Happy release: Threads of Magic by Monica Fairview

Threads of Magic:
A Pride and Prejudice variation
by Monica Fairview
Fantasy, Regency, Romance, Jane Austen theme | Expected publication: January 25, 2022 | Goodreads

In a magical Regency England, two powerful magicians strive to find a balance between love and duty as they confront enemies who might well be their closest friends.

Elizabeth Bennet may be a heroine, but by defying some of the most powerful mages in England, she has made enemies who will stop at nothing to embroil her in scandal.

So when she is accused of endangering the Royal Mages through her reckless actions, she no longer knows who to trust. Even the gentleman she loves is taking their side. It seems the only person who believes her is the captive French mage who is imprisoned in the cellar at Netherfield.

Meanwhile, Fitzwilliam Darcy is willing to fight to the death to defend Elizabeth, if only she would stop getting herself into trouble. Why does she always have to break the rules? And why does even her sister Jane cause him so many problems?

Join us in this magical Jane Austen Regency variation. Set mostly in Meryton, with familiar beloved characters from Pride and Prejudice, you will once again be captivated by Elizabeth and Darcy as they struggle to find true love against the backdrop of England’s war with Napoleon.

Threads of Magic is Book 2 of Mr. Darcy’s Magic. It is a standalone novel without cliff-hangers, but it is best read as part of a series.

my rating: 4

A sparkling tale of Regency England, a forced marriage, and two magicians who must work together to save the Kingdom.

Elizabeth Bennet is stunned when the Royal Mages come to her peaceful country home of Longbourn to take her away. She is even more bewildered when she is commanded to marry a powerful mage by the name of Fitzwilliam Darcy. She has always dreamed of marrying for love, and an arranged marriage with an arrogant stranger was never part of her plans.

But Darcy and Elizabeth have no choice in the matter. Uniting their two forms of magic is essential if the Kingdom is to defeat Napoleon’s mages. They may dislike each other on sight, but Darcy and Elizabeth have to overcome their differences and find common ground before it is too late. Fortunately, it is not long before the sparks begin to fly between them.

Join the author of ‘Fortune and Felicity’ in this Jane Austen Fantasy Variation, an enchanting story of determination, love, and hope against all odds.

my two-bits:

With a touch of magical elements, Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth go through a push-pull romance while preparing for a battle to save country and home. The story has a primary focus on the couple and their efforts to unite. No dancing. No pesky Mr. Collins.

I liked the friendship developed between Elizabeth and Caroline Bingley.

About the author:
Monica Fairview writes Jane Austen sequels and variations as well as Regencies. Her latest novel is a Pride and Prejudice fantasy variation, Dangerous Magic. Her biggest claim to fame is living in Elizabeth Gaskell’s house in Manchester, long before the house was restored. After studying in the USA, she taught literature, then became an acupuncturist. She now lives near London.

Monica loves anything to do with the nineteenth century, and obsessively follows every period drama she can find. Some of her favorites are ‘North and South’, ‘Bright Star’ and ‘War and Peace’, and a dozen others that she couldn’t possibly list here. Of course, she has watched Pride and Prejudice (1995 and 2005) more times than she could count on her hands and toes.

Monica enjoys reading fantasy and post-apocalyptic novels but avoids zombies like the plague. She loves to laugh, drink tea, and visit National Trust historic properties [those were the days!], and she is convinced that her two cats can understand everything she says.

Excerpt:

Elizabeth disliked the idea of having to share a room. Not in principle, of course. She had always shared with her sister Jane, but this was different. When Lady Alice first took her to the Maidens’ Hall, she had implied that all single ladies shared rooms, to ensure that they stuck to the rules.

“We cannot have you sneaking off to see Mr. Darcy before you are married,” she had added, turning her stern look on Elizabeth.

Elizabeth had laughed. The very idea that she could possibly be tempted to meet clandestinely with the austere Mr. Darcy was ridiculous. If anything, after their last encounter, she would have preferred never to meet him again.

Elizabeth had quickly discovered that sharing rooms was only true in the case of young apprentices at the Academy, not adult Royal mages. However, when she heard she was to board with Miss Caroline Bingley, Elizabeth did not mind. She had liked Mr. Bingley on sight, and she was certain she would get on with his sister. The tall, fashionably dressed young lady was surprised at discovering that an extra bed was being put in her bedchamber for Elizabeth, but she was polite and willing to be helpful. Miss Bingley showed her around the Maidens’ Hall, introduced her to some of the other mages, and explained what to expect and where to find things.

Sitting on her bed that first afternoon, Elizabeth leaned her back on the wall and confided her unhappiness to Miss Bingley, much as she would have done with her sister Jane. She shared the story of how the mages had appeared out of the blue and practically dragged her to the Hall to marry Mr. Darcy.

Miss Bingley listened without interruption, but then as Elizabeth came to the end of her tale, she gave a little contemptuous laugh.

“You do know that Mr. Darcy owns one of the largest estates in Derbyshire,” said Miss Bingley. “And that he possesses a large fortune.”

“I know it now. I did not know it at the time.”

“Surely now, armed with that knowledge, you must be thrilled at such an opportunity.”

“Not at all,” replied Elizabeth, “Now that I have met Mr. Darcy, I am even less inclined to marry him.”

Miss Bingley stared but said nothing. Elizabeth sighed. If they had given her the time to pack her things, she might have brought a book, but she had nothing to do now. She wanted to write a letter to her family, but she needed to find out where to obtain paper and ink.

Before she could ask, however, Miss Bingley spoke again.

“What academy did you study at before you came here?”

“I didn’t study at one. There wasn’t an academy anywhere near where we lived, and my father didn’t want to part with me.” “You never studied magic formally?”

Elizabeth shook her head with a smile. “No.”

Again, Miss Bingley gawked. Elizabeth began to wonder if Miss Bingley was as friendly as she appeared.

There was a long silence. “You know,” said Miss Bingley, suddenly, “most young ladies would give an arm and a leg to be able to marry Mr. Darcy.”

“I would imagine that would rather defeat the purpose.”

Miss Bingley wrinkled her forehead, perplexed.

“If they did give away an arm and a leg, it would be more difficult for them to assist Mr. Darcy, would it not?”

Miss Bingley snickered. “I suppose so. It was not meant to be literal, Miss Bennet.”

Elizabeth’s smile grew wider. “I have always thought the English language fascinating. One never knows quite how to understand things.”

Miss Bingley gave her a superior look and turned to pick up a book from the table near her bed.

“Is your book entertaining?” asked Elizabeth, feeling more cheerful now that she had flustered Miss Bingley.

“Hardly,” said Miss Bingley. “It is The Common Compendium of Spells.”

“You are studying spells, then? What do you read for pleasure, Miss Bingley?”

“We have no time to read for pleasure at the Hall, Miss Bennet.”

Elizabeth gave Miss Bingley a bemused look. “Then it is even worse than I imagined. There is nothing like the pleasure of a good novel.”

“We are not here for pleasure, Miss Bennet. We are here to save the Kingdom from Napoleon.”

“I suppose, then, that we must remain eternally grim.”

A word with: William Darcy VIII from Steampunk Darcy by Monica Fairview

~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~
by Monica Fairview
~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~

Mr. William Darcy VIII is the hero of Steampunk Darcy. He is here to indulge in one of his favourite treats.

~~~
“Mr. William Darcy VIII,” intoned the automaton Butler.
From her place at the helm, Lady Kitty Crumpledoodle suppressed an unladylike whoop of triumph. Mr. Darcy had actually deigned to come. The clatter of cups and scraping of forks against china in the gondola ceased as everyone turned towards the entrance.
“Could you take over, please?” she said to her lieutenant and craned her neck to catch her first glimpse of the famous personage.
He strode into the Filigree as though he owned it, his silver gaze sliding over the room to locate his hostess.
She hurried across the gondola, which was no easy task, given the scattering of white-covered covered tables scattered around. It would not do to keep Mr. Darcy waiting. Why, he might even decide to leave, which would be such a disappointment.
“Mr. Darcy,” said Lady Crumpledoodle. “So pleased you decided to honor our gathering with your presence.”
“Delighted to be here,” he said.
Pretending to be gazing over the edge of the Gondola down to the spires of the houses of Parliament just beneath them, Lady Crumpledoodle examined him surreptitiously.
The newscasts didn’t do him justice at all. They didn’t capture that sense of energy and they didn’t capture the particular glimmer of those silver grey eyes. Raven black hair with a green swirl slouched down over the top of his left eye and slid just behind his ear to touch his neck. A tailored green frockcoat skimmed the top of his knees. He had clearly chosen his silver cravat to match his eyes. A silver earpiece with jade stones complemented his outfit.
Everything looked deliberate, except that it was ever so slightly skewed. His earpiece and cravat were crooked, his hair rumpled, and his shirt not quite as starched as it ought to be. On anyone else, this might have diminished his appearance, but in his case, it added to his sense of purpose. He looked like a Victorian gentleman, but he gave the impression of something else completely; something with hazardous potential like a steam engine, full of driving energy.
He raised a monocle to his eye.
“So what entertainment do you have prepared for us, Lady Crumpledoodle?”
“You,” said Lady Crumpledoodle. “You shall be our entertainment.”
She waited tensely for his reaction. Would he turn and return to his own dirigible?
He took it in his stride. Slanting his left brow upwards, he gave her a quick smile. “I see. So I am to be your buffoon? How exactly do you propose that I entertain you?”
“You are to answer questions from our guests.”
He wasn’t happy about it. Still, he was too much of a gentleman to raise a fuss.
“I am at your service, madam. Meanwhile, rumor has it that you are serving your famous mince pies. I wonder if you would indulge me with one, along with a cup of white tea.”
~~~

As you can see, Mr. Darcy would be happy to answer questions. He will choose a selected few and give them his best shot.

William Darcy is obsessed with his ancestors. So much so that he intends to rebuild Pemberley (destroyed during the Uprising) stone by stone, and he wants to employ reconstruction expert Seraphene Grant to help him.

Or does he? Seraphene wasn't born yesterday. She can smell a rat, particularly when it stinks all the way up to her airship. She knows Darcy is hiding something. But with the Authorities after her and her other options dwindling by the moment, the temptation of genuine English tea and a gorgeous Steampunk gentleman are very difficult to resist.

But what if Darcy's mystery job courts nothing but trouble? What if Darcy is harboring a secret to kill for? When kiss comes to shove, will Darcy's secret destroy Seraphene, or will it be her salvation?

Monica's Darcy

~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~
by Monica Fairview
~-~-~-~-~ guest ~-~-~-~-~

Had Fitzwilliam Darcy known that departure from convention would entail such a level of anxiety, he would have been perfectly satisfied to follow convention and do as his ancestors had done for the last three hundred years. When he had issued his invitations, however, he had allowed impulse to rule as he and Elizabeth had laid plans for this most unusual of Winter Balls.

The invitations had gone out, advising guests to come prepared for a very different kind of evening. Young ladies’ hearts fluttered at the excitement of something new, mothers’ hearts envisioned complex possibilities, and young men’s hearts’ thumped at the prospect of young ladies tumbling into their arms. Older landowners, who had nothing to gain and everything to lose by being deprived of their customary card games, wrote to express their outrage at such a travesty, invoking tried and true Darcy tradition, but to no avail.

Darcy and Elizabeth soon discovered the fatal flaw in their plan. Everything hinged on the weather. For days now they had held their breath, peering anxiously out of windows, and hoping that no unseasonable conditions would spell doom on the evening’s amusements.

A dusting of snow had covered the hills around Pemberley that very morning, making them glisten and glitter with white, provoking laughter in Elizabeth and puzzlement in the sheep who did not know what had happened to their verdant pastures. Tonight the pretty lanterns that lined the pathways to the large tent cast coloured lights on the snow, and the illumination around the lake glimmered in the ice. It was like stepping into a whimsical fairyland.

Finally, the moment they had been waiting for – Robert Darcy’s familiar figure at the entrance to the garden. He was the reason for all this, for it was intended as a surprise for Darcy’s American cousin. It had all been concocted when the other Mr Darcy – after a few glasses of claret – had confessed how much he missed his native Boston.

They had intended him to be the last to arrive, and here he was. As he stepped onto the lighted path with Caroline next to him, her arms enveloped in a thick muff, Elizabeth poked Darcy in the side with her elbow.

Darcy swallowed down the yelp that rose to his lips and bowed perfectly correctly to his cousin.

The other Mr Darcy bowed back, then grinned widely. “Fitz, you devil. What possessed you to hold a party outdoors in the middle of winter? Have you taken leave of your mind? Elizabeth, this must be something you cooked up. My cousin does not have the imagination to contrive such a thing.”

Elizabeth tried her best to look innocent but could not prevent her eyes from twinkling in acknowledgement.

“We wanted you to feel at home, Cousin,” she replied.

“Do not tell me you arranged for the snow as well. Surely even the Master of Pemberley cannot control the elements,” said Robert Darcy. His eyes were drawn to the frozen lake and the lights slanting onto the ice. “If only I had some skates,” he added wistfully.

“Perhaps we can arrange for that,” said Elizabeth, holding up a pair of wood- mounted blades.

Robert gasped and threw his arms around Elizabeth. “Now I believe my cousin when he calls you an angel.”

“Don’t forget, Cousin Robert,” growled Darcy, “that she happens to be my angel. And your behaviour is entirely unseemly.”

Robert released Elizabeth and bowed to her. “My humble apologies, ma’am.”

Darcy in turn executed a stiff bow to Caroline. “You timed your entrance very well, Mrs Darcy. It appears you are the last of the guests.”

Caroline – formerly Miss Bingley – inclined her head imperiously. “Did I not promise I would play the part?”

“You did,” said Eliza, taking her by the arm and leading her to the seats that had been arranged under the canopy by the lakeside.

Hundreds of candles glittered everywhere one looked, and steam rose up from bowls, filling the air with the spicy scent of hot spiced ale, cider and mulled wine.

Fitzwilliam turned to his cousin. “Come, Robert. I will guide you to your seat.”

As he arrived to where everyone was assembled, a gong sounded. He waited for the excited chattering to die down to make his announcement.

“Ladies and gentleman,” he said. “I have arranged for instructors to teach us the fundamentals by and by. Meanwhile, I would like to present the first entertainment of the evening.” He gave a signal. “Let the party begin!”

At once a hired troop of skaters in exotic costumes appeared on the lake and began to slide elegantly across the ice to the music played by the orchestra. There were gasps and aahs from the audience.

Nothing like this had been seen in Derbyshire before.
