Reality Boy
by A.S. King
-YA
Amazon | Goodreads

Gerald Faust knows exactly when he started feeling angry: the day his mother invited a reality television crew into his five-year-old life. Twelve years later, he’s still haunted by his rage-filled youth—which the entire world got to watch from every imaginable angle—and his anger issues have resulted in violent outbursts, zero friends, and clueless adults dumping him in the special education room at school.

Nothing is ever going to change. No one cares that he’s tried to learn to control himself, and the girl he likes has no idea who he really is. Everyone’s just waiting for him to snap…and he’s starting to feel dangerously close to doing just that.

In this fearless portrayal of a boy on the edge, highly acclaimed Printz Honor author A.S. King explores the desperate reality of a former child “star” who finally breaks free of his anger by creating possibilities he never knew he deserved.

PiRat review: The Dust of 100 Dogs by A.S. King

Who be the PiRat?

Every Friday throughout May, The Book Rat will be forcibly taken over by the PiRat, most dread rodent to appear on the high seas since Reepicheep.

Capt. PiRat will be sharing with us his take on some swashbuckling tales - because what's a rat to do in all that downtime when he's not marauding?

Read, of course...

(and drink rum. but that's a given.)

And now the first tale from the Capt. PiRat...

Review snippet of: The Dust of 100 Dogs by A.S. King

There are a lot of things I could say about the writing and the structure of the book, and the alternating viewpoints, and the interestingness of it all, but what I really want to talk about is this: I'm kind of amazed at how dark this book is.

Read the complete review.

Capt. PiRat Says:
Here be the story I was waitin' for. Emer is a pirate, sure enough; Jilly could learn sommat from her. Now where to get some o' that dust o' 100 dogs - I know a bitch or two could benefit from that...

The Dust of 100 Dogs by A.S. King

The Dust of 100 Dogs
by A.S. King
Genre: Historical, Pirates, Reincarnation, Romance
Published: 2009
Paperback: 330 pages
Rating: 5

Inspiration: I chose this book for the pirates theme and Debut Authors 2009 Challenge.

Description from the book:
Cursed to live the lives of 100 dogs, a seventeenth-century pirate finally returns to life as a human being and has only one thing on her mind--to recover the treasure she had buried in Jamaica three hundred years before.

My thoughts:
In-a-word: Arg!
This is an amazing story that was well crafted and well told. There were references to dogs, pirates, reincarnation, romance, and historical times woven into the tale that takes place in Ireland, the Caribbean and the U.S. I enjoyed the pirate scenes the most. Loved to see a swashbuckling female pirate hold her own!

Interesting tidbits:
Read about the cover art and check out A.S. King's red boots at readergirlz.
