Rebel of the Sands
(Rebel of the Sands #1)
by Alwyn Hamilton
-Fantasy, YA
Amazon | Goodreads

Mortals rule the desert nation of Miraji, but mythical beasts still roam the wild and remote areas, and rumor has it that somewhere, djinn still perform their magic. For humans, it’s an unforgiving place, especially if you’re poor, orphaned, or female.

Amani Al’Hiza is all three. She’s a gifted gunslinger with perfect aim, but she can’t shoot her way out of Dustwalk, the back-country town where she’s destined to wind up wed or dead.

Then she meets Jin, a rakish foreigner, in a shooting contest, and sees him as the perfect escape route. But though she’s spent years dreaming of leaving Dustwalk, she never imagined she’d gallop away on mythical horse—or that it would take a foreign fugitive to show her the heart of the desert she thought she knew.

Rebel of the Sands reveals what happens when a dream deferred explodes—in the fires of rebellion, of romantic passion, and the all-consuming inferno of a girl finally, at long last, embracing her power.

AND binge watching: on Netflix

Bob's Burgers
tv series, season one
Creators: Loren Bouchard, Jim Dauterive
Starring: H. Jon Benjamin, John Roberts, Dan Mintz, Eugene Mirman, Kristen Schaal
-Animation, Humor | imdb | my rating: 5

Bob Belcher, along with his wife and three children, try to run their last hope of holding the family together, which is running Bob's dream restaurant.

=====> Watching it for the odd humor and chuckles derived.

AND binge watching: on YouTube

IISuperwomanII
vlogger
Starring: Lilly Singh
-Humor | YouTube channel

Hi! My name is Lilly and I make funny videos every Monday and Thursday. I rant, create sketches and sometimes even dress up as my parents! Most importantly, I smile a lot and want to make you feel happy.

=====> Loving her sense of humor! Came across this Canadian comedian after seeing an ad about her in Entertainment Weekly.

AND watched: in theatre

Knight of Cups (2015)
Director/Writer: Terrence Malick
Starring: Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman
-Drama, Romance | imdb | my rating: 3 but turned into 5!

A writer indulging in all that Los Angeles and Las Vegas has to offer undertakes a search for love and self via a series of adventures with six different women.

=====> At first I did not take to this. First, note that I went into this without knowing premise. Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett and Natalie Portman were the main draws for me.

The film was artsy with metaphors to figure out and lots of voiceovers (which I haven't been keen on lately). BUT, I was forced to seriously think about it when a someone sitting next to me in the theatre started a conversation with me about it. Spent a delightful dinner with the person dissecting the film and came to appreciate and really like the film.

Got me interested in learning about tarot cards and interpretations.

The Wave (2015)
original title: Bølgen
Director: Roar Uthaug
Writers: John Kåre Raake, Harald Rosenløw-Eeg
Starring: Kristoffer Joner, Thomas Bo Larsen, Ane Dahl Torp
-Action, Drama, Thriller, Norway | imdb | my rating: 5

Even though awaited, no-one is really ready when the mountain pass of Åkneset above the scenic narrow Norwegian fjord Geiranger falls out and creates a 85-meter-high violent tsunami. A geologist is one of those caught in the middle of it.

=====> Went to see this for the cinematography as Norway is one of those place I want to visit some day. Loved it. The story was just as gripping.

AND watched: on DVD

Me, Earl and the Dying Girl (2015)
Director: Alfonso Gomez-Rejon
Screenplay: Jesse Andrews
Based on book by: Jesse Andrews
Starring: Thomas Mann, RJ Cyler, Olivia Cooke
-Comedy, Drama | imdb | my rating: 5

High schooler Greg, who spends most of his time making parodies of classic movies with his co-worker Earl, finds his outlook forever altered after befriending a classmate who has just been diagnosed with cancer.

=====> So glad I watched this. I thought it might be too sad which is why I had not seen it sooner. Yes, there were sad parts as cancer is a sad topic. However, overall the story is true and touching with its portrayal of friendships and character growth.

Loved the mini-films and animation presented.

The Merman and The Moon Forgotten... Launches Into Space!

Nikolas and Company:
The Merman and the Moon Forgotton
by Kevin McGill

On March 31st Aero Studios is going to launch Nikolas and Co: The Merman and The Moon Forgotten...into space. Details in the video:

The Merman and The Moon Forgotten (Nikolas and Co #1) is about a ragtag group of teenagers that travel from earth to a mythological reimagination of our moon. It’s called Nikolas and Company: The Merman and The Moon Forgotten. So, sending my book up in a high altitude balloon into outer space seemed like the most logical conclusion…ok. For full disclosure, actually, I’ve always wanted to ride a weather balloon into space. But if the balloon popped, then I probably wouldn’t survive the descent, no matter how much bubble wrap I tied myself into. So, I’ve opted to send my book instead. We will film and share it with you guys next week!

If you’re around the metroplex and want to come out for launch day, then email me for details: kevinonpaper@gmail.com

Space-Book Contest

Note from author:

THE HIGH ALTITUDE BALLOON CARRYING MY BOOK WILL GO UP, BUT IT ALSO MUST COME BACK DOWN. BUT HOW FAR AWAY WILL IT LAND? 20 MILES FROM THE LAUNCH SITE? 30? 60?

CLICK HERE AND GIVE YOUR BEST GUESS. THE WINNER WILL GET A $50 GIFT CARD TO AMAZON OR BEST BUY AND A FREE COPY OF NIKOLAS AND CO.

SOME say Alice has taken a barrel over Niagara falls.

Others say she floated down the deep cavern filled a flock of carnivorous cuckoo birds.

But we all know our dear Alice took a one way ticket to the moon. Not the moon as it is, but the moon as it was. Full, fantastic, and abundant with magical life. In fact, we have a video to prove it:

Watch the Nikolas and Company book trailer below:

Now, answer the question:

Alice woke up and mysteriously found herself aboard the Mottled Craw in the video. What did she say?

Leave your response on the comment section below.

Let it be funny.

Let it be whimsical.

Let it be poignant.

Whatever it is, let it be posted!

The comment that strikes my fancy will receive a free ebook copy of Nikolas and Company: The Merman and The Moon Forgotten.

Also, be sure to check out episode 1 of the Nikolas and Company series:

Nikolas and Company – The Merman and The Moon Forgotten http://nikolasandco.com

Synopsis:
Nick lives in a time when one can zip from country to country in mach-speed hovercars, extend their life indefinitely through cerebral downloads, and have every whim taken care of by their ever faithful nannydrone.

Nick hates it.

Aside from the refugee camps, overpopulation, and unchecked consumerism filling every city across the globe, Nick just doesn’t belong. That is when he hears the voice of a woman:

“The Rones lie about their true intent. They enter the city of Huron at the peril of us all.”

Shortly after, his slightly crazed grandfather reveals to him:

“All you’ve ever heard about the Moon is a lie, my dear Nikolas. He was not always a mere satellite, a ghost wandering the stars. In an age before our own, Moon was our twin, and in him bore the whole of magical life. The cradle of this magical civilization was a fantastic metropolis filled with fire-breathing winged lions, volcano-born nymphs, automaton-legged mermaids, and so much magic you can smell it. We called this city Huron, and you, Nikolas, are her steward.”

Meanwhile on the moon, the senior stagecoach driver Yeri Willrow thought he was performing a simple drive and drop for his mysterious passengers, until they are attacked by foul-breath red-eyed creatures. He soon learns that his passengers are a family of automaton-legged merfolk, and he is their only hope. Yeri suddenly finds himself tasked with saving the merfolk or they will fall to the peril of the creature most foul.

Nikolas and Company:
A Creature Most Foul
by Kevin McGill
illustrated by C Carlyle McCullough

“The Rones lie about their true intent. They enter the city of Huron at the peril of us all. Save me steward.” – The Voice of Huron Nick hears a woman’s cry for help. He soon discovers that every city has a voice, and this one calls him steward.

Nick and company are transported from sometime in the near future to a mythic past when Earth is tethered to the fantastic world of Mon, or as we have come to call her, the Moon. He arrives at the city of Huron, where he encounters fire-breathing winged lions, volcano-born nymphs, automaton-legged mermaids, and so much magic you can smell it.

As steward of Huron, Nick Lyons suddenly finds himself responsible over the cradle of all magical civilization. There’s only one problem. Nick Lyons. When Nick gets involved, things tend to go awry—burning down the neighbor’s greenhouse kind of awry. And so no one believes him when he claims that the Rones brought an evil to Huron, which now lurks under the cobblestone streets.

To make matters worse, while aboard the Mottle Craw his best friend, Xanthus is infected by a mysterious creature. Pretty soon, Nick realizes that Xanthus' mysterious creature and the evil lurking through the streets of Huron are one and the same. Never one for responsibility, Nick is tasked with finding a cure for an infected Xanthus while protecting the city of Huron from the mysterious creature most foul.
