in the eyes of the law—a kidnapper himself. Exquisitely rendered and morally complex, News of the World is a brilliant work of historical fiction that explores the boundaries of family, responsibility, honor, and trust.

=====> Piqued my interest when it became a National Book Award Finalist–Fiction 2016.

It weren't no secret that Pa owned the best plot of land 'long Granite Creek, and I reckon that's why they killed him.

PeekAbook:

My two-bits:

LOVED the cover for this book!

LOVED the wild west vibe of this book. It was fun to get into the tale with the spunky and sassy dialogue.

At times, it felt like a road trip on horses through dusty trails with various elements of danger. I got a good sense of the harsh living style of the past.

Also LOVED the character growth and relationships made throughout the story. The main character, Kate, was a good strong protagonist who kept true.

I liked the interesting twists that came up.

Got me adding some westerns to my binge watching schedule.

Zombie-Killer Bill is a gunslinger hired to kill the Illegal zombies of the wild west. The Illegals - raging, flesh-eating monsters - spread the infection more than their zombie counterparts - the docile Slave or coherent Legals.

Bill's new job however, is bigger than just a routine zombie slaying. Dozens of Legal and Slave zombies have been brutally murdered on the Hansen Zombie Farm, leaving only the suspicion that a single crazed man was behind it all.

To solve the murders Bill teams up with a unlikely partner and hits the dusty trail. Together they risk life and limb to catch the mad-scientist before he changes the west as they know it.

Amusing quote:
With violent precision gifted only to those who been in more scuffles than a Catholic prient had prayers, he decked the man in the nose.
- page 46, chapter 5

My two-bits:
In-a-word(s): silver flask
This exciting blend of classic wild west, apocalypse and zombies makes you hoot-n-holler with jubilee!

The three different strata of zombies provides an interesting mix that makes you cheer for some and run from others.

This post is part of Moira Rogers’ Wild Web Adventure Promo. For full rules and disclaimers, or to hold your own kindle contest, visit the contest post. Winners will be chosen during the first week of April.

About the book:
Wilder Harding is a bloodhound, created by the Guild to hunt down and kill vampires on America’s frontier. His enhanced abilities come with a high price: on the full moon, he becomes capable of savagery beyond telling, while the new moon brings a sexual hunger that borders on madness.

Rescuing a weapons inventor from undead kidnappers is just another assignment, though one with an added complication–keeping his hands off the man’s pretty young apprentice, who insists on tagging along.

At odds with polite society, Satira’s only constant has been the aging weapons inventor who treats her like a daughter. She isn’t going to trust Wilder with Nathaniel’s life, not when the Guild might decide the old man isn’t worth saving. Besides, if there’s one thing she’s learned, it’s that brains are more important than brawn.

As the search stretches far longer than Wilder planned, he finds himself fighting against time. If Satira is still at his side when the new moon comes, nothing will stop him from claiming her. Worse, she seems all too willing. If their passion unlocks the beast inside, no one will be safe. Not even the man they’re fighting to save.

Warning: This book contains a crude, gun-slinging, vampire-hunting hero who howls at the full moon and a smart, stubborn heroine who invents mad-scientist weapons. Also included: wild frontier adventures, brothels, danger, betrayal and a good dose of wicked loving in an alternate Wild West.

Meet the characters and read an excerpt here.

Digital Versions: Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Samhain Publishing, Amazon UK, Kobo
