HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR
Year of the Tiger
~*~
Beasts of A Little Land
by Juhea Kim
Historical, Korea | Published: 2022 | Goodreads

An epic story of love, war, and redemption set against the backdrop of the Korean independence movement, following the intertwined fates of a young girl sold to a courtesan school and the penniless son of a hunter.

In 1917, deep in the snowy mountains of occupied Korea, an impoverished local hunter on the brink of starvation saves a young Japanese officer from an attacking tiger. In an instant, their fates are connected—and from this encounter unfolds a saga that spans half a century.

In the aftermath, a young girl named Jade is sold by her family to Miss Silver’s courtesan school, an act of desperation that will cement her place in the lowest social status. When she befriends an orphan boy named JungHo, who scrapes together a living begging on the streets of Seoul, they form a deep friendship. As they come of age, JungHo is swept up in the revolutionary fight for independence, and Jade becomes a sought-after performer with a new romantic prospect of noble birth. Soon Jade must decide whether she will risk everything for the one who would do the same for her.

From the perfumed chambers of a courtesan school in Pyongyang to the glamorous cafes of a modernizing Seoul and the boreal forests of Manchuria, where battles rage, Juhea Kim’s unforgettable characters forge their own destinies as they wager their nation’s. Immersive and elegant, Beasts of a Little Land unveils a world where friends become enemies, enemies become saviors, heroes are persecuted, and beasts take many shapes.

My two-bits:

Excellent balance of martial arts action and romance with a chinese historical backdrop.

Loved how the female lead possessed a strong will and courage to forge her own way.

Habit of a Foreign Sky
by Xu Xi

Published: October 2010
Genre: Chinese, Coming of Age
Paperback: 288 pages
Rating: 5

Description from the amazon:
Somewhere between Hong Kong and New York, life does an abrupt shift for Gail Szeto, when her mother, her last family member, is killed in an accident.

For Gail, a mixed-race, single mother who had buried her young son less than two years prior, all she has left is a hard-won career at a global investment bank.

Life rapidly goes into free fall for this woman with a complicated past, who was once so sure of her direction in life, who can now see no clear future path.

Shortlisted for the inaugural Man Asian Literary Prize, this novel offers a an international cast of characters in New York, Hong Kong and Shanghai.

Quotes to note:
Entering her mother's room, she confronted the hoarding of a life.
- page 61, chapter 5

But families were complicated these days, neither happy nor unhappy, and as unpredictable and mercurial as human resources.
- page 251, chapter 26

My two-bits:
In-a-word(s): Fa-Loong
I call this a coming-of-age story although it is not YA. It is more like a coming-of-age during a later stage in life in which the protagonist undergoes major growth.

This tale kept me interested and curious to the very end.
