First sentence(s):
Joshua Poldark died in March 1783. In February of that year, feeling that his tenure was becoming short, he sent for this brother from Trenwith.

In the first novel in Winston Graham’s hit series, a weary Ross Poldark returns to England from war, looking forward to a joyful homecoming with his beloved Elizabeth. But instead he discovers his father has died, his home is overrun by livestock and drunken servants, and Elizabeth—believing Ross to be dead—is now engaged to his cousin. Ross has no choice but to start his life anew.

Thus begins the Poldark series, a heartwarming, gripping saga set in the windswept landscape of Cornwall. With an unforgettable cast of characters that spans loves, lives, and generations, this extraordinary masterwork from Winston Graham is a story you will never forget.

My two-bits:

I found it just as exciting to read the book as watching the tv series.

The story has a classic historic period piece vibe which got me in the mood for some cozy reading.

From the beginning this tale draws you into its world and drama of the Poldark family and the people who revolve around them. The family and land history are rich with details to better immerse into this series.

Each character is colorful and fleshed out well enough to pick out the baddies from the favorites.

I enjoyed just being in the culture of the times which dictated the interactions and drama.

About the author:
Winston Graham is the author of forty novels. His books have been widely translated and the Poldark series has been developed into two television series, shown in 22 countries. Six of Winston Graham's books have been filmed for the big screen, the most notable being Marnie, directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
