Vampire Diaries s1.1

Vampire Diaries Season 1,
Episode 1
Pilot
Thursday nights on CW

-my weekly segment for Vampire Diaries Challenge and Helluva Halloween

Synopsis from TV Guide:
In the series opener, Virginia high-schooler Elena (Nina Dobrev) falls for a new student (Paul Wesley), who is actually a centuries-old vampire struggling to live peacefully among humans. Their budding relationship is threatened when his evil vampire brother arrives in town and tries to capture Elena's heart for himself.

My thoughts
:
I have just begun reading this book series by L. J. Smith, so am new to the storyline. From the tv show it's looking kinda like a love triangle with a twist. The twist being that vampires are involved.

The show starts with the main character Elena writing in her diary which reminded me strongly of Liz writing in her journal in the pilot of the Roswell tv series (a past show I loved). The interesting thing with diaries is that Elena's budding love interest, Stefan - vampire dude, also keeps a diary - diaries. Hence, the title connection?

I like the musical selection for the show. It's hip and happening creating the right vibe for the show. If I continue to watch the show, I probably be turned on to some new bands.

The appearance of the mist, the crow, and Damon - another vampire dude surprised me. Being an Ian Somerhalder fan from his days in Young Americans and Lost, I did not like him as a baddie. He played his part well being the evil brother - only too well. I'm hoping he comes around to the "good side" (keeping fingers crossed).

Looking forward to what next week brings.

Extra tidbit:

Ian Somerhalder Interview ( full article )

Excerpt:

Somerhalder plays Damon Salvatore, a 170-year-old vampire who follows his brother, Stefan (Paul Wesley), to Mystic Falls, their small Pacific Northwest hometown. Stefan is there to woo Elena (Nina Dobrev), a young woman who resembles his late wife; Damon is mostly just there to torture Stefan. “Damon’s just lonely, bored and pissed off,” the actor says. Why is Damon so angry? The premiere episode indicates that there is bad blood (heh) between the brothers for some unmentioned past transgression; specifically, Damon promises Stefan “an eternity of misery.” “For someone to say that to another person, they must have done something really horrible, something to warrant that kind of promise,” he says. “Those things are fun to find out,” he teases.

Are you watching this show? and what did you think?

  1. Thanks for the Ian Somerhalder interview. I've been a fan of his since his Lost days. I'm waiting for books 1 and 2 to come in at the library-I haven't had enough time to watch the show yet, but have it taped.

  2. This is sitting on my DVR waiting for tomorrow evening. It sounds kinda similar in plot to Shattered Mirror by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. I love her vampire books. I also love the music that shows use now, and especially that they tell you what it was at the end. Very considerate. And all the new ways to pick up new tunage; Guitar Hero, TV shows, even books. That last one may be old, but I've noticed a growing trend in book soundtracks. Book soundtracks are great!
    P.S. Did you see Glee last night? It was sooo funny! :}

I just started the books today. The good husband brought me home books!

  4. Thanks for the review. I forgot to TiVo the pilot. *cries* Sounds like it was good, so I need to see if Hulu has it or something. *sniff*

  5. I know nothing about the book(s)? the series is based on, or the series itself, but the geographical location caught my eye. Small, Pacific Northwest town? Are ALL vampires running around in my backyard these days??? :-) 'Cause if they are, I want to know. And, like, stock up on stakes and things. Ha!

  6. I had to watch this online because I'm deprived of it all the way in my crazy-future-time zone country. I liked it! I think the pilot kicked off well and I'm going to tune in again next week to see how it continues to pan out. Might even encourage me to read the second book in the series. I like the music too - I heard The Fray at the end! (I'm a fan!)

I thought Stefan was quite nice looking... heh.

  7. I LOVED Roswell as well! Oh goodness, I feel silly for not making that diary connection while watching VD. I wrote my thoughts on the pilot as well but basically my interest was piqued by the bad blood between Stefan and Damon, and the ending shot of Damon looking over at Caroline. I will continue to watch it, but I too am coming into this show without reading the books...yet. I also found Stefan nice looking :)
