Thirsty Thursday and Hungry Hearts - 6.2.16

Thirsty Thursday and Hungry Hearts
hosted by (un)Conventional Bookviews (details)

A meme to share some food and/or drink quotes found in current reads.

Don't You Cry
by Mary Kubica
-Mystery, Thriller
Amazon | Goodreads

In downtown Chicago, a young woman named Esther Vaughan disappears from her apartment without a trace. A haunting letter addressed to My Dearest is found among her possessions, leaving her friend and roommate Quinn Collins to wonder where Esther is and whether or not she's the person Quinn thought she knew.

Meanwhile, in a small Michigan harbor town an hour outside Chicago, a mysterious woman appears in the quiet coffee shop where eighteen-year-old Alex Gallo works as a dishwasher. He is immediately drawn to her charm and beauty, but what starts as an innocent crush quickly spirals into something far more dark and sinister than he ever expected.

As Quinn searches for answers about Esther, and Alex is drawn further under the stranger's spell, master of suspense Mary Kubica takes readers on a taut and twisted thrill ride that builds to a stunning conclusion and shows that no matter how fast and far we run, the past always catches up with us in the end.

QUOTE:
The sun is up, and all along Farragut Avenue people scuttle to and from the coffee and bagel shops for breakfast, or lunch, or whatever it is that people eat and drink at 10:00 a.m.
-chapter Quinn, page 14

=====> Everything bagel with cream cheese are my go to for bagel flavor. A coffee or mocha is also a must pairing.

London has been destroyed in a blitz of bombs and disease. The only ones who have survived are children, among them Gwen Darling and her siblings, Joanna and Mikey. They spend their nights scavenging and their days avoiding the ruthless Marauders -- the German Army led by Captain Hanz Otto Oswald Kretschmer.

Unsure if the virus has spread past England's borders but desperate to leave, Captain Hook hunts for a cure, which he thinks can be found in one of the survivors. He and his Marauders stalk the streets snatching children for experimentation. None ever return. Until the day they grab Joanna. As Gwen sets out to save her, she meets a mysterious boy named Pete. Pete offers the assistance of his gang of Lost Boys and the fierce sharpshooter Bella, who have all been living in a city hidden underground. But in a place where help has a steep price and every promise is bound by blood, it will cost Gwen. And are she, Pete, the Lost Boys, and Bella enough to outsmart Captain Hook?

Just released: July 28, 2015
Publisher: MIRA
Genre: Mystery, Thriller
Hardback: 384 pages
Rating: 5

First sentence(s):
The first time I see her, she is standing at the Fullerton Station, on the train platform, clutching an infant in her arms.

Zombie sighting:
Pitch blackness spotted with the occasional streetlight that may or may not work. The time of day when zombies come out to play, loitering in the city's parks, in the darkened alcoves of closed businesses that line Clark and Fullerton Streets.
-chapter Heidi, page 146

She sees the teenage girl on the train platform, standing in the pouring rain, clutching an infant in her arms. She boards a train and is whisked away. But she can't get the girl out of her head…

Heidi Wood has always been a charitable woman: she works for a nonprofit, takes in stray cats. Still, her husband and daughter are horrified when Heidi returns home one day with a young woman named Willow and her four-month-old baby in tow. Disheveled and apparently homeless, this girl could be a criminal—or worse. But despite her family's objections, Heidi invites Willow and the baby to take refuge in their home.

Heidi spends the next few days helping Willow get back on her feet, but as clues into Willow's past begin to surface, Heidi is forced to decide how far she's willing to go to help a stranger. What starts as an act of kindness quickly spirals into a story far more twisted than anyone could have anticipated.

PeekAbook:

My two-bits:

From the start I felt leery and unsettled with all the characters which makes this a thriller that keeps you on your toes. Once I started to empathize with one, they would do something that changed my mind.

The story had a great way of spiraling down into dark territory and then twisting and turning into something else. Loved that.

Although food was not a focus, it was described and had presence enough to make me want to eat a chicken pot pie ;-)

About the author:
Mary Kubica is the bestselling author of THE GOOD GIRL (2014) and PRETTY BABY (2015). She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, in History and American Literature.

Mary lives outside of Chicago with her husband and two children and enjoys photography, gardening and caring for the animals at a local shelter.
