Demon High by Lori Devoti

Demon High
by Lori Devoti

Published: 2011
ebook
Rating: 5

Description from the amazon:
Lucinda Dent never planned to call demons. She wasn’t stupid, after all. She’d seen what the addiction had done to her mother. But her mother has been gone for ten years, sucked into hell by a demon, and all Lucinda has left is her grandmother and the house she grew up in. Who could blame her for using the only thing her mother gave her, a talent for demon calling, to save them?

Lucinda teams up with an old friend and together they set up business, calling demons. But soon things go terribly wrong.

Demons are loose in Caldera High, and not only is Lucinda responsible, she just might be in love with one of them. Can love conquer all or is Lucinda about to lose everything--her home, her new love, and her soul?

Authors Note: This novel is dark urban fantasy with romantic elements. It contains both swear words and sexual situations. It is not squeaky clean.

Amusing quote:
With no other plan, Brittany convinced me doing some research was a better bet than charging into the school, holy water boiling and crucifixes blazing.
- location 1404, chapter 8

My two-bits:
In-a-word(s): entwined

I liked this dark demon tale. It was a good intro to a world of demons as I didn't really know any lore about them before.

The character growth was interesting to watch and I would be love to read a sequel or series to see how she develops.

Genre: Action, Paranormal, Romance, Werewolves, Zombies
Paperback: 288 pages
Rating: 4

Description from the amazon:
Caleb Locke lived for one thing--killing zombies. And this man--this legend--was exactly what Samantha Wagner needed. In mist-shrouded alleys, hunted by zombies, haunted by fear, she vowed to find Caleb and convince him to help her. But she hadn't counted on falling in love....

Caleb kept his own secrets--like the one he couldn't hide when the moon was full. But his wolf was drawn to Samantha, recognizing her as his mate. With her in his arms, Caleb reveled in passion...and rued his deception.

Would she still love the man who fought by her side if she realized that zombies weren't the only monsters? Samantha would have to make a choice--and she only had till the next full moon.

My two-bits:
In-a-word(s):
This is a modern day tale in a world that includes paranormal activity. My first werewolves and zombies combo story was very action-packed. The gal knows how to handle a gun. Being a romance novel, there are some steamy scenes too.

Also, a couple surprising reveals in here.

Amusing quote:
I'm nobody's patsy.
- Caleb to Samantha, chapter 8, page 106

Zombie Interview by Lori Devoti

Bio: Zeen Lewis, twenty two at time of death/change. Lover of all things anti.
Zeen is engaged in a traffic stop...stopping traffic that is.

LD: So, rumor has it you volunteered to be a zombie. What on earth for?

Zeen: Did you see that asshole cut me off? I can't believe some people's nerve.

She glances at a body-less arm she's been holding since I arrived. With a grin, she forces three of the dead fingers toward the palm, then waves the arm overhead, flashing the 'asshole' in question the bird.

Yeah, run, she yells. That's what you should do.

She drops the hand and looks back at me.

What was your question?

LD: So, you're enjoying being a zombie? Would you recommend it to your friends?

Zeen: Her gaze darting over the traffic jam, she shrugs.

Yeah, sure, whatever. Is that a school bus back there?

LD: After assuring Zeen there's no school bus within a hundred miles, I continue.

How's the dating life? How about clubs? Any hot spots for zombies?

Zeen: Dating? Clubs? Who has time for that? I don't look for action anymore. I make action.

She jumps onto the hood of a SUV and kicks out the windshield. The driver's side door flies open. A man dressed in khakis and a polo shirt falls onto the pavement.

Zeen, busy jumping up and down on the vehicle's hood doesn't seem to notice.

LD: If you could have become any other creature what would it have been?

Zeen: She stops jumping and takes two giant steps toward me. Still on the hood, she stares down at me.

Not a goddamn vampire, that's for sure. Freaking fourteen-year-olds have ruined them for everyone. T-shirts, sparkles.

She rolls her eyes.

For a moment I'm afraid one might fall out.

I step back.

When I'm confident she isn't about to lose any necessary parts, I continue.

LD: How do you feel about zombie hunters?

Zeen: Taste like chicken.

She grins.

There's a bit of something stuck in her front teeth.

I don't ask.
