AND watched: on Netflix

Beauty and the Beast (2017)
Director: Bill Condon
Screenplay: Stephen Chbosky, Evan Spiliotopoulos
Based on animated film screenplay by: Linda Woolverton
Stars: Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans
-Family, Fantasy, Musical | imdb | my rating: 5
Oscar 2018 nominee

An adaptation of the fairy tale about a monstrous-looking prince and a young woman who fall in love.

SURPRISINGLY better than expected. I had heard good things about this when it first came out but avoided it because I enjoyed the animated version and was fine with that. But, I ended up watching this as it is nominated for a few categories for this year's Oscar's. It lives up to the hype and now is another Disney favorite for me.

AND watched: in theatre

I, Tonya (2017)
Director: Craig Gillespie
Writer: Steven Rogers
Stars: Margot Robbie, Sebastian Stan, Allison Janney
-Biography, Comedy, Drama | imdb | my rating: 5
Oscar 2018 nominee

Competitive ice skater Tonya Harding rises amongst the ranks at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, but her future in the activity is thrown into doubt when her ex-husband intervenes.

WELL done in the telling of this tale with side notes by the characters stated directly to the camera. Behind the scenes coverage is always a treat to watch. Hilarious bumbling moments.

The Florida Project (2017)
Director/Writer: Sean Baker
Writer: Chris Bergoch
Stars: Brooklynn Prince, Bria Vinaite, Willem Dafoe
-Drama | imdb | my rating: 5
Oscar 2018 nominee

Set over one summer, the film follows precocious six-year-old Moonee as she courts mischief and adventure with her ragtag playmates and bonds with her rebellious but caring mother, all while living in the shadows of Walt Disney World.

LOVE this director's style of storytelling of life of the have nots.

The Insult (2017)
L'insulte (original title)
Director/Writer: Ziad Doueiri
Writer: Joelle Touma
Stars: Adel Karam, Kamel El Basha, Camille Salameh
-Drama, Beirut | imdb | my rating: 5
Oscar 2018 nominee

In today's Beirut, an insult blown out of proportions finds Toni, a Lebanese Christian, and Yasser, a Palestinian refugee, in court. From secret wounds to traumatic revelations, the media circus surrounding the case puts Lebanon through a social explosion, forcing Toni and Yasser to reconsider their lives and prejudices.

THE analysis of an insult unfolds that creates a story that at first is cut and dried but then starts to blur.

Bugs (2016)
Director: Andreas Johnsen
Stars: Josh Evans, Roberto Flore, Ben Reade
-Documentary | imdb | my rating: 4

In an effort to determine their sustainability as a food source, two chefs travel throughout the world tasting insects.

WENT to a special screening of this film that included bug filled snacks to taste. Various countries were visited for bug tasting and acquisition for research. Bugs as a food source is an accepted thing in other countries. But not yet so much in the US.

Molly's Game (2017)
Director/Screenplay: Aaron Sorkin
Based on book by: Molly Bloom
Starring: Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba, Kevin Costner
-Biography, Crime, Drama | imdb | my rating: 5
Oscar 2018 nominee

The true story of Molly Bloom, an Olympic-class skier who ran the world's most exclusive high-stakes poker game and became an FBI target.

WHAT a woman. I plan to read her book for more.

AND watched: online

Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool (2017)
Director: Paul McGuigan
Writer: Matt Greenhalgh
Based on book by: Peter Turner
Stars: Jamie Bell, Annette Bening
-Biography, Drama, Romance | imdb | my rating: 4

A romance sparks between a young actor (Peter Turner) and a Hollywood leading lady (Gloria Grahame).

LOVELY and sad story based on a memoir.

AND watched: on DVD

Westworld (2016)
tv series on HBO: season 1
Creators: Lisa Joy, Jonathan Nolan
Based on film by: Michael Crichton
Starring: Evan Rachel Wood, Jeffrey Wright, Ed Harris
-Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi | imdb | my rating: 5

A Western-themed futuristic theme park, populated with artificial intelligence, allows high-paying guests to live out their fantasies with no consequences or retaliation from the android hosts, until now.

WOW. This did a great job in the development of the original idea from the movie version.
