To Be Read (TBR) Pile Challenge 2022

2022 To Be Read (TBR) Pile Challenge
hosted by Roof Beam Reader
January 1 to December 31, 2022 (details)
#TBR2022RBR

GOAL: Read 12 books on your TBR shelf. Each of these 12 books must have been on your bookshelf or “To Be Read” list for AT LEAST one full year. This means the book cannot have a publication date of 1/1/2021 or later (any book published in the year 2020 or earlier qualifies, as long as it has been on your TBR pile). Caveat: Two (2) alternates are allowed, just in case one or two of the books ends up in the “did not finish (DNF)” pile.

Mood reader that I am these days makes me hesitant to commit to a list. I have a tentative stack, but will post actual books read as I work towards the twelfth book.

=====> Book Passage, Corte Madera, hosted a visit from author, Wendy Simmons featuring her latest novel. It was interesting to learn that propaganda "staged" tours are what is available now if you were to take a trip to North Korea. Also, there is a lack of proper plumbing and electricity in most places.

Screenplay: Dan Sterling
Story: Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Dan Sterling
Starring: James Franco, Seth Rogen, Randall Park
-Comedy, North Korea | imdb | my rating: 5

Dave Skylark and producer Aaron Rapoport run the celebrity tabloid show "Skylark Tonight." When they land an interview with a surprise fan, North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un, they are recruited by the CIA to turn their trip to Pyongyang into an assassination mission.

=====> The humor is spot on for this topic. Lots of laughs, but got the underlying messages.

What a treat it was to see Lizzy Caplan in this as I had just finished watching Masters of Sex season 2.

AND binge watched: DVD

Masters of Sex
tv series, Season 2
Based on book: Masters of Sex: The Life and Times of William Masters and Virginia Johnson,
the Couple Who Taught America How to Love by Thomas Maier
Starring: Michael Sheen, Lizzy Caplan
-Drama | imdb | my rating: 5

Drama about the pioneers of the science of human sexuality whose research touched off the sexual revolution.

=====> I love this series for the late 50s to 60s fashion style captured in this period piece. The topic and how both Masters and Johnson handled it along with their private lives also makes this a fascinating series. I think Mad Men fans will like this one.

Currently flipping through: from the library

Game of Scones:
All Men Must Dine
by Jammy Lannister
-Humor, Cookbook
Amazon | Goodreads

=====> The recipe for Tyrion Shortbread is a hoot. But looks tasty. Got a kick out of looking at the pictures as most of them are morbid.

My Holiday in North Korea
The Funniest/Worst Place on Earth
by Wendy E. Simmons
-Photography, Travel
Release date: May 3, 2016
Amazon | Goodreads | Excerpt

Most people want out of North Korea. Wendy Simmons wanted in.

In My Holiday in North Korea: The Funniest/Worst Place on Earth, Wendy shares a glimpse of North Korea as it’s never been seen before. Even though it’s the scariest place on Earth, somehow Wendy forgot to check her sense of humor at the border.

But Wendy’s initial amusement and bewilderment soon turned to frustration and growing paranoia. Before long, she learned the essential conundrum of “tourism” in North Korea: Travel is truly a love affair. But, just like love, it’s a two-way street. And North Korea deprives you of all this. They want you to fall in love with the singular vision of the country they’re willing to show you and nothing more.

Through poignant, laugh-out-loud essays and 92 never-before-published color photographs of North Korea, Wendy chronicles one of the strangest vacations ever. Along the way, she bares all while undergoing an inner journey as convoluted as the country itself.

=====> With my current fascination with Korea, it is no wonder I am waiting for this one ;-)
